Contact Steve at kc2gog@limarc.org * Dedication of NYC High School new Amateur Radio program A ceremony dedicating the new Amateur Radio program at the Norman Thomas High School in Manhattan will be held on Tuesday, June 8, at 2 PM. This Amateur Radio club and elective credit bearing course is directed by Bernie Umlas, N2NVU. The Steve Jacobson Memorial Amateur Radio Association (N2SJ) has provided the equipment, teaching materials and expertise to make this wonderful program a reality. Needless to say, this would not have been possible without the generous support we received in 2002 from the ARRL. The ceremony will take place on Tuesday June 8, 2004, 2:00 PM and will conclude promptly at 3:00 PM. The location is Norman Thomas High School, 111 East 33rd Street at Park Avenue, New York, NY 10016, Room 139 (the radio room). Submitted by Mitch Mernick, KC2EFR. Contact Mitch at mhm1836@aol.com * From Daniel Reisman NY2L, Official Observer Coordinator To: all club Presidents and repeater owners: Within the NYC/LI section over the past couple of months we have had increased jamming/illegal activity. To help facilitate the finding, eventual capture and building of a case toward prosecution of illegal activity, I am asking for each club or repeater owner within our section, who has a RDF Team and/or Group, to designate one person from that group as a team-leader and have them contact me. This person must have experience in RDFing and must be trustworthy because of the sensitive information he/she will be handling. Each team leader must have a list of those members within his/her group. Those members must be broken down into Base Monitoring Stations, and Mobile Monitoring Stations (having Doppler gear). The Base monitoring stations should also be broken down into 2 groups. Group one being those with Vertical antennas on their house and those with Directional Beams (and the band they are capable in using these antennas on). If your club or repeater group does not have a RDF team, this might be a good time to start thinking about forming one! My goal is to build a network, using E-mail reflectors, Text Messaging, Instant Messaging and phone numbers to move information regarding illegal activity to better find and capture a Jammer. Your help in this would be greatly appreciated. If a network can be built within our section to pass information efficiently, time in which it takes to get a Jammer off the air will decrease dramatically. Further more, this network could have advantages in times of emergency. If you have any questions or if you are designated as team leader for your club/repeater group, please feel free to send me an e-mail at NY2L@arrl.net (please put in the subject line [NYC/LI Section]). * From Diane Ortiz K2DO, Public Information Coordinator Is your club having Field Day this year? Want to get your club in the news? The time to send out those press releases and requests for proclamations is now! Field Day 2004 is the end of June and most publications/media need at least 2-3 weeks notice to get your item in their calendars. Help is available on the web at http://www.arrl.org/pio/contact/2004/0504.html where you will find sample press releases, PR tips and background information. The main PR website is http://www.arrl.org/pio 73, Diane Ortiz K2DO, ARRL NYC/LI Section Public Information Coordinator K2DO@arrl.org * From Tom Carrubba KA2D, Section Emergency Coordinator New York City District - DEC Michael Lisenco N2YBB: April began with our participation in the Palm Sunday "Wall of Remembrance" ceremony. Our operators provided communications support to Salvation Army SATERN at the event dedicated to remembering and honoring 116 fallen firefighters from Brooklyn and Brooklyn firehouses during the 9/11 tragedy. April is also the start of the a-thon season. Many members participated in various events around town, some ARES events and some club events. The first major ARES event of the season was the Brooklyn Half-Marathon in which 14 operators volunteered their time to provide crucial communications support to the annual event. The New York Road Runners Club has already invited us back for next year. The Red Cross of Greater New York has streamlined their course material and we expect to begin the new class in May at the borough level. We have added a reflector to the ARES website which is open to all members of New York City ARES. This unmoderated group has been a huge success with widespread participation from the membership. We welcome all to check-in to the weekly City-wide net Monday evenings at 8:00pm local time on the 147.000 repeater (negative shift, PL 136.5). John Kiernan KE2UN; EC for Manhattan: MS walk 4 operators KA2ABV, W3BW, W2YL, KE2UN - 7 hours each, total 28 hours. Adam Fine AB2IZ, EC Kings County: "Wall of Remembrance" Ceremony w/SATERN - 04/04/04. 1 member of Kings County ARES and one member of Queens County ARES provided communications between Salvation Army canteens at Keyspan Park, Coney Island, Brooklyn. WA2JNF and KC2IXE provided over 10 hours of communications for this event in a severe rainstorm. Brooklyn Half-Marathon - 04/24/04. This is the first time that an ARES group in the NYC District has handled this event. 14 operators volunteered their morning for this event, including: AB2IZ, K2RMX, KB2VDV, KC2CBL, KC2EDR, KC2EKE, KC2JOX, KC2JXM, N2ECR, N2KEN, N2RGA, W2/8R1B, W2MPL, and WA2JNF. The route covered much of south Brooklyn including the world famous boardwalk in Coney Island, the length of Ocean Parkway and beautiful, historic Prospect Park. Over 60 hours of communications were provided for this event. The New York Road Runners Club, coordinator of this event, was impressed by the operation and performance of ARES members and invited us back for next year. Kings County ARES meeting - 04/21/04. Topics discussed: Signing up for events, Brooklyn Half-Marathon, Kings County NSC Schedule, ID Cards, Submitting PSHR Reports and Upcoming events. In attendance: AB2IZ, K2RMX, KA2KDQ, KB2VDV, KC2CBL, KC2EDR, KC2EKE, KC2EYC, KC2HMS, KC2IDY, KC2JOX, KC2JXM, KC2MGY, N2ECR, N2LRX, N2RGA, N2YBB, W2/8R1B, W2MPL, WA2JNF and WB2AAP. Nassau County - Mario Maltese WF2T; EC Nassau County (for George Gluck, DEC, WA2WKV). This month's meeting was held at the American Red Cross on April 11th, where Red Cross instuctors gave ARES members the course on First Aid Basics, and 18 members received their certificates. WF2T gave a powerpoint presentation at the LIMARC on April 12th entitled "ARES and RACES: What are thedifferences?". April 18th ARES supported MS Walk at Jones Beach, and on the 25th, ARES supported the March of Dimes events at Long Beach, Glen Cove, and Eisenhower Park. Eighteen ARES members participated in these events. W2KFV attended a FEMA drill on Point of Distribution, and will file a report at the next meeting. Suffolk County - Bill Schiebel N2NFI, DEC SC: No report. Tom Carrubba KA2D, Section Emergency Coordinator: I have been studying the WINLink 2000 project along with NLI Digital ASM John Blowsky KB2SCS. There are many unanswered questions. We did not the EckoLink Conference. My initial opinion is that this is a very ambitious and costly project. I also believe there will have to be more WINLink nodes in our area.
