HAPPENINGS

* HRU 2006 a success!
Ham Radio University 2006 was Sunday, January 8, 2006 in Bethpage.
Held at Briarcliffe College, the seventh annual HRU was a day of
education to share ideas, experiences, knowledge and fellowship
among Amateur Radio operators.

This year, the weather cooperated and provided warm enough
temperatures for over 400 people attend.  They came primarily to attend
some of the 25 different forums about all aspects of Amateur Radio.

Keynote Speaker Gordon West WB6NOA put on a great show while
talking about new happenings in Amateur Radio.  Over 20 different clubs
and groups set up in the "club" room and distributed information about
their group.  Special event station W2V was active passing out QSO's
and providing live Amateur Radio demonstrations (please QSL all W2V
contacts via N2MUN for a special event QSL card).  More than a
dozen people participated in our volunteer exam session, with many
walking away with a new license or upgrade.  Every attendee was provided
with a "goodie bag" containing brochures and handouts from manufacturers.
Door prizes were handed out to some of the lucky ones who's ticket got
pulled in our hourly drawings.

HRU 2006 is a cooperative effort.  Radio amateurs from many different
organizations came together to help put on this event, our seventh
annual Ham Radio University!

* From Tom Carrubba KA2D, Section Emergency Coordinator

New York City District - DEC Michael Lisenco N2YBB:
We finished off the year with Operation Santa Claus at JFK.
This event, the highlight of the public service schedule,
has been an annual event for NYC District ARES for a number
of years.  Operation Santa Claus, an annual event sponsored
by The Community Mayors of New York and New Jersey, provides
a spectacular holiday party for 5,000 special needs
children. A hangar at John F. Kennedy International Airport
is transformed into a winter wonderland and, with the
assistance of  hundreds of volunteers and many corporate and
government sponsors, the children are treated to a fantastic
box lunch, candy treats and a very special gift.
Santa taxis into the hangar on his private jet, where he
disembarks and greets the thousands of children to their delight.
New York City ARES is proud to be a part of this wonderful annual
program.  I want to thank the following members for their
participation: N2ECR (once again the interface with the event organizers),
AB2IZ, W2/8R1B, KC2NBE, WA2JNF, KA2KAB, W2KMA, WA2IAF,
KC2LSB, KB2JOE, WA2KDG,W2DEA, and K2ZIR.
Our plans for an in-house EC-001 training session are coming
to fruition. The class will start on January 4, 2006, run for 8 weeks,
and culminate in a test session.  We have 10 ARES members
already signed up for the class.  Best wishes to all for a happy and healthy
holiday.

John Healy, KA2ABV, EC New York County
Richard Grover - W2RAG, AEC New York County reporting
New York County ARES meeting
One meeting this month - December 1, 2005 - Held at the San
Remo - 13 Member participated
12/05 - New York City Red Cross
New York City Red Cross was the beneficiary of these events.
From time to time W2RAG physically visits the 150 Amsterdam
location to check the operating conditions of the Ham Gear at that
location.
New York County (Manhattan) ARES has a weekly net, every
Tuesday at 7:30 PM.  We meet on the W2ABC repeater at the
frequencies listed above.  It is an open net, round table
style for discussions pertaining to Manhattan ARES Group,
emergency communications, Ham Radio in general.  All radio
amateurs are welcome to participate.
Year end wrap-up
During 2005, Manhattan ARES revamped its administrative
organization, adding several new AEC's to its ranks. The
group worked with the American Red Cross Greater New York
Chapter to further develop and solidify rapport with this
key served agency, conducting tests and drills in the
ARC-GNY Emergency Operations Center and introducing newer
members of the ARC
management team to ARES skills and capabilities. Several
drills were conducted during the year to test the groups
ability to function under adverse conditions. Of particular
interest was the simplex drill, which provided training in
efficient traffic handling and allowed the group to
determine areas where additional coverage is needed in the
event repeaters were not available. The plan is to eventually map
out the entire island to determine coverage areas for
simplex use. The end of 2005 saw a new Manhattan ARES list
server created to store files, disseminate information and serve
as a forum to meet the needs of members.
Looking forward to 2006, Manhattan ARES is planning the
installation of a repeater system with emergency power atop
one of the taller buildings on the upper West Side. The
group holds regular meetings at the San Remo, 146 Central
Park West, on the third Thursday of alternating months,
starting with Thursday, January 19th.

