* From Tom Carrubba KA2D, Section Emergency Coordinator

New York City District - DEC Mike Lisenco N2YBB:
November starts the winter lull.
Many members participated in the New York City Marathon.
On Thanksgiving Day, Brooklyn ARES participated in the
annual Turkey Trot sponsored by the Prospect Park track Club
and the New York Roadrunners Club.
An EC meeting was held in the beginning of the month, and
plans to develop lessons on various topics were made.  A
follow-up meeting is planned for January 2005.
On a personal note, I want to thank all those responsible
for my being awarded the "Amateur of the Year" Award that I
received from the Hudson Division of the ARRL on Saturday,
November 13th.  I am very humbled to have been considered
for the award and very proud to have received it.

John Healy, KA2ABV, EC Manhattan:
We are pleased to announce that Manhattan ARES and the
Broadcast Employees Amateur Radio Society, W2ABC, have
re-established their long standing working relationship. The
trustees of the BEARS repeater system have generously
permitted Manhattan ARES to designate their two meter
repeater (147.27 +600Khz, PL 141.3) as the main Manhattan
Tactical Frequency as well as an NYC-ARES Citywide
Frequency. We are holding our weekly Manhattan ARES Net on
the BEARS repeater each Tuesday evening beginning at 7:30
PM. All are invited to check in. During the New Year,
Manhattan ARES will be assisting BEARS with its VE sessions
at the ABC corporate campus on Manhattan's upper West Side.
Further details will be posted on both the BEARS website
http://www.w2abc.org/, the NYC-ARES website
http://www.aresnyc.org/, and in QST.
Next New York County ARES meeting - 12/16/04 at 6:30pm
Meeting location: American Red Cross of Greater New York,
150 Amsterdam Avenue.

Joe Nieves N2TEE; EC Richmond County:
Over at St. Vincent's Hospital this past Wednesday, nine of
our eleven students passed their Technician exam.  With two
more official classes to go, we may be able to rein in those
last two potential hams.  I hope to welcome these hard
working folks into our ham fraternity and instill a sense of
public service at next week's class.  After a concerted
training effort by Ron WA2RF and Jan W2KMA, I applaud them
on this successful endeavor which brings new ideas and
renewed interest to our hobby.

Charles Gallo KC2V; EC Queens County

Adam Fine AB2IZ, EC Kings County

* NYC District ARES Participates in Toy Drive for Children
New York City District ARES has concluded it's month long
participation in Operation White Dove, the ARRL/United Way
toy drive designed to bring some holiday cheer to the many
youngsters who suffered due to the three horrendous hurricanes
to hit the state of Florida this past summer.
Santa, his reindeer and sleigh, disguised as a FedEx delivery truck,
has picked up the toys and will deliver them to Florida. He has
guaranteed delivery by Christmas. New York City ARES District
Emergency Coordinator Mike Lisenco, N2YBB, explains that the
call went out to the membership of the five boroughs that make up
the City to "open their hearts and do the right thing" in donating toys
for these children.  "When New York City needed help just 3 short
years ago, we received offers of assistance from all parts of the country.
This is just one way we can say thank you. To be able to
reciprocate and help someone else in their time of need. Paying it
forward, if you will."  Collections were made and coordinated
through the efforts of Joe Prego, N2ECR, New York City District
ARES Public Information Officer. Each borough Emergency
Coordinator was responsible for the efforts in their county.
Ray Lukacs, W2DEA, collected the toys from around town and
brought them back to Brooklyn where they were boxed at the
December monthly meeting of the Brooklyn ARES group under
the watchful eyes of Adam Fine, AB2IZ, Brooklyn Emergency
Coordinator. A special thank you has to go out to Bill Davis,
KC8CQT and FedEx. Bill, who works as a member of the FedEx
Customer Advocate Team, went out of his way to arrange for FedEx
to pick up the cost of shipping the toys to Florida. His help, and the
generosity of the FedEx Corporation, is greatly appreciated.
Submitted by Joe Prego, N2ECR, pio@aresnyc.org

* Long Island Congressman Israel honored
On December 16, 2004, Congressman Steve Israel (D-NY) was
presented the Oustanding Public Service Award by the National
Antenna Consortium (NAC).  NAC Executive Director Gerald
Agliata presented the award to the Congressman at a ceremony
in the his Hauppauge office.  Representatives from three other
organizations from the Amateur Radio Community also were present.
On hand to represent the ARRL was George Tranos N2GA, Section
Manager for NY City / Long Island.  Diane Ortiz K2DO attended as
a respresentative and Immediate Past President of the Long Island
Mobile Amateur Radio Club.  Dick Ross K2MGA attended to
represent CQ Magazine.  The award, the first ever presented by NAC,
was awarded Congressman Israel for his "Introduction of, and
sustained advocacy for, Legislation to require reasonable regulation
of Amateur Radio Service antennas, and related equipment, by
Homeowner's Associations and/or restrictive covenants."

* Students on Long Island speak with the astronauts aboard the ISS
From the ARRL Letter: Teacher April Pokorny's fifth graders at
Westhampton Beach Elementary School on Long Island, New York,
had reason to be grateful the day before Thanksgiving. That's when
they got a chance to speak via Amateur Radio with International
Space Station Expedition 10 Commander Leroy Chiao, KE5BRW,
at NA1SS. Secondary school students in Quebec spoke with Chiao via
ham radio on November 30. Both contacts were arranged via the Amateur
Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) program. Pokorny said the
Long Island school's November 24 contact provided a connection between
classroom learning and real life. "What could possibly be more exciting
than talking to an astronaut while he is in space," she told a reporter for
TV Channel 12. In addition to TV coverage, one radio station and two
newspapers reported the event.  Among other things, Chiao told the
Westhampton Beach pupils that the food aboard the ISS was pretty good,
that the orbit of the ISS could be altered "a little bit," and that the 2003
shuttle Columbia tragedy, in which seven astronauts died, did not deter
his desire to go into space. "We're all professional astronauts, and this is
what we do, and we know what the risks are" he said.
Chiao said he enjoys looking out the window and taking pictures, and he
sometimes spends his spare time watching movies. "I also like floating
around a lot," he said. Chiao told another youngster that it would be
easier to pitch a fast ball on Earth than in zero gravity.
Members of the Peconic Amateur Radio Club (PARC) set up the W2AMC Earth
station and made other technical arrangements to enable the contact. PARC
also assisted in a 2002 ARISS contact with Quogue School, also on Long
Island. "Second time around was not as scary as the first time, but it was not
without the usual need for backup planning," PARC President Roberta Keis,
N2RBU, said. An auxiliary generator ended up running all the radio and
videoconferencing equipment after power at the school kept cutting out due
to damp, rainy conditions that day. PARC members also needed to make a
last-minute antenna controller repair. "The after-contact comments were all
positive," Keis said. "Words like 'amazing' and 'wow!' were mixed with tears
of emotion and a general feeling of floating on air."
