HAPPENINGS
* From Tom Carrubba KA2D, Section Emergency Coordinator

New York City District - DEC Michael Lisenco N2YBB:
We held our first drill of the year in the beginning of the
month by testing our Simplex capabilities within the 5
boroughs.  February also saw the start of the 2005 event
season with two events in Brooklyn.  The rest of the month
has been spent keeping warm and up to date in our training.

John Healy, KA2ABV, EC New York County
I wish to thank those Manhattan ARES Members who
participated in our Citywide Simplex Drill. We gleaned
valuable information from this drill, which will enable us
to better coordinate communications and more efficiently
pass traffic in the event some disaster were to render our
local repeaters inoperative.

Our next Manhattan Event, our first for this year, will be
the Central Park Biathlon on Sunday, March 20th. The race
starts at 8:30 AM, one hour later than usual. The event
organizers have asked us to gather at 8:00 AM at the
Boathouse (74th Street and the East Drive, in Central Park)
for assignment. We need ten operators to cover this event.
All members who can make it are asked to contact John Healy,
EC for Manhattan, at 917-886-0825, or via email at
KA2ABV@ARRL.NET .
We wish to thank the Broadcast Employees Amateur Radio
Society, W2ABC, (147.27 MHz) for allowing us the use of
their repeater for coordination purposes during the simplex
drill and their generosity in permitting Manhattan ARES to
designate their two meter repeater as the main Manhattan
Tactical Frequency. We also thank the Apple Repeater Club,
KK2T, (444.050 MHz) for the use of their repeater as our
backup Tactical Frequency.
We are holding our weekly Manhattan ARES Net on the BEARS
repeater each Tuesday evening beginning at 7:30 PM. All are
invited to check in.
Manhattan ARES will be assisting BEARS with its VE sessions
at the ABC corporate campus on Manhattan's upper West Side.
We are currently finalizing details for this program, and
further details will be posted on both the BEARS website
http://www.w2abc.org/, the NYC-ARES website
http://www.aresnyc.org/, and in QST.
Our entry-level amateur radio class taught by Brian Wruble
(W3BW) and John Healy (KA2ABV) is almost over! The final
review session will be held this Wednesday, March 9th .
Classes are being held on Wednesday evenings at the
Collegiate Church on West End Avenue between 77th and 78th
Street in Manhattan. On Wednesday, March 16th, we are
holding a VE session at the church so our students can sit
for the FCC Examination. We still need one more Volunteer
Examiner to administer the test. If you are a VE and are
available to assist in testing, please contact
KA2ABV@ARRL.NET .
Next New York County ARES meeting - Thursday, April 21st ,
2005 at 6:30pm
Meeting location: San Remo, 146 Central Park West, at 75th
Street. Please note that after a poll of our membership,
Manhattan ARES will hold its meetings on a bi-monthly basis
rather than each month from this point forward.

winter's day.
Cherry Tree 10 Mile Run - 02/19/05
Another first time event for Kings County ARES also held in
Prospect Park, Brooklyn.  This is one of our longer events
and was held on a very cold winter's day with very high wind
gusts.  All operators were and should be commended for their

Kings County ARES meeting - 02/16/05
Topics:  After action discussions of the simplex drill,
Valentine's Day 5K and Cherry Tree 10 Mile Run; Discussions
of how events are set up in Prospect Park and our staffing

KC2MGY, N2ECR, N2RGA, N2YBB, W2DEA, and WA2JNF.
This meeting was lightly attended due to a last minute
meeting location change.  At this time we are in the process
of securing another location.  All information regarding the
new meeting location and Kings County ARES can be found at
www.kingscountyares.org.  Thanks to Mitch, N2RGA, for all
the work he does maintaining the site.
Kings County ARES has a weekly net, every Sunday at 8PM.  We
meet on the W2CMA repeater (446.675/-5MHz/114.8) in order to
discuss issues of relevance to the ARES community at large
and Kings County ARES specifically.  We welcome, encourage
and invite all amateur radio operators to participate.
The next meeting will be on Wednesday, March 16th, 2005 at
7:30pm, the location TBA.

Nassau County - Mario Maltese WF2T; EC Nassau County
(for George Gluck, DEC, WA2WKV).
Nassau ARES hosted a table at the LIMARC hamfest on 2/27/05.

ARES members held their monthly meeting at the Red Cross
Chapter on 2/8/05. After a short PowerPoint presentation on
some basic packet deployment plans and TNC commands
by Mario Maltese WF2T, the group broke out for hands on
exercises on the 5 packet stations that were set up around
the room and Commo office at the chapter. By popular demand,
the event will be continued at the next regularly scheduled meeting.
On the 23rd, the American Red Cross had a call-down drill in
which ARES participated. Responses were high by email and wide
area repeater.
On the 28th, ARES was placed on Alert status by the American
Red Cross, under the direction of Nassau EMO, due to the threat of
coastal flooding. No deployment took place.

Tom Carrubba KA2D, Section Emergency Coordinator:
I am pleased to see the interest in packet radio and the
addition of new TelPac nodes in the NLI section.
The Interplex Team has made progress gathering resources in
their effort to complete the section-wide repeater linking
project. We do need more cooperation.
EC and AEC participation in the ARRL CCE EC program
continues to grow. There is still a long list of NLI ARES
appointees who need to come aboard.
