Congratulations to all of the clubs and individuals who set up Field Day stations! The airwaves were busy with stations on many different bands and modes. Some hams got to experience their very first Field Day and hopefully came away impressed! For the seventh straight year, I had a chance to tour some of the section's Field Day sites and always enjoy the hospitality shown me and the rest of the ARRL section staff. Joining me this year was my Assistant Section Manager and Section Emergency Coordinator, Tom Carrubba KA2D. Tom and I got a chance to see 9 different sites. We are impressed with your dedication and commitment to Amateur Radio! We also feel secure in the knowledge that you can set up and operate under less than ideal conditions in an emergency preparedness exercise! There was some real innovation and good ham ingenuity on display. Congratulations! My apologies if we missed your site this year - hopefully we'll visit you next year! For an overall view of section Field Day sites, see http://www.arrl.org/sections/?sect=NLI * Hudson Division Awards dinner November 13th The 2004 Hudson Division Awards Nomination are closed. Selection is now underway for the three awards: Grand Ole' Ham, Amateur of the Year and Technical Achievement. The award winners will be announced later this year with the awards dinner being held in the fall. Thanks to anyone who submitted nominations. The Hudson Division Awards Dinner has been scheduled for Saturday, November 13, 2004 at 7pm.لل Contact Joyce Birmingham, KA2ANF, ARRL Vice Director, Hudson Division at ka2anf@aol.com for more information. * LIMARC inaugurates new computer net on its repeater On Wednesday, Junr 16, the Long Island Mobile Amateur Radio Club held the first Computer Net on its W2VL repeater on 146.850 MHz. This net will meet every Wendsday at 9 PM, unless otherwise noted. Topics discussed will be Computers, hence the name of the net. Everything from Ham Radio Computer use to the latest and greatest computing technology will be discussed. Feel free to check in and by all means tell everyone about it. Net control for the time being will be myself, Steve KC2GOG, Andy KC2MKJ and/or Jason KC2MKK. Hope to hear from you on the net. Submitted by Steve KC2GOG. Contact Steve at kc2gog@limarc.org * From Daniel Reisman NY2L, Official Observer Coordinator To: all club Presidents and repeater owners: Within the NYC/LI section over the past couple of months we have had increased jamming/illegal activity. To help facilitate the finding, eventual capture and building of a case toward prosecution of illegal activity, I am asking for each club or repeater owner within our section, who has a RDF Team and/or Group, to designate one person from that group as a team-leader and have them contact me. This person must have experience in RDFing and must be trustworthy because of the sensitive information he/she will be handling. Each team leader must have a list of those members within his/her group. Those members must be broken down into Base Monitoring Stations, and Mobile Monitoring Stations (having Doppler gear). The Base monitoring stations should also be broken down into 2 groups. Group one being those with Vertical antennas on their house and those with Directional Beams (and the band they are capable in using these antennas on). If your club or repeater group does not have a RDF team, this might be a good time to start thinking about forming one! My goal is to build a network, using E-mail reflectors, Text Messaging, Instant Messaging and phone numbers to move information regarding illegal activity to better find and capture a Jammer. Your help in this would be greatly appreciated. If a network can be built within our section to pass information efficiently, time in which it takes to get a Jammer off the air will decrease dramatically. Further more, this network could have advantages in times of emergency. If you have any questions or if you are designated as team leader for your club/repeater group, please feel free to send me an e-mail at NY2L@arrl.net (please put in the subject line [NYC/LI Section]). * From Diane Ortiz K2DO, Public Information Coordinator Congratulations to all the clubs and individuals who made Field Day in the NLI Section a great success! Many hams took the opportunity to visit many different Field Days this year. Reports I heard were all positive, with many setups including different modes, unusual antennas and lots of participation. It's not too late to get some publicity for your Field Day event. Local publications, especially weeklies, are always looking for stories that involve the surrounding community. All it takes it a good-quality photo and a "blurb". It can be a few sentences or 500 words. Just make sure that all the folks in the photo are identified (name and town) and don't use ham radio acronyms. Spell everything out in plain language. Need help? Check out http://www.arrl.org/pio or contact me at K2DO@arrl.org 73, Diane Ortiz K2DO, ARRL NYC/LI Section Public Information Coordinator K2DO@arrl.org * From Tom Carrubba KA2D, Section Emergency Coordinator New York City District - DEC Michael Licenco N2YBB: May was a very active month. New York City ARES has grown once again and we have added up to 20 new