| February 2003 | ARRL NYC/LI February E-happenings Newsletter Written and Edited by George Tranos N2GA, ARRL Section Manager NYC/LI -- Welcome! This is the February edition of the NY City / Long Island "ehappenings" Section newsletter! This newsletter is here to serve the Amateur Radio community in our area. I welcome and encourage all submissions. Please help make this your newsletter! I especially encourage officers of the area's Amateur Radio clubs to submit their meeting announcements, guest speakers and special events. Please submit any information for the March issue prior to the end of February. Section News Section News is available ONLY on the world-wide-web. See the NLI site at: http://www.arrl.org/sections/?sect=NLI HAPPENINGS Ham Radio University 2003 a success! HRU 2003 was held on Sunday, January 19, 2003, at East Woods School, 31 Yellow Cote Road, Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York. This was a special day of education for Amateur Radio. Many ham radio clubs and organizations in the NY City / Long Island area set up tables with information about their group. 18 different technical forums were held on all aspects of Amateur Radio. The HRU planning committee worked hard to make this a fun day for all involved. A VE session was held at 3 PM, a special event station W2V was on the air from the site, plus there were other demonstrations of Amateur Radio. The HRU committee thanks all those who helped make this event a success! Special thanks to all the moderators, to LIMARC for sponsoring the event, and to Harris Stein and the East Woods School for providing the superb facility for the day. A wrap-up meeting will be held on Monday, February 10, at 7 PM at Babylon Town Hall, Sunrise Highway, North Lindenhurst. Enter in the back and go downstairs to the ARES/RACES room for the meeting. A discussion and review of the event will focus on how to make next year's event even better. For more information contact George Tranos N2GA at n2ga@arrl.org or see the NLI website at http://hudson.arrl.org/nli From Tom Carrubba KA2D, Section Emergency Coordinator: New York City: No report. Nassau County: ARES participated on Dec. 2 in an American Red Cross DAT meeting; on Dec 7, WA2WKV attended division meeting in Paramus N.J; on Dec 9, WA2WKV, WF2T, KC2BCH and several others attended the EMO meeting at the new EOC for Nassau County. Both ARES and RACES leadership and members were in attendance; on Dec 10, Nassau ARES had monthly Meeting,.John N2EB ran a session on how to run a traffic or emergency net. We had 16 attendees. Suffolk County: Annual renewals in progress. Online data base is active. SEC Tom KA2D: attended the EMO meeting at the new EOC in Nassau County. Both ARES and RACES leadership and members were in attendance. Amateur Radio had a good representation and hopefully this will unite the two separate groups into a working unit. Also at this meeting, the Section wide linked system received another supporter who has resources in the lower Hudson Valley. This is another missing link that should be an aid to successfully completing the project. Progress is slow, but positive. Renewals are in progress. Many local EC's are using online databases for renewals. I have completed ARRL CCE EC003. STM Charlie WA2YOW reports the following: "Due to personal and family commitments I have resigned as STM effective with the submission of this report, so this will probably be the last time I will be in direct contact with you. It has been a truly great experience working with Field Services and all the members of our very fine section staff. Thank you for all your help and advice over the years."
