HAPPENINGS

* Field Day is NEXT month - June 24, 25 & 26
ARRL Field Day weekend is Friday, June 24, through Sunday,
June 26, 2005.  Field Day is a contest-style operating event which
simulates an emergency.  Clubs and individuals around the country
will set up portable stations and operate for 24 consecutive hours
and attempt to make contact with as many other stations as possible.
This simulates a real emergency.  Field Day is a great opportunity
to learn and practice important skills.  You can learn how to set up
and operate a temporary station using emergency power, either a
generator, battery or other sources such as solar, wind or even
bicycle powered!   It's a fun time and many clubs make it their largest
event of the year.  Next month, I will publish a list of clubs holding
Field Day.  Clubs - please send me your Field Day plans!  Please
include: Name of club, Location of Field Day (site name and address),
Planned operating class (1A, 2A, etc..), Club Contact Person,
Contact e-mail and phone #, club website, talk-in frequency,
day and time setup is to begin, any special modes or antenna plans,
any other important information and directions to your site.
For those of you who have never been to Field Day, try to visit
at least one (and preferably more than one) Field Day site. As
John KA2YMR (sk) used to say: Field Day is the most fun you can
have in ham radio in one day!  Please submit all Field Day plans
to n2ga@arrl.org

* From Tom Carrubba KA2D, Section Emergency Coordinator

New York City District - DEC Michael Lisenco N2YBB:
Brooklyn ARES participated in the Brooklyn half-marathon
this month.  The Bronx is preparing for its first event of
the season. We have been busy recruiting and training.  The
bulk of the a-thon season is nearly upon us.
The Bronx continues to rebuild with the addition of a new
member.  Our first event of the year will occur in Van
Cortlandt Park the first weekend in April.

John Healy, KA2ABV, EC New York County
I wish to thank those Manhattan ARES Members who
participated in the Central Park Biathlon, Rich W2RAG, and
Mike KC2NCV. It would be nice to see more of our members
come out to these events since they serve as invaluable
training grounds in preparation for the next disaster. I
would also like to thank Rich for showing solidarity by
traveling out to Brooklyn to participate in one of the
Brooklyn events last month.
We are currently investigating the possibility of several
events during the month of May and will keep you posted. Any
members who know of events where ARES can be of service are
asked to contact John Healy, EC for Manhattan, at
KA2ABV@ARRL.NET .

We wish to thank the Apple Repeater Club, KK2T, (444.050
MHz) for the use of their repeater Broadcast during the
biathlon and their generosity in permitting Manhattan ARES
to designate their UHF repeater as the backup Manhattan
Tactical Frequency.
We are holding our weekly Manhattan ARES Nets on the BEARS
repeater (147.27) each Tuesday evening beginning at 7:30 PM.
All are invited to check in.
Manhattan ARES will be assisting BEARS with its VE sessions
at the ABC corporate campus on Manhattan's upper West Side.
We are currently finalizing details for this program, and
further details will be posted on both the BEARS website
http://www.w2abc.org/, the NYC-ARES website
http://www.aresnyc.org/, and in QST.
Our entry-level amateur radio class taught by Brian Wruble
(W3BW) and John Healy (KA2ABV) is over and we are pleased to
report that we have five new hams! They are:
Betty  KC2NYE,  Leon   KC2NYF,  Fran   KC2NYG,   Jeanne
KC2NYH, Frank  KC2NYI
Congratulations to all of you on a job well done!

Tom Carrubba KA2D, Section Emergency Coordinator:
I received many emails and telephone calls concerning the
recent Homeland Security Drill. This drill was conducted
outside of NLI. NLI was not formally invited to participate.
May I remind our group to stand down from any incidents
outside of NLI. As CT and NNJ were involved NLI should be
aware and be on a "soft" standby in case of a request for
mutual aid.

Met with Len Battista W2FX, NLI ASM Suffolk County to
discuss past issues and goals for future.

2005 SKYWARN training schedule will be posted on OKX
webpage; http://www.erh.noaa.gov/er/okx/spottertraining.html
