Field Day is almost here! June 27 – 28, 2009

The official 2009 ARRL Field Day Web page is up and running. This page includes a summary of available resources, with links to Field Day forms and rules, logos and reference links. “Field Day is the largest on-the-air operating event," said ARRL Field Day Manager Dan Henderson, N1ND. "The event draws tens of thousands of radio amateurs to the airwaves over a single weekend." This year, Field Day is June 27-28. Most clubs in NLI also sponsor Field Day events. Please checkout their websites. The NLI website has been publishing local field day information as we get it. Information for events that have been submitted to me can be found in this newsletter and will also follow in a mailing next week.

------

On June 2nd I spoke to the Amateur Radio Club Emergency Communications Service (ARCECS) at their Queens meeting place – the American Red Cross Chapter on Queens Boulevard. ARCECS has a long history as a Partner Group to the Red Cross and has provided communications to them in time of need. Over the past few years, the club has formed a good working relationship with NYC District ARES as well so that joint resources may be efficiently utilized by both groups without overlap.

The club has a growing, dynamic membership. One new member was voted in at the meeting and the club also boasted with a couple of new hams and some upgrades.

One thing I found interesting was that some members did not yet belong to the ARRL. Along with a discussion of the benefits of membership, I reminded the club that they (the club) are eligible for a “bounty” or “finders fee” for each new member and/or renewal that they can provide to the League.

If you are a club representative that is unaware of how to do this, please email or call me and I will be happy to provide you with the information you need.

On June 6th I attended the Hudson Division Cabinet and Presidents meeting in Paramus, NJ. The meeting was well attended and a number of issues of interest were discussed. Perhaps one of the more pressing issues is the need for hams to contact their representatives regarding HR-2160. For more information, please continue reading this newsletter.

I also had the pleasure of attending all three of the spring/summer Section hamfests and met a number of members there. Thank you to all those who stopped by to say hello.

My dance card is empty for the month of July. I am scheduled to be at the Peconic ARC meeting in August. If you would like me to attend an upcoming meeting of your club, please email me at n2ybb@arrl.org and I'll be more than happy to set it up.

VERY IMPORTANT!

PLEASE READ AND FOLLOW-UP WITH A LETTER!!!

ARRL Seeks Member Support for HR 2160

To support HR 2160 -- The Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Enhancement Act of 2009 -- the ARRL is asking its membership to contact their members of the US House of Representatives with a request to become co-sponsors of this significant piece of legislation.

"Getting a bill successfully through Congress is a formidable task -- one that is going to require the involvement of every ARRL member," said ARRL Regulatory Information Manager Dan Henderson, N1ND. "Working with our Washington consulting firm Chwat & Co, we are laying a dynamic approach that will allow us to make our case most effectively. We have developed a strategy to maximize our impact when dealing with each member of Congress."

Since the anthrax scare that followed the 9-11 attacks, all incoming mail to Congress is delayed anywhere from four to six weeks while it is screened. This means using normal US Mail is no longer an effective method of letting Congress hear your voice. While e-mail is convenient, it is not effective, due to the large volume of e-mail that each Congressional office receives.

"To ensure that ARRL members' letters are quickly and expediently received by Congress, our strategy is to ask ARRL members send their letters directly to Chwat & Co," said Henderson. "Chwat's staff will sort the letters by Congressional district and hand-deliver them to the appropriate House offices, providing a direct point of contact with the Congressman and their staff. This personal contact gives us the chance to provide not only letters from constituents, but information from the ARRL on why this legislation is important."

The ARRL has provided a sample letter for League members to personalize and send to their Congressional representative.

For more information on the Act and the sample letter, go to:

Town of North Hempstead to Recognize Nassau County Hams!!!

As a result of an extraordinary effort made by Dave Kass, WA2LKJ, a proclamation will be issued by the Town of North Hempstead to honor Nassau County Hams in recognition of Field Day and the role Amateur Radio plays during emergencies.

