HAPPENINGS

* From Mike Lisenco N2YBB, Section Manager

I hope everyone is keeping warm during this rather cold month.

January has so far seen the tenth anniversary edition of Ham Radio University.  HRU 2009

was hampered somewhat by snow, but still over 250 interested people turned out for a

day of fun and learning.  The keynote speaker, Kay Cragie N3KN,  ARRL

First Vice President gave a speech in which she asked every ham to find one thing new

in the hobby that they have never tried and then to try it.  She explained that there is

so much to do within ham radio, that one should never find  themselves growing tired

of the hobby.

Nearly 30 forums were held that touched on many aspects of ham radio, with the

day ending in a VE session.

For those who have never experienced HRU, please make a point of attending next year.

--------------------------------

January 1st saw the implementation of the ARRL WAS Triple Play Award.   This award,

a new and exciting version of the Worked All States Award (WAS), requires that each

state be worked on three modes; Phone, CW and Digital Mode.  Confirmation must

be made ONLY on the Logbook of the World (LoTW).   It’s an exciting challenge.

To date I’ve gathered 105 contacts (out of 150 needed), and I’ve run across a number

of hams in the Section who are also chasing this award.  LoTW is an electronic qsl

service run through the ARRL.  For more information on LoTW go to www.arrl.org/lotw

--------------------------

I would like to attend club meetings throughout the Section, and will be starting with the

January 28th meeting of the Radio Central ARC in Suffolk County (yes, quite a schlep

from Brooklyn).  If you would like me to attend a future meeting of your club, please

drop me a line at n2ybb@arrl.org.

This newsletter is your newsletter.   Please keep the Section in the loop by sending

announcements of upcoming club meetings, hamfests, and any other items of interest to

the NLI community to me and I will be happy to put it in the newsletter.  Again, the

email address is n2ybb@arrl.org