Roster update in progress

Russ Logar, KC2LSB, EC Queens County
Queens County ARES meeting
The December Queens County ARES meeting was held on Sunday
the 11th at our normal meeting place at Elmhurst General
Hospital.  Eight members were present.  We discussed a
number of topics like; Meeting time, Day and venue,
Training, HRU participation, Agenda for January and general
preparedness, especially as cold weather and the transit
crisis approached.
12/07/2005 Operation Santa Clause
Four Queens County ARES members participated in this event .
KB2JOE, K2ZIR, WB2KDG and KC2LSB all manned the actual
event.  And as usual, WA2GUG helped us get organized and
take care of all of the administrative work. Thanks to all
that participated.
Year end wrap-up
Queens County ARES provided, on average, 5.4 operators per
event for each of the nine events we participated in.  These
events include public service events as well as the SET and
NYC Marathon.  Our work at these events has always been well
received and we look forward to being invited back to all of
them in 2006.  Eight monthly meetings were held in 2005 with
average attendance at 8.5 members per meeting.  The
remaining four meetings were deferred due to event
participation. Membership in Queens County ARES grew by at
least 5 members in 2005.  This is a trend that we
wish to continue to help us boost our per event turn-out.
Digital modes were a hot topic during 2005, with several
members of Queens an other NYC
District members helping to set up packet and TelPac systems
in the area.  This is a theme that will continue to be
important to Queens ARES in 2006 and we look to partner with
other NYC District ARES members to define a system we can
all benefit from.In November of 2005, Charlie Gallo, KG2V,
stepped down from his position as EC of Queens County.  We
would like to thank Charlie for his years of leadership,
knowledge and support.  The
NYC DEC Mike, N2YBB, nominated Russ Logar, KC2LSB as the new
Queens EC.  Russ accepted the appointment in mid November.
Though Charlie has stepped down as EC, he was appointed an
AEC by Russ and continues to be an active and valued member
of the group. In addition to Charlie, KG2V, we also greatly
appreciate the continued diligence of Charlie, WA2GUG for
his administrative help as well as his continued efforts to
boost preparedness and assist in the development of the
packet network.  Similarly, the continued efforts of Joe,
KB2JOE, in managing the Queens ARES web site and help on the
packet network are also greatly appreciated.  During 2005,
Bill KC2GSK was appointed an AEC and OES.  In addition he
assumed the Queens weekly net NCS duties.  He is doing a
fine job and we look forward to his continued participation.
We would also like to thank all of the members of Queens
ARES for their participation, commitment and enthusiasm for
this service and the hobby.  We look forward to great things
in 2006 from all of you. Thanks!
HRU
Queens County ARES will be setting up a table at the 2006
Ham Radio University on January 8th. We will have examples
of GO-Kits, ARES brochures and fliers, an animated loop
slideshow of photos from past events and a number of members
to talk to perspective new members about what ARES does.
Applications will be on hand as well.  We look forward to
seeing you all there.
Membership
Queens County ARES has welcomed a new member this month.  He
is AB2UV (formerly KB2RXN) Rob.  We look forward to his
participation and help.
Meetings and Nets The Queens County Weekly nets are on
Thursday nights at 8:00 PM on the K2CJP repeater
(145.410MHz/-600KHz/114.8PL).  Thanks to our net control
station KC2GSK. Our first monthly meeting this year is on
January 15th, 2006. Meetings begin at 2:00PM at Elmhurst
Hospital.  For
information on meetings please visit the Queens ARES
website, www.queensares.org .     Thanks to Joe, KB2JOE for
his website management.

Gabriel Cuebas, N2PQT, EC Bronx
We have two new members N2OIH Miguel and N2YGW Noel
Looking forward to go to HRU It has been a good year for
Bronx County ARES we have a great group of members that are
willing to go when and where asked.  Even thought I have
been Only EC for 6 months, it has been great
working with the group.

