ARRL NYC/LI June E-happenings Newsletter Written and Edited by George Tranos N2GA, ARRL Section Manager NYC/LI Welcome! This is the June edition of the NY City / Long Island "ehappenings" Section newsletter! This newsletter is here to serve the Amateur Radio community in our area. I welcome and encourage all submissions. Please help make this your newsletter! I especially encourage officers of the area's Amateur Radio clubs to submit their meeting announcements, guest speakers and special events. Please submit any information for the July issue prior to the end of June. June 2005 is the 51st regular edition since this newsletter was inaugurated in March, 2001. Section News Section News is available ONLY on the world-wide-web. See the NLI site at: http://www.arrl.org/sections/?sect=NLI IN THIS ISSUE: * Field Day is THIS month - June 24, 25 & 26 * What have you done for ham radio lately? * From Tom Carrubba KA2D, Section Emergency Coordinator * Section Traffic Manager position filled by Jim Minor W2DSX * From the Section Traffic Manager * HOSARC Hamfest is Sunday, June 5 in Queens * LIMARC Hamfest is Sunday, June 12 in Bethpage * Ralph Bose WP4KO, silent key * Congratulations to BEARS for renewing as a special service club! * List of Frequently Asked Questions on BPL available * K2LS DX-Packetcluster node available for DX spots * Long Island Transmitter Hunters seeking new participants * ARRL C-CE course advance registration opportunities via e-mail * MetroCor is coordinating body for the New York metro area * Emil Tillona KD1F is the section DXCC card checker * Section VE Sessions * UPCOMING Club Events * NLI Section Website: http://hudson.arrl.org/nli HAPPENINGS * Field Day is THIS month - June 24, 25 & 26 ARRL Field Day weekend is Friday, June 24, through Sunday, June 26, 2005. Field Day is a contest-style operating event which simulates an emergency. Clubs and individuals around the country will set up portable stations and operate for 24 consecutive hours and attempt to make contact with as many other stations as possible. This simulates a real emergency. Field Day is a great opportunity to learn and practice important skills. You can learn how to set up and operate a temporary station using emergency power, either a generator, battery or other sources such as solar, wind or even bicycle powered! It's a fun time and many clubs make it their largest event of the year. Later this month, I will publish a list of clubs holding Field Day. Clubs - please send me your Field Day plans! Please include: Name of club, Location of Field Day (site name and address), Planned operating class (1A, 2A, etc..), Club Contact Person, Contact e-mail and phone #, club website, talk-in frequency, day and time setup is to begin, any special modes or antenna plans, any other important information and directions to your site. For those of you who have never been to Field Day, try to visit at least one (and preferably more than one) Field Day site. As John KA2YMR (sk) used to say: Field Day is the most fun you can have in ham radio in one day! Please submit all Field Day plans to n2ga@arrl.org * What have you done for ham radio lately? With Field Day upon us this month, there will be many newcomers coming down to their first Field Day. Now is the time to welcome them to our ranks and help them get started! Ham radio has always had a proud tradition of "elmering" newcomers into the hobby. When was the last time you said a positive word or helped out a fellow ham? It's never too late to take the first step and give something back to the hobby. Join a club, be a mentor, help out at a VE test session, run a license study class or help set up (or better yet - take down) at Field Day! Helping a new ham choosing and installing their first radio is a positive experience and very appreciated! Get that warm and fuzzy feeling - give something back and help the hobby stay healthy. Submitted by George Tranos N2GA. * From Tom Carrubba KA2D, Section Emergency Coordinator New York City District - DEC Michael Lisenco N2YBB: We have been busy recruiting and training. The a-thon season is upon us. The Bronx participated in its first event of the season. The first public service event of the year occurred on April 3rd when we provided communications support for the Van Cortlandt Park Track Club's "Urban Environmental Challenge 6.2 mile race through the forest that makes up the northern section of the park. Standing out in the rain during the event was an experience. Thanks go to: KC2FUZ, N2NSA, N2YBB, KB2VJM, WA2JNF, WB2SEB, KA2KCR, N2PQT and N2ZRC for their participation. John Healy, KA2ABV, EC New York County I would like to thank Mitch, N2RGA and Mike, N2YBB, for coming to the April Manhattan ARES meeting and giving us their PowerPoint presentation on Winlink 2000. Their talk was extremely informative, and several members of the Manhattan group are investigating the use of this communications software for future events. We are currently investigating the possibility of several events during the coming months and will keep you posted. Any members who know of events where ARES can be of service are asked to contact John Healy, EC for Manhattan, at 917-886-0825, or via email at KA2ABV@ARRL.NET . We are holding our weekly Manhattan ARES Nets on the BEARS repeater (147.27) each Tuesday evening beginning at 7:30 PM. All are invited to check in. Manhattan ARES will be assisting BEARS with its VE sessions at the ABC corporate campus on Manhattan's upper West Side. We are currently finalizing details for