HAPPENINGS
* From George Tranos N2GA, Section Manager
July is here and with it, the onset of the summer season and hot weather. June was
an eventful month, with field day and the end of month rain storms and flooding. We
in southern New York were lucky as our neighbors to the west in New Jersey and
Pennsylvania and in upstate New York were hit hard with river flooding. I crossed
the Delaware Water Gap on Thursday, June 29th, and saw houses and cars underwater!
Trees seemed to be growing straight out of the river. People were evacuated, lives
disrupted and businesses ruined. Shelters were set up, ARES and RACES were activated
and hams were dispatched to aid in emergency communications.
Don't think that this cannot happen here! People become complacent after months and
years without a major storm. Hurricanes can and do happen and New York and Long
Island are very vulnerable to them. Heed the warning as we go further into Hurricane
season by being prepared with your go-kits and emergency plans. Join your local ARES
group if you're not a member and
go out and train to be a communicator in times of need. Your local ARES Emergency
Coordinator would welcome your involvement and would be happy to help you get more
prepared. Just shoot them a quick email or phone call. If you don't know
who they are, please contact me or our Section Emergency Coordinator Tom Carrubba KA2D to
find out. We can be
reached at our-call at ARRL.net (n2ga@arrl.net or ka2d@arrl.net).
Field Day has come and gone - I can't believe it's over already! While it wasn't the
best weekend weather-wise, it was a great test of emergency preparedness. Adverse
conditions test the mettle of newcomers and seasoned veterans alike. I hope you were
able to participate in some way.
I spent sometime with Diane Ortiz K2DO and Mel Granick KS2G touring the various Field Day
sites. We started out early Saturday at Great South Bay ARC in North
Babylon and were happy to see over 20 members setting up in the rain. GSBARC President Jay
N2PIK and Field Day chairman Ken N2ZN along with TOBARES President Walter KA2RGI welcomed
us and showed
us around. GSBARC ran 6F using callsign W2GSB. We next tried to visit Suffolk
County Radio Club but they were not at their site in East Islip. We continued east
to Riverhead and the David Sarnoff Preserve (an appropriate place for a radio site) but
couldn't find the Radio Central ARC. Later on, we were told that they had set up at
a different entrance to the preserve. Undeterred, we continued east to Southold
where we found the Peconic ARC setting up at Horton's Point lighthouse. Don N2QHV
and Warren WM2Z welcomed us and showed us around. We found a couple of other NLI
Assistant Section Managers here as well - Len W2FX and John KB2SCS.
Ken WB2AMU was setting up his 6-meter station. Peconic ran 2A using callsign W2AMC.
Heading back west, we stopped at the home of Ted K2QMF in Baiting Hollow. Ted and
his son Dave were using Dave's AA2DC callsign to run 2D. Ted, Diane, Mel and I are
all members of the Order of Boiled Owls contest club, that unfortunately this year decided
not to run a Field Day
operation. Our visit to Ted's was a nice substitute for an Owl's site visit.
We made our way to the 147.575 Long Island Amateur Radio Simplex Club at the RCA site on
Whiskey Road in Rocky Point. Frank WA2LIR welcomed us and showed us around.
LIARS was running 2A using W2LIS on HF and 6 meters. 6 meter guru Frank AA2DR was
making SSB contacts with the west coast during the first hour of Field Day. We also
met with Bob Lundquist
KA2KDB, the last chief engineer at the RCA site. He was last there in 1978 as an RCA
employee and it was fun listening to his stories about what the site was like when RCA
ruled the radio waves. We then continued west to visit the Larkfield ARC at their
site in West Hills Park in Huntington. Larkfield President Ed KC2E showed us around
their nice 2A operation using callsign W2LRC. Charlie K2HTX was cranking out the CW
contacts and was also Larkfield Field Day chairman.
Our next stop was the Grumman ARC set up at the old Grumman runway in Bethpage. Grumman
President Pat KE2LJ welcomed us and showed us their impressive 3A operation. Two
40-meter antennas, a "bazooka" and a sloper, were utilized along with a full
size 80 meter dipole. Ed K2MFY was plugging away on the CW key as we visited.
Onward to the Nassau ARC in Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, we met up with Lance KA2EJD
and Mike WY2U. They were running 3A using K2VN on SSB, CW and VHF.
Multi-element arrays for 15/20/80 and a 40 meter wire Yagi were used. For logging,
they had N3FJP logger.
Heading south, we found ourselves at LIMARC at the Rosemary Kennedy BOCES center in
Wantagh. LIMARC chairman Don WB2BEZ and club President Rick K2RB welcomed us
andescorted us around. LIMARC used W2VL and ran 2A. It was here that KS2G ran
off a bunch of20 meter SSB QSO's and I had a chance at the key on 20 and 40 meter CW.
Our last stop for the day was over at the Wantagh ARC at Wantagh Park off Merrick Road.
Frank N2RSO showed us around their 2A operation. W2VA was the callsign. They
were set up in a good location for visibility, just passed the entrance to the park!
Nice work guys!
The rain prevented us from visiting more clubs this year and put a damper on many of the
festivities. However, good old ham radio ingenuity seemed to be in ample supply!
Many new "waterfront" field day locations were utilized, even if
unintentionally! Tents and stations were moved after flooding made the site
unusable. This was truly a good test of our preparedness and
flexibility and gave NY City / Long Island radio amateurs a chance to show their stuff.
"When all else fails" - ham radio's motto - appears to be more than just
a slogan!
On Sunday, I got a chance to make about 50 contacts on CW from home as N2GA with my 1D
setup. This was fun and I was able to add a few points with a contact to some local
stations as well. Congratulations to each of you that participated in this year's
Field Day!
73, George

