Field Day 2009
After weeks of inclement weather, and the threat of more, Field Day weekend got
off to an iffy start. After some brief pockets of rain around the Section, we
lucked out and were blessed with great weather for the event. Various members of
Section staff visited most of the Field Day locations. I put 100 miles on the
odometer as I visited 5 sites throughout New York City. I had a great time
meeting a lot of hams and got to operate at a couple of locations.
Field day is the premiere operating event of the year for most clubs. ASM for
Suffolk County Len Battista W2FX visited 9 clubs operating at 7 locations
throughout the County. He too spent a good deal of time operating on the air.
Section Emergency Coordinator Jim Mezey, W2KFV, visited 6 of the clubs in Nassau
County and Suffolk Counties and Technical Coordinator Steve Barreres, K2CX also
got into both Nassau and Suffolk Counties to visit a number of clubs.
Only a few of the clubs got some extra points by sending me a message through
the National Traffic System (NTS). I don’t know why more didn’t. And some of the
clubs had local elected officials show up as well (gaining them some additional
points, too). In fact, at the Northeast Wireless Radio Club in Bayside, Queens,
New York City Council Member Tony Avella not only came to the site at Fort
Totten but operated on the air as well. And then he issued his own Press Release
to all New York City media detailing the event, which will be posted on the NLI
website along with a photo.
As per usual with the good weather, a lot of food, and a collegial group of
amateur operators, a fun time was had by all. I took a number of photos and will
be putting them up on the NLI website.
If you would like some photos of your event included, please email them to me at
a reduced size and I will have them included on the website. Captions would help
and a listing of who is in the photo would be nice as well.
For those of you who have already sent me photos I ask you to be patient. I
cannot send them out through the e-Happenings newsletter as this can only be
sent through the League as a text file. I will be posting everything online on
the NLI website shortly.

Nassau County Executive Suozzi Honors Amateur Radio
Proclaims “Amateur Radio Week”
On June 25, 2009 Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi proclaimed June 27th
to June 28th 2009 to be Amateur Radio Week in Nassau County. In doing so he
recognized the “countless hours of community service throughout the decades”
that Amateur radio provides to the community. He further states that Amateur
Radio has consistently proven “its undisputed relevance in the modern world in
providing vital communications in major emergencies” when all else have failed.
In his proclamation, County Executive Suozzi paid tribute to the hams of Nassau
County and to the American Radio Relay League.
I want to congratulate the hams in Nassau County for getting the recognition
they deserve and would like to thank Dave Kass, WA2LKJ, for his hard work and
determination in getting the Proclamation issued.
------
This leads me to the next item.
A proclamation was issued by the Town of North Hempstead to honor Dave Kass,
WA2LKJ in his role as ARES Emergency Coordinator for the Township and to Nassau
County Hams in general in recognition of both Field Day and of the role Amateur
Radio plays during emergencies.
The presentation occurred on Tuesday June 23rd at 7:00 pm in the North Hempstead
Town Hall. We had a great turnout and the Town sent out press releases to all
local media with photographs of the event.
Once again congratulations to Dave and to all the Nassau County hams involved in
EmComm.
------
My dance card is empty for the month of July. I am scheduled to be at the
Peconic ARC meeting in August. If you would like me to attend an upcoming
meeting of your club, please email me at
n2ybb@arrl.org and I'll be more than happy to set it up.

AGAIN, THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!
PLEASE READ AND FOLLOW-UP WITH A LETTER!!!
ARRL Seeks Member Support for HR 2160
To support HR 2160 -- The Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Enhancement Act
of 2009 -- the ARRL is asking its membership to contact their members of the US
House of Representatives with a request to become co-sponsors of this
significant piece of legislation.
"Getting a bill successfully through Congress is a formidable task -- one that
is going to require the involvement of every ARRL member," said ARRL Regulatory
Information Manager Dan Henderson, N1ND. "Working with our Washington consulting
firm Chwat & Co, we are laying a dynamic approach that will allow us to make our
case most effectively. We have developed a strategy to maximize our impact when
dealing with each member of Congress."
Since the anthrax scare that followed the 9-11 attacks, all incoming mail to
Congress is delayed anywhere from four to six weeks while it is screened. This
means using normal US Mail is no longer an effective method of letting Congress
hear your voice. While e-mail is convenient, it is not effective, due to the
large volume of e-mail that each Congressional office receives.
"To ensure that ARRL members' letters are quickly and expediently received by
Congress, our strategy is to ask ARRL members send their letters directly to
Chwat & Co," said Henderson. "Chwat's staff will sort the letters by
Congressional district and hand-deliver them to the appropriate House offices,
providing a direct point of contact with the Congressman and their staff. This
personal contact gives us the chance to provide not only letters from
constituents, but information from the ARRL on why this legislation is
important."
The ARRL has provided a sample letter for League members to personalize and send
to their Congressional representative.
For more information on the Act and the sample letter, go to:

