HAPPENINGS

Virginia "Jean" Chittenden WA2BGE, sk
Jean Chittenden WA2BGE, a long-time LIMARC honorary member,
passed away July 22. Jean was living in Oneonta, NY and was
in the late stages of cancer the last few years. She resided on LI for
63 years before moving to Oneonta. Jeanne was very active in
LIMARC in the '70s and '80s and also held office in many YL
organizations including the YLRL Young Ladies Radio League)
and SAYLARC (Second Area YL Amateur Radio Club). She is
survived by sons, Theodore (Gloria) LeViness of Hicksville, LI;
also, Leslie LeViness of Oneonta; three grandchildren; two great
grandsons. She was predeceased by her husbands Theodore
LeViness and Mainard L. Chittenden.  Mrs. Chittenden had worked
for Pan American Airways Flight Service and in the Long Island
Public School system until retirement in 1971. She was a past
regent in the Oyster Bay Daughter's of The American Revolution,
a past matron of the Eastern Star in Hicksville, L.I., and an amateur
radio operator since 1975, with extra class privileges. In that capacity,
she accompanied two other amateur radio operators to Mainland
China in 1980, to urge the government to permit their operators to
return to worldwide radio privileges. They had been off the air for
40 years at that time. China was "on the air" 15 months later.

ARRL re-soliciting 2003 McGan Award nominations
During its July meeting, the ARRL Board of Directors voted to
re-solicit nominations for the 2003 Philip J. McGan Memorial
Silver Antenna Award. The ARRL Public Relations Committee
has determined that none of the nominations submitted for this
year's award adequately fit the award criteria. "All three nominees
have achieved notable success in the area of public service,"
Committee Chairman Jeff Reinhardt, AA6JR, said, "but the
committee did not feel that the nominations reflected the
important volunteer public relations efforts for which the award
is given." Public relations involves efforts specifically directed at
bringing Amateur Radio to the attention of the general public and
the news media in a positive light. Nomination forms are available
on the ARRL Web site. Return completed entry forms and
supporting materials to Philip J. McGan Memorial Silver Antenna
Award, c/o Jennifer Hagy, N1TDY, ARRL, 225 Main St,
Newington, CT 06111. Nominations must be received at ARRL
Headquarters by 5 PM Eastern Daylight Time on September 2, 2003.

QST "YL News" Editor Diane Ortiz, K2DO was among the crew
members onboard the Jeanie Johnston, when the tall ship sailed
into New York Harbor July 3.  NYC Fire Department boats were
on hand to send up streams of colored water and many hoots as a
welcome. On hand to meet her were George Tranos N2GA, NLI
Section Manager and Frank Fallon N2FF, Hudson Division Director.
Ortiz, a member and former chairperson of the ARRL Public
Relations Committee, is Public Information Coordinator for the
ARRL New York City-Long Island Section as well as a Public I
nformation Officer. The three-masted, 123-foot (LOA) barque is a
replica of one of the so-called "famine ships" that brought some
3000 Irish immigrants to the US during the 19th century's potato
famine.  Ortiz operated Amateur Radio during the three-day sail
from Bristol, Pennsylvania, to the North Cove Marina off Battery
Park City in lower Manhattan. Ortiz is president of the Long
Island Mobile Amateur Radio Club (LIMARC) in Levittown.
The Jeanie Johnston remained in port at Lower Manhattan until
July 14, when it departed for Port Jefferson on Long Island. For
more information, visit the Jeanie Johnston Web page at
http://www.jeaniejohnston.com/home.asp?id=1    Frank N2FF
along with his wife had visited the Jeanie Johnston in Blennerville,
Co Kerry, Ireland in 1999 while it was being built. Blennerville is
only a few miles from where his wife's parents were born.  Fallon
said, "I have been waiting for five years to see the Jeanie Johnston
in New York.  I never expected to know any of the crew
members; much less the only one of the crew with no Irish
connections and also to have worked that crew member on 40
meter phone at sea.  It's another of those great ham radio stories."
