Welcome!  This is the July edition of the NY City / Long Island
"ehappenings" Section newsletter!  This newsletter is here to serve
the Amateur Radio community in our area.  I welcome and
encourage all submissions.  Please help make this your newsletter!
I especially encourage officers of the area's Amateur Radio clubs to
submit their meeting announcements, guest speakers and special
events.

the other members in the section, please contact me before July 12.

HAPPENINGS

New York Antenna Bill now in Assembly and Senate Rules
Committees - As of this writing, Hudson Division Director Frank
Fallon, N2FF, reports the bill has made it to both the Assembly and
Senate Rules Committees. This is the last step prior to being
released to the floor for a vote.  The purpose of the bill is to
incorporate the essence of the limited federal preemption known as
PRB-1 into NY state law. We now need your help in asking the
Senate and Assembly leadership to move the bill for a vote. Please
immediately telephone, and e-mail the following legislators asking
them to please bring these bills - A.1565 and S.2893 - to the floor
for a vote:

Senator Joe Bruno - Senate Rules Committee
Majority Leader
Telephone - 518-455-3191
E-mail - bruno@senate.state.ny.us

Assemblyman - Sheldon Silver
Chairman Assembly Rules Committee
Telephone - 518-455-3791
E-mail - speaker@assembly.state.ny.us

Our message to them: "Please bring these bills - A.1565 and S.2893
- to the floor so New York State Amateur Radio operators can
continue to serve their communities, at no cost to the state, in times
of communication emergencies like those now taking place during
the Texas and Louisiana floods."  More information is available on
the ARRL Hudson Division website: http://www.arrlhudson.org

ARRL Field Day - Field Day was held the weekend of  June 22, 23
and 24, 2001.  Many clubs had Field Day sites and most were
visited by one or more members of the NLI Section Staff.  My
schedule took me to the Kings County Radio Club in Brooklyn,
Hall of Science Amateur Radio Club in Queens, Nassau Amateur
Radio Club in East Meadow, Wantagh Amateur Radio Club in
Wantagh, Long Island Mobile Amateur Radio Club in North
Bellmore, Larkfield Amateur Radio Club in Huntington, American
Red Cross Emergency Communications Communications Service in
Eatons Neck, Order of Boiled Owls Contest Club in Lloyds Neck
and Great South Bay Amateur Radio Club in North Lindenhurst.
Thank you to each of these clubs, their officers and members for
your hospitality.  There were many displays of Amateur Radio
ingenuity.  Many clubs attempted satellite contacts.  I was lucky
enough to be present at Larkfield when the International Space
Station passed overhead and was able to hear Astronaut Susan
Helms, KC7NHZ, 40 DB over S9, working Field Day!  I also saw
displays of APRS, SSTV, PSK-31 and other exotic modes at many
sites.  Although each club did Field Day differently, everyone I saw
appeared to be having a good time and accomplishing the
emergency preparedness that exemplifies ham radio on Field Day.
Congratulations to all for a great Field Day!  I would like to also
thank my Section Staff for visiting the different club sites.  Rob
Todaro N1XL (Assistant Section Manager & Official Observer
Coordinator), George Gluck WA2WKV (District Emergency
Coordinator Nassau County) and Sid Wolin K2LJH (Technical
Coordinator) joined with me for all or part of my travels.

Sad News - Andrew Borrok N2TZX became a silent key just after
Field Day.  "Andy" was a vibrant leader in the Amateur Radio
community.  He was an ARRL Hudson Division Assistant Director,
Past President of the Hall of Science Amateur Radio Club, ARRL
Emergency Coordinator for Queens County and an active ham.
Andy always was a pleasant person to be around with a good sense
of humor.  He will be missed.

More Sad News - John Fredericksen KA2YMR suffered a heart
attack after Field Day and is in extremely grave condition. John was
a former LIMARC President and ARRL Assistant Director. John
was living in New Jersey at the time and had attended a Field Day
there.  John always said that "Field Day is the most fun you can
have in Amateur Radio".  Our thoughts and prayers go out to John
and his family at this time.

IARU HF Worldchampionship Contest - Members of the Order of
Boiled Owls Contest Club will be operating NU1AW as the official
headquarters station of the International Amateur Radio Union on
July 14 and 15.  Operation will be on 10 through 160 meters on
both SSB and CW.  Contact with NU1AW will be counted as a
special HQ station multiplier.  Operation will be from Readsboro,
Vermont at the stations of K2LE and W2AX.  Some of the NLI
section staff and ARRL Hudson Division cabinet who are members
of the Owls and participating in this operation include Public
Information Coordinator Diane Ortiz K2DO, NLI Section Manager
George Tranos N2GA, Hudson Division Director Frank Fallon
N2FF and Assistant Director Mel Granick KS2G. QSL NU1AW
via ARRL HQ in Newington, CT, with an SASE.