********************************************************************
From Jim Mezey W2FKV, ARES Section Emergency Coordinator
Greetings:
I hope everyone has recovered from the "High Holy Day of Ham Radio", Field Day.
I also hope everyone enjoyed themselves and put their skills to work for one of
the local clubs. I visited 6 Field Day sites (LIMARC, Nassau, Wantagh, Nassau
County Police, Grumman, GSBARC) and was impressed with them all. Congratulations
to each and every club. I am always amazed at the inventiveness of amateur radio
operators, especially KC2FBW (Wantagh ARC) and his homebrew antenna lift. (See
pictures elsewhere). He used a self contained water hydraulic system to raise
and lower a beam on a ladder. This was all constructed of home made parts
including the trailer. I was also very impressed with the GSBARC set up on the
grounds of the Town of Babylon. They had a very impressive antenna setup for
their 7 Alpha station. Great job!
I hope to get out to visit more sites next year. The clubs I visited did an
outstanding job to promote amateur radio to the public and the venues couldn't
have been figured out any better. Congratulations to everyone.
NYC: no report
Nassau: no report
Suffolk:
Town of Huntington; EC John Allocca reports a routine month.
Town of Southold; EC, Don Fisher reports they supported the Suffolk County
Bike-Boat-Bike event on June 7. Operators from Peconic ARC, East Hampton,
Riverhead, and Brookhaven ARES made this a successful event. Using 4 repeaters
linked via VoIP provided clear communication coverage through the eastern end of
Suffolk County. Operators participating were:
N2QHV, K2GLP, AB2WW, KC2LIN, N2RBU, W2EUL and N2IGT.
Fourteen members of Southold ARES also took part in the Shelter Island 10K Race
on June 20, 2009 with the assist of Staten Island Amateur Radio Association
providing a mobile command center. Operators participating were: NX2O, W2RB,
N2QHV, N2QZA, K2GLP, N2IN, W2RT, NA2V, N2RBU, KB2SCS, WA2JPJ, W2EUL, KC2KJX, and
WM2Z .
Peconic Amateur Radio Club with 30 members (24 ARES) participated in Field Day
from Horton's Point Lighthouse Park. Operating 3 Alpha under ARES members
participating were: KB2YSM, K1IMD, W2NSF, K2CX, W2FX, WA2JPJ, KB2SCS, K2GLP,
K2OVS, W2TNI, N2QHV, KC2PYN, KC2KJX, N2RBU, KC2NEX, N2MY, KC2CYC, WM2Z, K2LGO,
AB2UZ, KN2Y, W2EUL, KC2LRP and KC2PYO.
I know that summer is a busy time and with Field Day the days go by so quickly.
But being prepared for the unexpected is something we all should consider. Check
your gear, is it complete? Are you ready for possible deployment and be a help
to your community? As the weather gets warmer so does the threat of major
thunderstorms and possible hurricanes. These can devastate property real quickly
and knockout power lines and create major communication issues. Will you be able
to help if the need arises??? Please recheck your "Go Bags" and make sure
everything you need is there. Don't take repeaters for granted. They may not be
operational. Can you put up that portable antenna so you can communicate?
Take care of your family first. Do you have enough water and food supply to last
for at least a week to ten days? Just some points to ponder as we get into
Hurricane season.
I hope to get more reports from the DEC's and/or EC's in the future as required
by the ARRL. So they can be properly forwarded.
Remember - keep your batteries charged.....

Jim Mezey, W2KFV
