the other members in the section, please contact me before February 12.
HAPPENINGS
Ham Radio University 2002 - The ARRL NYC/LI Section
Convention was held on Sunday, January 20, 2002
at Babylon Town Hall Annex on Phelps Lane in North
Babylon.
The NLI Section convention was a great success. Despite
the weather, over 300 hams showed up for a day of
education and camaraderie.
I'd like to thank each of you who helped out to make this day so
special. The HRU committee headed by Phil Lewis N2MUN has
come up with a formula for a smooth operation. The forum
moderators each did a wonderful job making their particular forum
interesting and informative. The NLI clubs who participated each
displayed information about their club events and activities.
A reporter from Newsday was there interviewing people. If you took
the time to speak with her, thank you. We got some good publicity from this- see the
Newsday web article:
http://www.newsday.com/news/printedition/longisland/ny-liham212559332jan21.story
Note: You have to copy this URL and paste it into your browser.
An ARRL forum was held at 12 noon and was well attended.
Thanks to all the ARRL appointees who participated and
helped wave the ARRL flag to the public.
A special event station was run by John Nistico NY6DX using
callsign W2V and made over 200 contacts! Thanks and
congratulations to John. Please QSL W2V via N2MUN.
Pictures were sent from the event to the NLI website via
the Automatic Picture Relay Network (APRN). The pictures
may be viewed at http://hudson.arrl.org/nli
Thanks to John KB2SCS, Tom KA2D, Neil KC2KY,
Walter KA2RGI and Len W2FX for making this happen!
DXCC card checking was performed by Emil KD1F.
A full volunteer exam session was held at 3 pm, with
Tom KA2D as the Liaison. Congratulations to all of
those who obtained their licenses or upgraded at this
session and thanks to all the VE's who participated.
A special thanks to those who made the coffee, set up and
took down the chairs and tables, and staffed the front table
collecting money for the event.
Thanks to the Town of Babylon for providing the excellent
facility at Phelps Lane, for BACCA for letting us use one
of its rooms. Thanks to the Great South Bay Amateur
Radio Club for sponsoring the event and providing all of
the manpower to make it go.
Thanks to anyone else who helped out in any way.
I am extremely proud of the way people and organizations
from throughout the section pulled together again to make this
day a success! Each of you should feel good about this
convention. It is through efforts like this that Amateur Radio
will grow and prosper. Ham Radio University makes the future
look bright for hams.

updated
information. Students will be expected to obtain an Extra class study
guide (available from the ARRL, Radio Shack or any ham radio
publication supplier) and begin reading it. The course will
be designed as a one-day "crash" course in Extra class theory.
As such it is intended as a refresher and tune up for the test.
We will have enough instructors to make it interesting and
informative but we don't pretend to be able to teach you ALL
of the material in one day. We do promise you will learn
something from the course, increase your chances of passing
the Extra class test and wet your knowledge for more!
As usual, a full Volunteer Examination session will follow the
completion of the course at about 4 pm. Contact: George
Tranos N2GA at n2ga@limarc.org or 631-286-7562