this program, and further details will be posted on both the BEARS website http://www.w2abc.org/, the NYC-ARES website http://www.aresnyc.org/, and in QST. Next New York County ARES meeting - Thursday, June 16th, 2005 at 6:30pm Meeting location: San Remo, 146 Central Park West, at 75th Street. Please note that after a poll of our membership, Manhattan ARES is holding its meetings on a bi-monthly basis Joe Nieves N2TEE; EC Richmond County: I would like to thank those stations who participated in the Richmond County Tri-Hospital Drill this past April 23rd. The simulated emergency required the coordination of each facility to help transport and relocate clients. Our team of hams also arrived early enough to conduct simplex tests which provided a wealth of information for future drills. The hospital board members and directors were very happy with our participation. Our efforts provided these organizations with loads of valuable data on logistical issues and areas requiring needed attention. Sunday, April 24th, was our first running event of the year. We staffed the Scott's 5K Memorial run honoring one of our FDNY heroes lost on September 11. Senator Schumer was on hand to say a few kind to all those gathered. The event organizers entrusted our fellow ARES members with the official duties of activating the two mile marker clocks. Dave KB2KAB and Jan W2KMA were whisked along in a FDNY vehicle just seconds prior to the start run to get those timers in place. To say the least, the organizers we quite pleased with our performance and professionalism. June 11th will find us participating in the Sgt. Doreen Scrimemti Scholarship Run. Looking for a good turn-out at this event. If you'd like to get involved, please contact me ASAP. Charles Gallo KG2V; EC Queens County No additional comment. Adam Fine AB2IZ, EC Kings County Kings County ARES meeting - 03/16/05 No meeting was held in April. We are in the process of securing a new meeting location. All information regarding this new location and Kings County ARES can be found at www.kingscountyares.org. Thanks to Mitch, N2RGA, for all the work he does maintaining the site. Kings County ARES has a weekly net, every Sunday at 8PM. We meet on the W2CMA repeater (446.675/-5MHz/114.8) in order to discuss issues of relevance to the ARES community at large and Kings County ARES specifically. We welcome, encourage and invite all amateur radio operators to participate. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, May, 18th, 2005 at 7:30pm, the location TBA. Nassau County - Mario Maltese WF2T; EC Nassau County (for George Gluck, DEC, WA2WKV). The monthly meeting of Nassau ARES took place on April 12, and was a continuation of the previous meeting's "hands-on" packet session. Six individual packet stations were set up, and members practiced connecting, executing TNC commands and sending messages. A planning session for the upcoming LI Marathon also took place. On April 17, thirteen ARES provided communications for the MS Walk at Jones Beach, where they helped to reunite two small children with their parents. ARES cadre also participated as observers in Nassau County's "Operation Unity" WMD drill held at the Supreme Court Building (and surrounding area) in Mineola. Suffolk County - Bill Schiebel N2NFI, DEC SC: Towns not reporting: East Hampton, Southampton, Shelter Island. County Meeting held on second Wednesday of the month. There is no EC appointed for Smithtown at this time. Southold, as well as others, would like to do an EC1 "cram class" along with a group test. We cannot seem to get this approved or the test, accepted as a methodology for EC 1 acceptance. The Suffolk county wide packet network is once again functional. EOC in Yaphank is still non functional and funding for its rebuilding seems to be non existent or at best low on the County's priority list Walter M. Wenzel, KA2RGI, EC Town of Babylon: No additional comments Joe Werner, KC2BPS, EC Town of Brookhaven No additional comments John A. Allocca, WB2LUA EC, Town of Huntington: No additional comments John Blowsky KB2SCS, EC Town of Islip No additional comments Don Fisher, N2QHV, EC Town of Southold: No additional comments. Ralph was a long-time member of the Wantagh Amateur Radio Club and a former club president. Wantagh newsletter editor Frank Porcaro N2RSO reports the following: "Yes, it was a shock to all of us. I'm not sure of the exact dates, but one evening during the week of April 10th, Ralph telephoned Jack Wicks, KI2M, for assistance, stating that part of his body was paralyzed, probably due to a stroke. Jack immediately dialed 911 and requested an ambulance for a possible stroke victim. When he arrived at Ralph's home, the ambulance was just pulling up to the curb. They transported him to NUMC where he was diagnosed with a stroke. He lived for two or three days, complaining of extreme hunger, but the hospital was reluctant to feed him, fearing that he would be unable to swallow properly, and might choke on the food. He was fed intravenously instead. A few days later he suffered another attack, and was subsequently pronounced dead. He was 61 years old. Ralph was a valuable asset to our club, and was instrumental in keeping the club from disbanding. He was also a true friend, and will be missed by me and probably all who knew him." 73 de Frank Porcaro, N2RSO * Congratulations to BEARS for renewing as a special service club! The Broadcast Employees Amateur Radio Society, Inc. (BEARS) has just renewed as a special service club of the ARRL - congratulations!
