Welcome! This is the June edition of the NY City / Long Island "ehappenings" Section newsletter! This newsletter is here to serve the Amateur Radio community in our area. I welcome and encourage all submissions. Please help make this your newsletter! I especially encourage officers of the area's Amateur Radio clubs to submit their meeting announcements, guest speakers and special events. Please submit any information for the July issue prior to the end of June. June 2006 is the 62nd regular edition since this newsletter was inaugurated in March, 2001. Section News Section News is available ONLY on the world-wide-web. A strong club can be a motivator, educator, social system and service organization. It can provide mentors (elmers) to the newcomers and reinvigorate the old-timers with new blood. Good clubs have activities such as meetings, hamfests, special events, public service and field day. They work hard to keep their activities interesting and relevant to their membership. They continually look to improve what they do and how they do it. They get new people involved and rotate tasks so that one person or a small group of people are not the only ones actually doing things. Clubs encourage their members to be active on the air! We are radio amateurs and as such we should actually operate radios now and again to sustain our interest and that of our hobby and service. Field Day is just around the corner. It is important for club leaders to use the resources that are available to them to publicize their field day activities. Use your club PIO to send out press releases. Use your ARES contacts to get public officials down to your site. Use your experienced members to show the newcomers how to set up and operate. Use your field day site as a model for portable emergency operations. Use some different modes and try some new antennas this year. Above all - GET ON THE AIR for field day! Your ARRL section staff is here to help you. Most section managers including myself send out bulletins regularly to our members. We want and need to know your field day information! Please observe the following do's and don'ts: - DO send you field day information to your section manager - DO include your CLUB name, field day location, day and time your setup will begin, contact person with name, phone # and e-mail address, club website, talk-in frequency, proposed field day class (# of stations and category), field day callsign to be used, GOTA callsign to be used (if any), special field day plans. - DO download the field day package from ARRL HQ http://www.arrl.org - DO talk up field day on your club's repeater, at meetings and in your newsletter - DO invite your local village or town administrator to your field day site - DO send out press releases about field day in advance - DO follow up with local media to attempt to get coverage - DO use your section staff (ACC, PIC, SEC, etc.) for help if you need it - DON'T assume someone else will provide this information for your club - DON'T assume people will just show up at field day - RECRUIT them to come down! - DON'T let one person in your club do all the work - DO make sure to HAVE FUN! - DO ask the section manager to visit your site Field Day is the most fun you can have in Amateur Radio in one day. It is a great opportunity to show your stuff and to energize your membership. Let's make this field day the best one yet! Good luck and I hope to hear from you about your field day plans and see you on Field Day! 73, George * From Tom Carrubba KA2D, Section Emergency Coordinator Tom was unable to file a report this month but did want me to indicate that he has received reports from the districts. For more information, contact MIKE PATINO N2BMU@ARRL.NET * Staten Island ARES participates in "STORM REHEARSAL" Staten Island, N.Y. The lessons learned during last year's horrendous hurricanes in the Gulf Coast have not been lost on those in the Emergency Response community in New York City. In preparation for the upcoming storm season, Staten Island and New York County Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) members recently participated in a drill sponsored by The American Red Cross in Greater New York. Code-named "The Staten Island Storm Rehearsal", the drill was designed to prepare volunteers by giving a hands-on experience in emergency shelter operations. The drill was held on Sunday, May 21, 2006 at P.S. 44, 80 Maple Parkway, in Staten Island. ARES served as the primary communicators for most of the drill, which included "non-working" cell phones and a "power outage". When the "blackout" scenario occurred, the hams were able to provide a seamless transition to battery-backup power in order to maintain ongoing critical communication with the Red Cross EOC in Manhattan. "ARES is relied upon by our clients, like the Red Cross, to be able to quickly, adequately and professionally set up and run a portable communications system to help those affected by a disaster. In order to provide that service, ARES members participate in drills such as this to hone our skills" said Mike Lisenco (N2YBB), ARRL ARES District Emergency Coordinator for New York City. "The drill provided the opportunity to test our readiness", said Joe Nieves (N2TEE), ARRL ARES Emergency Coordinator for Staten Island. "We need to be prepared at all times should we be called upon to support our community." ARES was represented in Staten Island by: Joe Nieves, N2TEE; David Lefkowitz, KA2KAB; Carl Glovinsky, WA2IAF; Chris Kilpert, KC2OBN; Gabe Cheng, N2GAB; Stu Siet, WA2JNF and Mike Lisenco, N2YBB. The ARES E-Letter to debut (Aug 11, 2005) -- Licensed League members with ARRL Field Organization appointments involving emergency communication or public service will be the first to receive the debut issue of The ARES E-Letter! The premier edition of the monthly national newsletter is set for release Wednesday, August 17, and will publish on the third Wednesday of each month after that. Since 9/11, interest within the Amateur Radio community in emergency communication and public service has greatly increased. More than ever, hams are volunteering to help meet the communication needs of our nation, states and communities. The ARES E-Letter is a response to this expanding awareness. Anyone with an interest in emergency communication or public service activities can sign up online to receive The ARES E-Letter. Each issue will contain a wealth of after-action reports, editorials, technical tips, news and views--information you'd otherwise have to wait for in QST. Timeliness, utility and inspiration are the goals of this informative publication that's devoted entirely to Amateur Radio emergency communication and public service. Editing the first issue is former long-time ARRL Headquarters staff member Rick Palm, K1CE, who oversaw activities involving ARRL Section Managers, the ARRL Field Organization and the Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES). We invite subscribers to share a copy with club newsletter editors or with friends who may not be ARRL members but still might be interested in receiving it. Those receiving the premier edition also may opt out of getting further copies if they wish. RF input/output 144.970. Internet (Telnet) is DXC.K2LS.COM, either standard port 23, or port 7300. The K2LS node is filtered to pass only spots from zones 1 thru 8, but, I can allow any combination of spots/bands to be passed at the users request. Some users connect simultaneously with a different ssid, i.e. KA2D & KA2D-3, enabling them to see both filtered and unfiltered information. The node also filters all talk/chat from outside zones 1 thru 8.