Public Service Events to our calendar. The year isn't even half over yet and more events are still coming in. Activity is occurring throughout the five boroughs. We participated in the highly visible "Operation Transit Safe" drill sponsored by the New York City Office of Emergency Management through our relationship with our client Salvation Army SATERN. The drill, which began at 0200 on Sunday morning May 16th, was a simulated terrorist attack on the Bowling Green subway station in lower Manhattan. The emergency response was enormous, with over 1,000 participants. It was a great learning experience for us. Borough activity was up, with ARES events in Brooklyn and Queens. Brooklyn supported the Every Face 5K on the first of the month, Kids Walk for Health on May 16th (as well as providing operators for the OEM drill), the Harbor Fitness 5K run on May 23rd while providing operators for the inter-borough Buckley to Kennedy's run at the same time. Queens provided operators for the other half of the Buckley to Kennedy's run, the OEM drill, and the L'Chaim Run on Memorial Day. Both Manhattan and the Bronx provided operators for the OEM Operation Transit Safe drill. June promises to be an even busier month, with events and drills planned for the group. Joe Nieves N2TEE; EC Richmond County No additional comments Charles Gallo KC2IXE; EC Queens County No additional comments Chris Sierra KC2KFW; EC Bronx No additional comments Adam Fine AB2IZ, EC Kings County Every Face 5K - 05/01/04 This was a first time event for Kings County ARES that was held in Prospect Park, Brooklyn. Nine members participated in this event even though it was obtained at the last minute. These included: AB2IZ, KB2VDV, KC2CBL, KC2EDR, KC2EKE, KC2JOX, KC2JXM, N2ECR and WA2JNF. Over 30 hours of communications were provided for this event and we have already been asked to save the date for next year's event. Operation "Transit Safe" - 05/16/04 WA2JNF was the sole Kings County ARES participant in this Citywide Drill with OEM. Much media attention was paid to this drill and our DEC, N2YBB and WA2JNF made it into some evening newscasts with their ARES apparel highly visible. Kids Walk for Health - 05/16/04 As another first time event for Kings County ARES, fourteen operators provided over 30 hours of communications. This event also took place near Prospect Park but also encompassed the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, the Prospect Park Zoo and Prospect Park itself. Thanks go to AB2IZ, KB2SUR, KB2VDV, KC2CBL, KC2EDR, KC2EKE, KC2HMS, KC2IDY, KC2JOX, KC2JXM, N2ECR, N2RGA, WA2JNF and WA3YRE. Harbor Fitness 5K - 05/23/04 In a third first time event for the month and also part of a doubleheader Sunday, eight operators participated and provided over 20 hours of communications. This run took place in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn along beautiful Shore Parkway. Participants included AB2IZ, K2RMX, KC2EDR, KC2EKE, KC2IDY, KC2JOX, KC2MGY and W2DEA. Buckley's to Kennedy's Run - 05/23/04 Event two was the first District event of the year. Twenty-one operators from three of the five boroughs participated in this event that stretched from Marine Park, Brooklyn, over the Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge, into Riis Park in the Rockaways. Over 100 hours of communications were provided by this group that included: K2RDG, KB2SUR, KB2VDV, KC2CBL, KC2HMS, KC2JXM, N2ECR, N2RGA, W2MPL, WA2JNF and WA3YRE from Brooklyn, N2TAW from Manhattan and K2ZIR, KB2QLE, KC2IXE, KC2JKD, KC2MMI, KC2MPU, N2UJG, WA2EQH and WA2GUG. Kings County ARES meeting - 05/19/04 Topics discussed: Improving station and personal capabilities; Submitting a PSHR; Debriefing on Every Face 5K; Harbor Fitness 5K; Buckley's to Kennedy's Run; Other upcoming events. In attendance: AB2IZ, K2MAK, K2RMX, KA2KDQ, KB2SUR, KB2VDV, KC2CBL, KC2EDR, KC2HMS, KC2JOX, KC2JXM, KC2MGY, N2ECR, N2RGA, W2DEA, W2MPL, WA2JNF and WB2AAP. Kings County ARES has a weekly net, every Sunday at 8PM. We meet on the W2CMA repeater (446.675/-5MHz/114.8) in order to discuss issues of relevance to the ARES community at large and Kings County ARES specifically. We welcome, encourage and invite all amateur radio operators to participate. Kings County ARES has a new domain name. We can be found on the web at www.kingscountyares.org. Thanks to Mitch (N2RGA) for all the hard work he puts into the site on an almost daily basis. I would like to also note a correction to a previous report. During our Citywide drill with the GNY American Red Cross, held on March 6th, 2004, a mistakenly omitted a participant from that event. Herb (KC2CBL) provided 3 hours of public service during that drill. I would also like to give special mention to two members of Kings County ARES that have gone 'above and beyond'. Laura (KB2VDV) has been instrumental in tracking down events for us to participate in here in Kings County. Also, Peter (KC2EDR) has been bringing more and more people to meeting not only in Kings County, but in the other boroughs as well. A well deserved congratulations to both of them. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, June 16th, 2004 at 7:30pm. The location is UCP 121 Lawrence Street, between Ocean Parkway and Seton Place Brooklyn, NY.
