ARRL NYC/LI March E-happenings Newsletter Written and Edited by George Tranos N2GA, ARRL Section Manager NYC/LI -- Welcome! This is the March edition of the NY City / Long Island "ehappenings" Section newsletter! This newsletter is here to serve the Amateur Radio community in our area. I welcome and encourage all submissions. Please help make this your newsletter! I especially encourage officers of the area's Amateur Radio clubs to submit their meeting announcements, guest speakers and special events. Please submit any information for the April issue prior to the end of March. March 2006 is the 59th regular edition since this newsletter was inaugurated in March, 2001. Section News Section News is available ONLY on the world-wide-web. See the NLI site at: http://www.arrl.org/sections/?sect=NLI IN THIS ISSUE: * LIPA to test BPL on Long Island * From Tom Carrubba KA2D, Section Emergency Coordinator * From Jim Minor W2DSX, Section Traffic Manager * Great South Bay ARC renews as ARRL special service club * UPCOMING Club Events * Other "stuff" * NLI Section Website: http://hudson.arrl.org/nli HAPPENINGS * LIPA to test BPL on Long Island The following has been reprinted from the ARRL Hudson Division Beacon: LIPA to test high-speed Internet service On LONG ISLAND Warning Danger !!!!! BPL may be coming to a community near you. There is still time to write a letter? See http://www.newsday.com/business/ny-bzlipa0215,0,51795,print.story?coll=ny-top-headlines for the full article. On February 15, Newsday printed an article about LIPA's plans for a BPL test announcing that on Feb. 21 it will ask companies to bid on a broadband-over-power lines and wireless Internet "demonstration" project to 105 homes and businesses in the Hauppauge/Commack area later this year. LIPA plans to test the Broadband Power Line system, which will allow Internet access via electrical lines and outlets, as well as wirelessly, over the next two years. Companies in the Hauppauge Industrial area will be a focus of the test, LIPA said Tuesday. LIPA chairman Richard Kessel urged patience. He said LIPA doesn't want to proceed with a wider rollout until it has fully tested the technology and makes certain it can offer it without interruption to its power services, or tax-exempt status. Kessel also said the project, if rolled out profitably, has the potential to help offset soaring electric rates. ARRL Hudson Division Director Frank Fallon N2FF Comment: I hope this causes ARRL members to take action and write a letter to Kessel and LIPA Board members to warn them of the interference potential of some of the systems hams have run afoul of across the US. We will shortly begin a letter writing campaign in NLI. * From Tom Carrubba KA2D, Section Emergency Coordinator New York City District - DEC Michael Lisenco N2YBB: 2005 SET report, 2005 Annual EC report and roster update HRU Participant, Forum Presenter. Joe Nieves N2TEE; EC Richmond County: No Additional Comments Russ Logar, KC2LSB, EC Queens County Queens County ARES meeting The January Queens County ARES meeting was held on Sunday the 15th at our normal meeting place at Elmhurst General Hospital. The major topic was the USE of vhf/uhf packet. The focus was not on how to assemble a station but rather what to do with it once it is up and running. The topic generated some lively discussion that will no doubt continue if future meetings. 2006 HRU Twelve Queens County ARES members manned the ARES table at HRU. We had examples of GO-Kits, emergency power, and a video loop showing past events from the NY District. Thanks to all that participated. Sad News Unfortunately, Queens Ares lost one of its members in January. Ed,WA2EQH, passed on Thursday January 12. He will be missed. Bill, KC2GSK, AEC&OES, also suffered the loss of his father this month. We wish Bill and his family well. New Member This month we officially welcomed Annita, KC2OYY to the Queens roster. Annita, along with her husband Ryan, AB2MH, form the first couple on the team. Annita had participated in a meeting prior to getting her license and had checked into several nets over the last 2 months. But with the official completion of the paperwork, she is now a full-fledged Queens member. Welcome. Adam Fine AB2IZ, EC Kings County HRU Participate 01/18/06 - Kings County ARES meeting Last year it was a lack of location, for the last two meetings it's been the weather. A virtual monsoon followed by some chilly temperatures, kept attendance down but not the positive atmosphere. Five members of Kings County ARES managed to make it to the first meeting of the year and they included AB2IZ, KA2KDQ, KB2SUR, KC2NBE and WA2JNF. Topics discussed included: Applications for 2006; ID cards; ongoing EC-01 course; Tabletop exercise; and Go-Bags. Our next meetings are scheduled for February 15th, 2006 and March 15th, 2006. Kings County ARES meetings are held at Methodist Hospital in the Executive Dining Room - East Pavilion. We welcome, encourage and invite all amateur radio operators to participate. Thanks to Tony, KC2JXM, for managing this net. Nassau County - Jim Mezey W2KFV, DEC Nassau County HRU Participate, Forum Presenter Nassau ARES had a quiet month as we entered the new year. Nassau ARES attended and participated in HRU 2006.We also had a ARES table where we distributed flyers and applications. At our January meeting, we had nice presentation by Lorrie, KC2CHA on Introduction to Disaster Services for Red Cross. There was a question and answer session. We have added the Village of Lynbrook to our list of served agencies as we have completed and tested an antenna drop at that location. We have equipment yet to be installed in the 1st and 9th Fire Battalions. Suffolk County - Bill Schiebel N2NFI, DEC Suffolk County: HRU Participate, Forum Presenter Walter M. Each NLI DEC, N2YBB, W2KFV and N2NFI gave a presentation/report about their program followed by a very lively Q&A. Allen Pitts W1AGP of ARRL did a great job in the "Katrina Response" forum. ARRL Staff appointees also attend the ARRL forum moderated by NLI SM George Tranos N2GA. Many questions were fielded concerning Emergency Communications, by the NLI ARES staff. The NLI 2005 SET and Annual EC reports were sent to ARRL. Not all Suffolk ECs reporting, we need to improve on that. * From Jim Minor W2DSX, Section Traffic Manager Section Traffic Manager's Report for JANUARY 2006: THE ARRL PUBLIC SERVICE HONOR ROLL Month of JANUARY 2006 New York City/Long Island Section Monthly qualifying total: 70 or more points [STATION] [PSHR CATEGORY/POINTS] [TOTAL] 1 2 3 4 5 6 TOTAL AB2IZ 40 14 20 230 0 0 304 KB2KLH 40 40 20 0 0 0 100 W2DSX 40 40 20 0 0 0 100 KE2SX 33 36 10 0 0 0 79 All stations are encouraged to report in even if it's less than the qualifying total. The ARES E-Letter to debut (Aug 11, 2005) -- Licensed League members with ARRL Field Organization appointments involving emergency communication or public service will be the first to receive the debut issue of The ARES E-Letter! The premier edition of the monthly national newsletter is set for release Wednesday, August 17, and will publish on the third Wednesday of each month after that. Since 9/11, interest within the Amateur Radio community in emergency communication and public service has greatly increased. Anyone with an interest in emergency communication or public service activities can sign up online to receive The ARES E-Letter. Each issue will contain a wealth of after-action reports, editorials, technical tips, news and views--information you'd otherwise have to wait for in QST. Timeliness, utility and inspiration are the goals of this informative publication that's devoted entirely to Amateur Radio emergency communication and public service. Editing the first issue is former long-time ARRL Headquarters staff member Rick Palm, K1CE, who oversaw activities involving ARRL Section Managers, the ARRL Field Organization and the Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES). We invite subscribers to share a copy with club newsletter editors or with friends who may not be ARRL members but still might be interested in receiving it.