Adam Fine AB2IZ, EC Kings County
12/07/05 - Operation 'Santa Claus'
Five members of Kings County ARES participated with members
from throughout the NYC District in this annual event.
Disabled schoolchildren are invited to a hanger at Kennedy
International Airport to see Santa Claus arrive via a jet,
this year a Boeing 767!!!  Those that participated included:
AB2IZ, KC2NBE, N2ECR, W2/8R1B, W2DEA and WA2JNF.
12/07/05 - Kings County ARES meeting
Although the weather was brutal, eight members of Kings
County ARES managed to make it to the final meeting of the
year in which all business was wrapped up.  Topics discussed
included:
Backup battery power; Event wrap up for 2005; Uniforms; Net
Protocols: Applications for 2006;ID cards.  Those in
attendance included: AB2IZ, KA2KDQ, KB2VDV, KC2JXM, KC2MGY,
N2BMU, N2RGA, & W2DEA.  Our next meetings are scheduled for
January 18th 2006 & February 15th, 2006.
Kings County ARES meetings are held at Methodist Hospital in
the Executive Dining Room - East Pavilion.  The hospital is
located on 6th Street, between 7th and 8th Avenues and is
accessible via the "F' train (7th Avenue), B67, B69 and B75
buses.  All meetings will start at 7pm.   All
information regarding this new location and Kings County
ARES can be found at www.kingscountyares.org.   Thanks to
Mitch, N2RGA, for all the upkeep and for the newest upgrade
of the website.
Kings County ARES has a weekly net, every Sunday at 8PM.
Nets are held on the W2CMA repeater (446.675/-5MHz/114.8) in
order to discuss issues of relevance to the ARES community
at large and Kings County ARES specifically.  We welcome,
encourage and invite all amateur radio operators to
participate.  Thanks to Tony, KC2JXM, for managing this net.
Year end wrap-up
2005 has been a very trying year for Kings County ARES and
it is with a sigh of relief that 2006 has arrived.  We lost
our meeting spot early in the year and went eight months
without a formal meeting location.  although we had a few
meetings at diners, it can be difficult to conduct business
in that environment.  This, unfortunately, led to the loss
of some people whom were 'on the fringe' of participation.
This lead to another problem of getting the events staffed.
This situation was also exacerbated by my six-day work
schedule from June to November which rendered me unable to
attend/participate in any events.  The staffing problem led
us to drop some events we had worked in previous years.  One
of the bright spots to come out of this was Mitch, N2RGA,
newly appointed AEC, who was able to attend and staff all of
these events.  It is to him that I, and the County, owe a
debt of gratitude.
Even with all of these issues, it was still a good year for
Kings County ARES.  We still had 18 events in the borough
(down from 20 in 2004) and participated in 3 outside the
borough (down from 6 in 2004).  We also assisted in
providing communications for the NYC Marathon albeit fewer
people (2005-15 / 2004-21) and fewer hours (2005-95 /
2004-133).  However, there are three members of Kings County
ARES who are on the staff of the NYC Marathon Communications
Team and a few Mile Captains as well.
All told, Kings County ARES had 35 members in 2005 (down
from 44 in 2004) of which 31 down from 41 in 2004) provided
event/drill communications for a total of 791 hours (down
from 1425 hours in 2004).  Not too bad for a bad year.  I
guess you can say this year was a year of using the
resources that we had to the greatest efficiency.
Another positive thing that came out of 2005 was Tony,
KC2JXM, becoming net manager for our weekly Kings County
ARES net.  Our record keeping and training of net control
adds yet another valuable aspect to our communications
group.
What I do, I would not be able to, without the assistance of
my AEC's Tony, KC2JXM and Mitch, N2RGA.  It is only through
their hard work, valuable input, cooperation and dedication
to this organization, that we were able to make it through
2005.  Here's hoping for a better 2006!!!
Happy New Year!!!

Nassau County - Jim Mezey W2KFV, DEC Nassau County
Nassau ARES was activated in support of the Lynbrook "Fly
with the Owls" 4 Mile Run/Walk for the benefit of the
Lynbrook Community Coalition on Saturday, Dec 3, 2005. The
event was centered at the Lynbrook North Middle School 529
Merrick Rd, Lynbrook NY.  There were nine ARES operators
were in attendance. Thank you WF2T and KC2CHA for
spearheading this event.
The December ARES meeting was our "End of The Year" meeting
where by we went over our goals and, our accomplishments for
2005 and set our goals for 2006.  There was also a very nice
presentation made to our former DEC George Gluck, WA2WKV.
George was presented with a plaque thanking him for all that
he has done for Nassau ARES for more than twenty three years
as DEC. A very nice video "Thank You George Gluck" was
shown, showing many aspects of George and ARES over the
years. A copy was given to George as a memento. Thanks to
Mario, WF2T and Lorrie KC2CHA for putting that together.

