March 2009 |
Hello!
This is March 2009 edition of the New York City-Long Island Section
"e-Happenings" newsletter.
This newsletter is here to serve the Amateur Radio community in our area. We
welcome and
encourage all submissions. Help make this your newsletter. We especially
encourage NLI Radio
clubs and Organizations to submit their meeting announcements, guest
speakers and any special
events. Please submit any information for the February issue prior to the
end of January.
Section News
Section News is available ONLY on the world-wide-web. See the NLI site at:

HAPPENINGS
* From Mike Lisenco N2YBB, Section Manager
Some new things for March!
First, with the addition of Mitch Cohen N2RGA as the new webmaster for NLI,
we've started to update the NLI website. The homepage sports a new logo and
look. As I can, each link will be updated as well. Please log into
www.hudson.arrl.org/nli to see what we've been doing.
Club events are being kept up to date on the "Event Calendar". We've already
received a list of events from GSBARC for the year, and these events with
contact information can be found using the "NLI Events" link at the top of
the homepage. If you would like your club event publicized and listed on the
calendar, please send me an email with the pertinent information. Be sure to
include the dates(s) and contact information for the club/responsible party.
Also be certain to include a link to the information on your website. I will
not cull the information from your club newsletters as I will not assume
that you want the event publicized. You must email me with a specific
request to include the event on the Section calendar.
-----
I am also very happy to announce that we have included a study guide
designed to help an individual studying for the Technician level license
and/or studying to upgrade to the General class license.
The online "textbook": “An Amateur Radio Technician and General Class
License Study Guide” can be viewed in pdf format and it is for the use of
anyone who is studying to either become a licensed amateur radio operator or
to upgrade their operating privileges.
I would like to acknowledge and publicly thank John Nordlund AD5FU, the
author, for allowing us to publish it and use it on-line free of charge.
John, the current Arkansas ARES Section Emergency Coordinator, along with
his editor Lynette Dowdy, KD5QMD, put a lot of hours into this project and
they deserve the credit and recognition that is due them. On behalf of
everyone in NLI who will make use of this tool, I thank them.
A footnote. It is unfortunate that their work (given freely with only the
request of acknowledgment of authorship) has been plagiarized by another who
refuses to rightfully credit the true author. What is even more unfortunate,
I am sorry to say, is that this has occurred within the NLI section. This
individual has claimed credit for authoring this work on his own. He has
deleted author and editor references from the work, placed his own cover
page on the work with his "logo" and has claimed credit for the work. Such
behavior sullies us all and should be recognized for what it is; cheating!
The irony is that John would have granted this person the right to use his
work had he been asked. He has since asked this person to cease and desist
using his work - but he has been ignored. I would have expected to see this
type of behavior in a
child caught cheating on an exam in elementary school - not an adult. And
particularly not from a fellow ham! Shame!
I bring this to your attention to try to right a wrong that these two good
people have suffered at the hands of this plagiarist. I am appalled at,
though no longer surprised by, his shenanigans. Many of you know who this
is, and I hope that you will bring pressure on this person to right this
wrong and to make him stop this type of contemptuous behavior. Let him know
that he has no respect and sets an example that brings ignominy not only to
the NLI Section, but to his "club", his "friends" and all of Amateur Radio.
Ok. Off my soapbox and on to other things.
-----
First, congratulations to the Peconic Amateur Radio Club (PARC) on their
very successful qso last week with the International Space Station (NA1ISS)
through the ARISS program. 16 students from the Hampton Bays Middle School
were able to ask some very poignant,
intelligent questions of Commander Mike Fincke who answered them during
their 9 minute window. You can watch a video of the event at:
http://www.27east.com/story_video.cfm?id=98 .
-----
For those of us who like working HF after dark, March 29, 2009 marks a new
chapter in 40 Meter DXing. As of that date, all Region 1 shortwave
broadcasters are supposed to move to 7200MHz and above, and hams in Region 1
will be allowed to use 7100-7200 MHz for communications. NO MORE SPLIT!!!!
Some countries have already allowed their hams to use that portion of the 40
Meter band, with the rest to follow suit shortly. ITU Region 1 encompasses
Europe, Northern Asia (Russia east to the Bering Strait border with the US),
the Middle East and Africa. Region 2, already using 40 Meters up to 7300
MHz, includes all of the Americas. The USA 40 meter band plan will not
change.
-----
The Triple Play Award continues. I received my certificate (#53) last week
and I must say that it is rather nice. The TPA requires confirming contacts
in all three modes (phone, cw and digital) with all 50 states for a total of
150 contacts. Each contact must be confirmed using Logbook of the World. For
more information on the Triple Play Award and other ARRL awards go to:
http://www.arrl.org/awards.
-----
My dance card is already rather full for the month of March. I will
attending meetings at the Northeast Wireless ARC, the Nassau County Police
ARC, LIMARC and possibly one or two more this month. If you would like me to
attend an upcoming meeting of your club, please email me at
n2ybb@arrl.org
and I'll be more than happy to set it up.
-----
I attended the Hudson Division Cabinet/Club Presidents meeting on February
7th. It was a great meeting with a number of Section club presidents in
attendance. There were a few power point presentations and a discussions on
a number of topics of interest and concern. For those who would like to hear
what went on, a podcast of the meeting is available on the Hudson Division
Website: http://www.hudson.arrl.org/pages/podcast.htm
-----
Congratulations go to Radio Central ARC. Their February 2009 newsletter -
"RANDOM Oscillations" won the February Division Newsletter of the Month.
Congratulations to editor and president, Neil M. Heft, KC2KY for on a job
well done. To be considered for this monthly award, clubs need to submit
their newsletter to Frank Fallon N2FF, Hudson Division Director at
n2ff@arrl.org.
-----
Once again, let's not forget the LIMARC Hamfest Sunday, March 8th. For more
info go to the club website at www.limarc.org. Other upcoming Hamfests
include the GSBARC Hamfest on May 9th (www.gsbarc.org) and the HOSARC
Hamfest in June (www.hosarc.org).
-----
Congratulations to Walter Wenzel, KA2RGI, who has been named executive
director of the Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts. Walter is the ARES
Emergency Coordinator and RACES Radio Officer for the Town of Babylon.
-----
That's it for me this month. I will be at the ARRL table at the LIMARC
Hamfest on March 8th. Please stop by and say hello.

From Jim Mezey W2FKV, ARES Section Emergency Coordinator
The NY/LI DEC's and I had a reorganization meeting where the subject of the
meeting was
"Where are we are now? ... Where are we going?" A lot of information and
ideas passed hands.
Some ideas included:
Assist other Districts in events/ share info
Develop a Section Emergency Plan following NIMS and ICS
Establish a working relationship between Districts
Establish our assets, resources and needs within the Section
Consider mutual aid assistance when needed
We have a lot of work a head of us and I am hoping we will get full
cooperation of all EC's in all Districts.

Jim W2FKV
