HAPPENINGS
* From Mike Lisenco N2YBB, Section Manager
Let me start off by wishing everyone a very Happy Passover and a very Happy
Easter.
In March I had the pleasure of attending a number of cub meetings. I was
invited to the monthly meetings at the Northeast Wireless ARC, the Nassau
County Police ARC and finally to the Grumman ARC. I was very impressed with
the membership of these clubs and I am grateful for their hospitality. April
is an abbreviated month due to the Passover and Easter holidays. I will be
attending the joint Long Island DX Association – Yankee Clipper Contest Club
meeting on April 17th and the Great South Bay ARC meeting on
April 30th. So far, I have been invited to the May meetings of
LIMARC and the Peconic ARC. Information on these clubs, meetings and
locations can be found in the club listings later in this newsletter.
If you would like me to attend an upcoming
meeting of your club, please email me at
n2ybb@arrl.org
and I'll be more than happy to set it up.
-----
Kudos go to Joe Nieves N2TEE (Staten Island
ARES Emergency Coordinator), Jan Wolf W2KMA (Staten Island ARES Assistant
Emergency Coordinator), David ‘Lefty’ Lefkowitz KB2KAB (Staten Island ARES
Assistant Emergency Coordinator) and Carl Glovinsky WA2IAF (Staten Island
ARES). On March 11, 2009, the Richmond County Medical Society formally
announced that they were donating $3,000 to purchase Amateur Radio equipment
for their disaster preparedness program. This is the culmination of years of
hard work on the part of Staten Island ARES to develop a partnership with
the hospitals on Staten Island by providing hospital staff with Technician
level licensing classes, VE sessions and guidance and training (through
drills) in the use of ham radio and ARES to provide communications
backup/support during a disaster. A press conference was held in which ARES
was represented by Jan W2KMA, AEC for Staten Island.
-----
Congratulations to John Blowsky, KB2SCS, on
his article in the April 2009 issue of CQ magazine entitled “EcomScs and
GateWayScs.” The article describes Emcomm software designed for packet use
that John has developed. For more information read the article which starts
on page 20 of the current issue of CQ or email John at
kb2scs@optonline.net. John is the NLI ASM for Digital Mode
Communication as well as the ARES EC/RACES RO for Islip in Suffolk County.
-----
2009 is the Year of the State QSO Party. Until
this year, New York did not have a state QSO party. This is no longer the
case. The Rochester DX Association has just announced that they will be
sponsoring the New York QSO Party on October 17, 2009 from 1800Z thru 0600Z
on October 18, 2009. The QSO Party will feature all modes (Phone -- CW--
RTTY/Digital). For more information and the rules please go to their
website:
www.rdxa.com.
-----
The official
2009 ARRL
Field Day Web page is up and running. This page includes a
summary of available resources, with links to Field Day forms and rules,
logos and reference links. “Field Day is the largest on-the-air operating
event," said ARRL Field Day Manager Dan Henderson, N1ND. "The event draws
tens of thousands of radio amateurs to the airwaves over a single weekend."
This year, Field Day is June 27-28. Most clubs in NLI also sponsor Field Day
events. Please checkout their websites. The NLI website will also publish
local field day information as we get it.
-----
Let's not forget the Great South Bay ARC Hamfest on May 9th (www.gsbarc.org).
Other upcoming Hamfests include the HOSARC Hamfest (www.hosarc.org)
and LIMARC Hamfest (www.limarc.org)
in June.
-----
And finally…………. 300!!!!! I had the distinct
pleasure of working VK9GMW April 7th on 30 meter CW. Mellish Reef
is a new one for me; the elusive 300th DXCC entity. What’s next?
Honor Roll!? Hopefully. 5 band DXCC? Only 45 more needed on 80! VUCC this
summer on 6 meters? Who knows, only 50 more on that band for the award!
Amateur Radio has so much to offer. For those of us who had the pleasure of
listening to Kay Craigie N3KN (ARRL First Vice President) at HRU this past
January, she challenged us to do at least one new thing this year. To go out
and find something that we haven’t done before so that by doing something
new we renew our interest in the hobby. So be it in the hobby or the service
aspect of amateur radio – go out and do at least one new thing this year.
Recharge your batteries, renew your interest. And maybe spark someone else’s
interest so that they too might become a ham. And most of all – have fun
doing it!
-----
That's it for me this month. I will be at the
ARRL table at the GSBARC Hamfest on May 9th. Please stop by and say hello.
73,
Mike N2YBB