A caveat: This is NOT indicative of the total digital NTS activity within the
Section, as I'm still not successful in capturing total activity. We're still
greatful for Nick N2QZ/STM for ENY and Dave WB2FTX/STM for NNJ who are assisting in taking
Tom N2LTC's digital NTS traffic while
he recovers from an illness. Typically I'm liaison for NLI's HF Pactor, but don't
have a good path to Dave's station, so thanks to Nick for taking this and Alec N2XOJ for
bringing that down as well from SDN. We wish Tom the best for a speedy recovery! If
there are other stations in the Section using digital means to send messages, let me know
or if you questions about this, please contact me: w2dsx@arrl.net

The ARES E-Letter to debut (Aug 11, 2005) -- Licensed League
members with ARRL Field Organization appointments involving
emergency communication or public service will be the first
to receive the debut issue of The ARES E-Letter! The premier
edition of the monthly national newsletter is set for
release Wednesday, August 17, and will publish on the third
Wednesday of each month after that. Since 9/11, interest
within the Amateur Radio community in emergency
communication and public service has greatly increased. More
than ever, hams are volunteering to help meet the
communication needs of our nation, states and communities.
The ARES E-Letter is a response to this expanding awareness.
Anyone with an interest in emergency communication or public
service activities can sign up online to receive The ARES
E-Letter. Each issue will contain a wealth of after-action
reports, editorials, technical tips, news and
views--information you'd otherwise have to wait for in QST.
Timeliness, utility and inspiration are the goals of this
informative publication that's devoted entirely to Amateur
Radio emergency communication and public service. Editing
the first issue is former long-time ARRL Headquarters staff
member Rick Palm, K1CE, who oversaw activities involving

- K2LS DX-Packetcluster node available for DX spots
The K2LS DX-Packetcluster node, located in Merrick, NY,
is available on both RF and the internet. RF input/output 144.970.
Internet (Telnet) is DXC.K2LS.COM, either standard port 23, or
port 7300. The K2LS node is filtered to pass only spots from
zones 1 thru 8, but, I can allow any combination of spots/bands to
be passed at the users request. Some users connect simultaneously
with a different ssid, i.e. KA2D & KA2D-3, enabling them to see
both filtered and unfiltered information. The node also filters all
talk/chat from outside zones 1 thru 8. For more information,
contact Larry Strasser K2LS at k2ls@optonline.net
- Long Island Transmitter Hunters seeking new participants
We have a newly reorganized Hidden Transmitter Hunters group
active and seeking new participants. LITHARC (Long Island

Groups list under LITHARC. All apps are approved for membership
and we are using the yahoo group as a central information and
communications site. Anyone interested in learning more about the
activity of radio direction finding and radio "fox hunting" is invited
to join the group. Of course the real fun is joining the group on an
upcoming hunt. There is always room for more so grab your HT
and come on down to a hunt! For more information, contact
