This is the April edition of the NY City / Long Island "ehappenings" Section newsletter! This newsletter is here to serve the Amateur Radio community in our area. I welcome and encourage all submissions. Please help make this your newsletter! I especially encourage officers of the area's Amateur Radio clubs to submit their meeting announcements, guest speakers and special events. February was a relatively quiet month. It was spent going to club meetings to recruit new members and going to monthly borough meetings to bring the general membership up to date. March will see the first ARES drill in recent memory. New York City ARES will be deploying throughout the five boroughs as if an emergency caused an activation and we will also be participating with Westchester, Nassau and Suffolk County ARES to ascertain the ability to communicate throughout the region into the County Red Cross EOCs. Nets 1 each Monday ARES NET Manhattan ARES meeting canceled due to storm call up. Next meeting February 19 at 7:30 PM location to be announced. Chris Sierra KC2KFW; EC Bronx: Eusebio S. Rodriguez has rejoined the Bronx ARES group under the call sign WB2SEB. Adam Fine AB2IZ, EC Kings County: Kings County ARES meeting: Held on Wednesday, February 18th, 2004. Topics discussed: Net check-in procedure, weekly Kings County ARES net and the NCS schedule, upcoming events, district-wide drill on March 6th, 2003, Red Cross forms, ARES applications and ID cards, and Kings County ARES website (thanks to N2RGA). We also had a guest speaker: Jeff Schneller N2HPO from SATERN. He gave a small talk and presentation about how the Salvation Army works and how ARES and SATERN will work together in the future. In attendance: AB2IZ, KA2FXR, KA2KDQ, KB2SUR, KB2TWY, KB2VDV, KC2CBL, KC2JXM, KC2LWP, KC2LYT, KC2MGY, KD2AU, N2ECR, N2HPO, N2KEN, N2RGA, N2YBB, W2/8R1B, W2DEA, W2MPL, and WA2JNF. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, March 17th, 2004 at 7:30pm. The location is UCP 121 Lawrence Street, between Ocean Parkway and Seton Place Brooklyn, NY. Joseph Nieves, N2TEE, EC Richmond County: Red Cross volunteer applications all submitted. Standardizing on 4th Thursday of the month for county meetings. Working on selecting date/time for boro net. Requesting permission from repeater owner once boro net is defined. Requesting permission for Boro Wide Test. Work with repeater owner and membership on mapping out coverage locally (aka dead zone search). Work on recruitment efforts. Nassau County - EC Mario Maltese WF2T reporting for DEC George Gluck WA2WKV: Charles Alfano WA2GUG gave a class on APRS at the monthly meeting on February 10. On February 19th, an OEM drill was held in which ARES participated at the 1st Fire Battalion EOC and the American Red Cross. Nassau ARES also had a table at the LIMARC hamfest, and signed several new members that will be tallied next month (staffed hours NOT counted in total). Contact Claire at CAHEIL@aol.com * The First Mid Atlantic QSO Party The first annual Mid Atlantic QSO Party is a new event to give amateur radio operators across the country and around the world the opportunity to enjoy the fun of a regional QSO Party. The First MAQSO Party will meet on May 8th, 2004 from 1600-0200 UTC and May 9th 2004 from 1600-0000 UTC, on all HF bands except WARC bands and on VHF/UHF through 450 MHz. For the purposes of this event the Mid Atlantic region consists of Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, Virginia, and West Virginia. The Mid Atlantic QSO Party provides operators the chance to pursue a competitive challenge in a low-key, low-pressure atmosphere. In short, the purpose of this event is for each ham operator to have fun, enjoy the event, and seek whatever level of participation they desire. The MAQSO Party committee will offer a multitude of certificates and awards, too. All amateur radio operators are invited to check the MAQSO Party website at http://www.qsl.net/maqso for full details and contest rules, including state and county maps, and the list of standardized 5-letter county abbreviations, all available for downloading. There are a lot of county multipliers in seven states! The MAQP Website also includes information about contest logging software and modules that the major designers have already prepared for their customers. There are also some logging programs that have been prepared specifically for MAQP use. To take advantage, send an e-mail to prereg@arrl.org. On the subject line, include the course name or number (eg, EC-00#). In the message body, include your name, call sign, e-mail address, and the month you want to start the course. We will be setting up on Friday, April 23rd at 12PM at the RCA Site off of Rocky Point Road (Marconi Blvd.) in Rocky Point. The site is approximately 3 miles north of Route 25 on the right side of the road. We will have signs up at the site. We will be there until Saturday 8PM.