The presentation will occur on Tuesday June 23rd at 7:00 pm in the North Hempstead Town Hall, 220 Plandome Road, Manhasset. We are asking for as many "hams" as possible to attend in support. The Town will be sending out press releases and assisting in obtaining coverage from the media.

Please attend to show your support.

Stuyvesant HS ARC Back on the Air!

1

The Stuyvesant High School Amateur Radio Club was on the air for the first time in nearly a decade on June 5, 2009! W2CLE, one of the oldest club callsigns still in existence, was reactivated as an effort spearheaded by Lew Malchik, N2RQ, long-time advocate of Amateur Radio in Education, came to fuition.

Assisted by Mike Lisenco N2YBB, ARRL Section Manager for New York City/Long Island and Alan Fremmer KB2HEI, a Stuyvesant alumnus from the 1950's, the trio used some VHF/UHF equipment, a TNC and a laptop computer, to provide a demonstration of Amateur Radio to faculty members Dr. Neil Wang, Mr. Scott Thomas, and a group of current Stuyvesant students.

Also discovered during set-up was equipment left from the last iteration of the radio club. An HF/VHF multiband vertical was found on the roof floor in disrepair, removed from the parapet and left behind when the High School was used as an operations center during the aftermath of the World Trade Center attack.

The demonstration consisted of some ARRL videos Lew brought along with Echolink, Winlink-2000, APRS, and FM repeater operations. Using Winlink, emails were sent by Lew to some of the students' cell phones, and they were able to reply. On APRS, we were able to show our location on a map of the region, as well as many other stations in the surrounding area. The students were able to talk to a number of commuters in Westchester, Nassau and Suffolk Counties using the W2VL repeater at the Nassau-Queens border with a 5 watt hand-held.

On Echolink, we connected to a repeater in France and called CQ in English. Hearing no response, I coached one of the students who spoke fluent French to call CQ. He was rewarded with an immediate response. After several minutes, the French station asked to sign off to go to bed as it was nearly midnight in France.

I presented the fledgling club with a new ARRL Handbook and also provided several ARRL informational publications as well as a number of world callsign maps provided by Yaesu.

We left Dr. Wang with information about getting started in ham radio and DVD copies of all the files that I brought which included those we showed and several that we did not get to and a copy of the club station license.

If you are an alumnus of Stuyvesant High School, especially if you were a member of their currently defunct Radio Club, please contact Lew to help. Email him at N2RQ@arrl.net.

Hudson Division Awards Deadline set - Nominations, please!  Due July 6, 2009

Award Applications for the 2009 ARRL Hudson Division Awards Nominations are now being accepted. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to nominate that special someone who has contributed so much to the world of Amateur Radio. The ARRL Hudson Division grants three Awards each year to some very deserving Hams, in three categories: Technical Achievement, Grand Ole Ham and Amateur of the Year.

Last year there were over twenty nominations for the three awards. We are asking you to make submissions for this years' awards, by taking time to fill out the award nominations forms, include any supporting documentation that bests represents the candidate and write a few paragraphs describing why you think they deserve the award.  If you nominee was not chosen last year, please do not be discouraged; file
again.  Have others in your organization write up a nomination as well. Please be very specific as to why the person you are nominating should get the award.  List the accomplishments, achievements, activities, and or other awards the individual has received which would convince the committee members that this is the best person to select for the award.

Keep in mind that the selection committee, composed of assistant directors from all three sections, probably does not know the individual you are nominating.  It is your responsibility to make them aware of the many details of the individual's career in amateur radio.

Please visit the Hudson Division Website to view photos from previous year's events.  I think you'll agree, everyone had a great time! I certainly hope we can repeat that again this year.

The Awards Luncheon sponsored again this year by the Metroplex ARC will be held Sunday, November 8th at 12 noon at Biagio's in Paramus, New Jersey.  Please plan to attend.

Forms are available in both PDF and Word: http://www.hudson.arrl.org/pages/awardsdinner2009.htm