Happy New Year

* From Jim Minor W2DSX, Section Traffic Manager

It was great to meet many of you at HRU 2006, and many
thanks to the organizers and speakers who made it possible.
As always, feel free to email me with any questions about NTS,
especially for training purposes in ARES/RACES programs.
I know there is renewed interest in packet and I'd be glad to assist,
whether it's leaving practice messages on the area BBS's or
on-air QSO, just drop me an email.  It was also a pleasure meeting
John N2NSA who has rendered a lot of assistance with packet and
is SYSOP of KC2COJ and KB2VLX.  John and John WB2CIK
(among many others) have aided enormously in providing NLI
with an outstanding packet network (Northeast Flexnet) which
we are fortunate to have.

A caveat:  This is NOT indicative of the total digital NTS activity within the Section, as I'm still not successful in capturing total activity.  We're fortunate to have several major players behind the Northeast Flexnet Packet Network here in NLI.   I've been running Pactor Liaison for NLI with Tom N2LTC, but as he recovers from recent operations (and we wish him well) the
Pactor activity has shifted to Nick N2QZ via WB2FTX for the time being.

I'm also looking for any reports of WinPack activity, or any other of the new modes...

* Other "stuff"

- Finding ham radio classes a mouse click away!
A new user-friendly feature on the ARRL Web site--the ARRL Amateur
Licensing Class Search Page--lets prospective hams search for a
licensing class in their area. It also allows ARRL-registered
instructors to list their classes on the Web.  Visitors can search for
classes by ZIP code, ARRL Section or state.
http://www.arrl.org/FandES/courses/
Registered ARRL instructors can list their classes by visiting the
Volunteer Instructor Support page and completing a simple form.
http://www.arrl.org/FandES/ead/instructor/
Listings will automatically drop from the list when the class is
completed. The new page also links beginners and those planning to
upgrade to various resources, including ARRL's Now You're Talking! study
manual and the ARRL Exam Session Search page.
http://www.arrl.org/arrlvec/examsearch.phtml
Newcomers may also want to visit the "Welcome to Amateur Radio" page on
the ARRL Web site.
http://www.arrl.org/hamradio.html   "We're very excited about this new
feature that makes it easier for prospective hams to find a class so
that they can earn their Amateur Radio license," said ARRL Affiliated
Club and Mentor Program Manager Norm Fusaro, W3IZ. "ARRL also continues to support all of the instructors who give so much time and energy to teaching classes for new hams and upgraders." To become a registered
ARRL Volunteer Instructor, contact Fusaro; 860-594-0230. [w3iz@arrl.org]

- ARES E-Letter debuts, sign up now!
The ARES E-Letter to debut (Aug 11, 2005) -- Licensed League
members with ARRL Field Organization appointments involving
emergency communication or public service will be the first
to receive the debut issue of The ARES E-Letter! The premier
edition of the monthly national newsletter is set for
release Wednesday, August 17, and will publish on the third
Wednesday of each month after that. Since 9/11, interest
within the Amateur Radio community in emergency
communication and public service has greatly increased. More
than ever, hams are volunteering to help meet the
communication needs of our nation, states and communities.
The ARES E-Letter is a response to this expanding awareness.
Anyone with an interest in emergency communication or public
service activities can sign up online to receive The ARES
E-Letter. Each issue will contain a wealth of after-action
reports, editorials, technical tips, news and
views--information you'd otherwise have to wait for in QST.
Timeliness, utility and inspiration are the goals of this
informative publication that's devoted entirely to Amateur
Radio emergency communication and public service. Editing
the first issue is former long-time ARRL Headquarters staff
member Rick Palm, K1CE, who oversaw activities involving
ARRL Section Managers, the ARRL Field Organization and the
Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES). We invite
subscribers to share a copy with club newsletter editors or
with friends who may not be ARRL members but still might be
interested in receiving it. Those receiving the premier
edition also may opt out of getting further copies if they
wish. [from ARRL 08/11/05]
