HAPPENINGS

* Ham Radio University 2006 planning begins
With Ham Radio University 2005 behind us, planning has begun
for HRU 2006.  This seventh annual event will be held on
Sunday, January 8, 2006, at Briarcliffe College, 1055 Stewart
Avenue, Bethpage, Long Island, NY 11714.  HRU 2005 will
be a hard act to follow, where a record turnout of over 450
attendees came through the door. HRU is a day of education to
share ideas, experiences, knowledge and fellowship among
Amateur Radio operators. HRU 2005 featured 25 different forums
covering all areas of ham radio, Amateur Radio demonstrations,
an area for clubs and organizations, a special event station (W2V)
and a VE session. HRU has always had a dynamic keynote speaker.
In 2005, the keynote speaker was Riley Hollingsworth K4ZDH,
the Special Counsel for Amateur Radio Enforcement for the FCC.
For 2006, Gordon West WB6NOA has agreed to be the keynote
speaker.  Plans are in the works for an even larger room for him
to speak in.  Practically the only complaint about HRU 2005 was
the lack of space to hear the keynote speaker.  The HRU committee
discussed this at its wrapup meeting on February 8th and agreed
that finding a larger space was imperative.  We discovered that the
library area at Briarcliffe College will be a better location for
the keynote speaker and can hold more people, so that's where it
will be in 2006! The date for the initial planning meeting for HRU
2006 is Tuesday, August 2, at 7 PM.  Please check the HRU
website at http://www.hudson.arrl.org/nli/hru2005.htm for more
information. It will be updated continually as more information
becomes available.  Submitted by George Tranos N2GA.

* From Tom Carrubba KA2D, Section Emergency Coordinator
New York City District - DEC Michael Lisenco N2YBB:
Happy New Year.  January was a quiet month.  Most members
are catching up with training.  We were briefly placed on standby
during the blizzard in the middle of January.  No activation was
required.

John Healy, KA2ABV, EC New York County
I wish to thank those Manhattan ARES Members, especially
those members of our Rapid Intervention Team, who
volunteered their time to be on standby for the American Red
Cross during the recent blizzard that hit NYC. When high
tides threatened to flood low-lying areas in several
boroughs, NYC-OEM advised the Red Cross that it may be
necessary to open shelters for residents possibly requiring
evacuation. Fortunately, although we received a significant
amount of snowfall, flooding did not occur and the EOC was
not activated.

We wish to thank the Broadcast Employees Amateur Radio
Society, W2ABC, (147.27 MHz) for placing their repeater into
Emergency Operation for us during the stand-by operation and
their generosity in permitting Manhattan ARES to designate
their two meter repeater as the main Manhattan Tactical
Frequency. We also thank the Apple Repeater Club, KK2T,
(444.050 MHz) for the use of their repeater as our backup
Tactical Frequency.

At our January meeting, we discussed plans for the upcoming
simplex drill on Sunday, February 6th, at 10 AM. We also
discussed planning, coordination, and resource allocation to
further develop Manhattan ARES' ability to rapidly deploy
and maintain a communications backbone in the event of a
complete failure of communications systems in our area.
We are holding our weekly Manhattan ARES Net on the BEARS
repeater each Tuesday evening beginning at 7:30 PM. All are
invited to check in. During the New Year,
Manhattan ARES will be assisting BEARS with its VE sessions
at the ABC corporate campus on Manhattan's upper West Side.
We are currently finalizing details for this program, and
further details will be posted on both the BEARS website
http://www.w2abc.org/, the NYC-ARES website
http://www.aresnyc.org/, and in QST.
Our entry-level amateur radio class taught by Brian Wruble
(W3BW) and John Healy (KA2ABV) is about half way through the
course material at this point. Classes are being held on
Wednesday evenings at the Collegiate Church on West End
Avenue between 77th and 78th Street in Manhattan. On
Wednesday, March 16th, we are planning a VE session at the
church so our students can sit for the FCC Examination. We
still need several Volunteer Examiners to administer the
test. If you are a VE and are available to assist in testing
our potential new amateur operators, please contact
KA2ABV@ARRL.NET .
Next New York County ARES meeting - Thursday, February 24th,
2005 at 6:30 pm.  Meeting location: San Remo, 146 Central Park West,
at 75th Street.

Adam Fine AB2IZ, EC Kings County
Kings County ARES meeting - 01/19/05
Topics:  Emergency power and distribution of batteries
donated to the group; Reissuing of ARES ID cards; Red Cross
ID cards; Simplex drill on February 6th, 2005;
Training via ARRL CCE courses, FEMA.gov and SEMO.
In attendance: AB2IZ, K2RDG, K2RMX, KA2KDQ, KC2FWD,
KC2HMS, KC2JXM, KC2LYT, KC2MGY, KC2NBE, KC2NGU,
N2ECR, N2RGA, N2YBB, W2DEA, and WA2JNF.
Also in attendance were two perspective amateurs; Tim and
Alex.  Thanks to Ralph, KC2NGU, for inviting them and
hopefully we'll hear them on the air soon.
Kings County ARES has a weekly net, every Sunday at 8PM.  We
meet on the W2CMA repeater (446.675/-5MHz/114.8) in order to
discuss issues of relevance to the ARES community at large
and Kings County ARES specifically.  We welcome, encourage
and invite all amateur radio operators to participate.
Kings County ARES can be found on the web.  Visit us at
www.kingscountyares.org. Thanks to Mitch (N2RGA) for all the
hard work he puts into the site.
The next meeting will be on Wednesday, February 16th, 2005
at 7:30pm.  The location is UCP 121 Lawrence Street, between
Ocean Parkway and Seton Place Brooklyn, NY.
Happy New Year to all!!!

Nassau County - Mario Maltese WF2T; EC Nassau County
(for George Gluck, DEC, WA2WKV).  Nassau ARES hosted a
table at HRU on January 9th.  ARES members responded to a fire
on Jackson St. in a Hempstead Apartment building on Thursday,
January 20, 2005.  A fire, which started in the furnace room,
caused the evacuation of 100 units.  ARES members supported
the American Red Cross in Nassau County at the Reception
Center that was set up down the block from the scene of the fire, at
Chapter Headquarters in Mineola, and later in the day at the Shelter,
which was established along with communications for the ERV that
continued to support the scene with hot meals and soup. Red Cross
acknowledged the contribution by ARES, given the Nextel cell
phones gave out quickly as the event went on all day.
On January 22, 2005, ARES members stood by for the Winter
Storm that hit our area.  Members could be heard checking into the
Skywarn net  that was established by Alex Smith, N2XOJ, and
monitored the main ARES repeater for possible activation.
A request was received from OEM when 'RACES' could not
respond to provide communications for the CERT Team shelter
that was set up in Bayville, for communications with the ARES op
at the 9th Fire Battalion.
