************************************************************************ HAPPENINGS
* From Mike Lisenco N2YBB, Section Manager
In April I was invited to the monthly meeting at the Great South Bay ARC. GSBARC is a very active club with a dynamic membership. Take a look at the events that they have listed on the NLI website and their website. It was a pleasure spending a few hours with the club and I thank you for inviting me. My dance card is open for May and so far I’m only scheduled to be at the Amateur Radio Club – Emergency Communications Service (ARC-ECS) meeting in Queens in June. Information on NLI clubs, meetings and locations can be found in the club listings later in this newsletter.
If you would like me to attend an upcoming meeting of your club, please email me at n2ybb@arrl.org and I'll be more than happy to set it up. ----- Kudos to Dr. John Allocca, WB2LUA. His on-line Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Training Course has been picked up by MARTS, the Malaysian Amateur Radio Transmitters' Society for use as their official training publication for their local amateur radio emergency service. The Tsunami of 2006 taught the local amateur radio society much. As they wrote to John, “many amateur radio groups came to provide communication help in my area but I noticed that none follow any procedures. There was chaos. Improper and messages not meant for the public know were transmitted and almost caused panic.”
They came to realize that they needed to train themselves and searched the web for an appropriate course of study.
John’s book has been available to hams free of charge for a number of years. A link to the book has been routinely found on the Larkfield ARC website for a number of years (www.larkfield.org). When I served as DEC for New York City District ARES I also used his book as an on-line resource.
John, who serves as the RACES RO/ARES EC for the Town of Huntington makes the book available to all hams free of charge in pdf format (or in print at cost from www.lulu.com)

----- ARRL Seeks Member Support for HR 2160To support HR 2160 -- The Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Enhancement Act of 2009 -- the ARRL is asking its membership to contact their members of the US House of Representatives with a request to become co-sponsors of this significant piece of legislation. "Getting a bill successfully through Congress is a formidable task -- one that is going to require the involvement of every ARRL member," said ARRL Regulatory Information Manager Dan Henderson, N1ND. "Working with our Washington consulting firm Chwat & Co, we are laying a dynamic approach that will allow us to make our case most effectively. We have developed a strategy to maximize our impact when dealing with each member of Congress." Since the anthrax scare that followed the 9-11 attacks, all incoming mail to Congress is delayed anywhere from four to six weeks while it is screened. This means using normal US Mail is no longer an effective method of letting Congress hear your voice. While e-mail is convenient, it is not effective, due to the large volume of e-mail that each Congressional office receives. "To ensure that ARRL members' letters are quickly and expediently received by Congress, our strategy is to ask ARRL members send their letters directly to Chwat & Co," said Henderson. "Chwat's staff will sort the letters by Congressional district and hand-deliver them to the appropriate House offices, providing a direct point of contact with the Congressman and their staff. This personal contact gives us the chance to provide not only letters from constituents, but information from the ARRL on why this legislation is important." The ARRL has provided a sample letter for League members to personalize and send to their Congressional representative. For more information on the Act and the sample letter, go to:

If you are an alumnus of Stuyvesant High School, especially if you were a member of their currently defunct Radio Club, please read this. One of your brethren, Mike Bornstein, K6UMO (Class of 1962), has been trying to get the Club restarted with a donation of equipment. He has been in contact with Lew Malchick, N2RQ, who is currently the faculty advisor for the Brooklyn Technical HS Radio Club. Lew has been involved with Amateur Radio in the NYC School System for many years and was kind enough to pick up the Stuyvesant callsign W2CLE as interim trustee until a member of the current Stuyvesant faculty steps up to the plate.
If you are an alumnus please contact Lew to help. He is in the process of setting up a meeting and demonstration with some of the faculty at Stuyvesant and could use your help. Please email him at N2RQ@arrl.net.
A Morse code contest was also held, and the boys all had a great time. The highlight of the day was the ‘find me’ game, a version of hide-and-seek wherein a scout and a radio club member with a handheld radio would hide. They’d then call on the radio, “can you find me?” And the other scouts with radios would try to track them down.
The Great South Bay Amateur Radio Club Prides itself on its commitment to public service events like this one. If you would like more information please send an email to info@gsbarc.net or visit our website at www.gsbarc.org
The official 2009 ARRL Field Day Web page is up and running. This page includes a summary of available resources, with links to Field Day forms and rules, logos and reference links. “Field Day is the largest on-the-air operating event," said ARRL Field Day Manager Dan Henderson, N1ND. "The event draws tens of thousands of radio amateurs to the airwaves over a single weekend." This year, Field Day is June 27-28. Most clubs in NLI also sponsor Field Day events. Please checkout their websites. The NLI website will also publish local field day information as we get it. -----
