August 2002 |
Welcome! This is the August edition of the NY City / Long Island
"ehappenings" Section newsletter! This newsletter is here to serve
the Amateur Radio community in our area. I welcome and
encourage all submissions. Please help make this your newsletter!
I especially encourage officers of the area's Amateur Radio clubs to
submit their meeting announcements, guest speakers and special
events. Please submit any information for the September issue prior
to the end of August.
QST Section News
The QST Section News column for October 2002 is due on August
12. If you or your club has anything which you feel is of interest to
the other members in the section, please contact me before August 12.
As stated in my previous bulletin, the Section News column in QST
will be discontinued in January 2003. The ARRL Board of Directors
voted at their July 2002 meeting to discontinue the printed version
of section news. Each section now has a site on the world-wide-web
to replicate section news. See the NLI site at:
http://www.arrl.org/sections/?sect=NLI
HAPPENINGS
Field Day in June a success. Field Day information was distributed
as a special bulletin in June. The NLI Section staff was able to
visit quite a few Field Day sites. I'd like to express my thanks
to each staff member who took time to visit a Field Day site.
I had the opportunity to visit with LIMARC, Wantagh ARC,
Great South Bay ARC, Nassau ARC, Larkfield ARC, American
Red Cross Emergency Communications Service, and the Order
of Boiled Owls Contest club. Thank you all for your great
hospitality! Many clubs had a "Get On The Air" station and
there seemed to be much enthusiasm for it. It was nice to see
so many youngsters, newcomers and old-timers alike helping
out. Congratulations to each of you who participated in Field
Day 2002.
Your help still needed on NY State PRB-1 bill. The NY State
legislature will adjourn soon. The bill has passed the Senate.
We still need your help to write Assembly Speaker Silver to ask
his support of A1565, the NY State PRB-1 bill. Please write
Assemblyman Sheldon Silver, LOB 932, Albany, NY 12248.
Telephone 518-455-3791 and fax 518-455-5459. E-mail him

We are in the middle of the Atlantic Hurricane Season. As we all
know, hurricanes, tropical storms, and the flood waters that often
accompany them can affect a very large portion of the country and
beyond. Be alert for Hurricane watches and warnings, have plenty
of spare batteries available and be prepared to operate on emergency
power. Tune in to your local ARES or SKYWARN nets.
