HAPPENINGS

* Field Day a success
ARRL Field Day weekend was Friday, June 24, through Sunday,
June 26, 2005.  This year, many clubs and individuals throughout
the section operated.  The NLI staff had the occasion to visit a
number of Field Day sites this year and we thank all of those who
welcomed us.  Tom Carrubba KA2D and I visited 11 sites in Nassau
and Suffolk counties.  While time prevented us from visiting all the
sites, we saw a lot of ham radio innovation on display!  It was also
rewarding to see the ham radio tradition of elmering newcomers
into the hobby by showing them and helping them get on the air
during Field Day.  The spirit of comraderie was certainly apparent
for Field Day!  Congratulations to each of you for a job well done
and another terrific Field Day!  Submitted by George Tranos, N2GA.

* HRU 2006 initial planning meeting on Tuesday, August 2
The initial HRU 2006 meeting will be held on Tuesday, August 2,
starting at 7 PM. The meeting will be held at Babylon Town Hall on
Sunrise Highway in North Lindenhurst. It will be held in the
ARES/RACES room in the basement (enter around back and down the
outside staircase).

This is the first of the monthly operational meetings of the
planning committee for Ham Radio University 2006. HRU is a day of
education for and about Amateur Radio. This will be the 7th annual
event! This year, HRU is again being held at Briarcliffe College,
1055 Stewart Avenue, Bethpage, NY, on Sunday, January 8, 2006.
The HRU planning committee jointly decides the format and structure
of the event including what forums are held, what moderators to
invite, the setup, takedown, talkin, publicity, special event
operation and all other aspects of HRU. As always, your help is
solicited. Please feel free to spead the word of this announcement
to the Amateur Radio population in general.
The first meeting is generally an organizational one, with decisions
made about who the chairman of the event will be, when meetings will
take place and an overview of what needs to be done for this year.
The meeting site will be announced shortly. I hope you can make the
meeting and we can again make this year's HRU a success.

* From Tom Carrubba KA2D, Section Emergency Coordinator

New York City District - DEC Michael Lisenco N2YBB:
"This is what ARES is all about:.."
On June 10th, the north shore of Staten Island was hit with
a major blackout.  Hard hit with the power outage was St.
Vincent's Hospital and it's affiliate, Bayley Seton Hospital.
David Lefkowitz (KB2KAB), Staten Island OES received an
on-air call from N2KB, a staffer at St. Vincent's with a
request for assistance from ARES.  They needed to establish
communications throughout the facility which had limited
power from their backup generators.  David picked up the
ball and ran with it. He started to initialize the
activation while Joe, N2TEE (Staten Island EC) was stuck at
work, and Jan, W2KMA (Staten Island AEC) was out in Long
Island for the day.
With the assistance of Carl, WA2IAF, the two were able to
bring relief to the hams who are employees at the hospital
and they were able to maintain the station at St. Vincent's
EOC.  A net was maintained on the NYCRA repeater.
Staten Island ARES has an excellent working relationship
with St. Vincent's.  They recently ran a Technician level
class which culminated in a VE session in which many
hospital employees obtained their license.  The group also
recently participated in a drill with the facility, which
only underscores why the hospital turned to Staten Island
ARES immediately for assistance.
June was also a very busy month with public service events
in 4 of the 5 boroughs.  We started the month with the
National Cancer Day parade in Queens.  This is the second
year that ARES has participated in this event.  The next
day, Brooklyn had the Kenneth Dolan Memorial Run and we
participated in the Israeli Day Parade in Manhattan for the
first time.  Staten Island, not to be outdone, followed the
next two weekends with the Sgt. Doreen Scrimemti Scholarship
Run and the Like M. Parlatore Run.  Brooklyn finished the
month with the Cosme's 5K Run.
During the month I was also pleased to announce the
appointment of Gabe Cuebas, N2PQT, as the new Emergency
Coordinator for the Bronx.  Gabe, who had served as Bronx EC
many years ago, graciously consented to filling a long
standing void in Bronx leadership.
June also saw the reestablishment of RACES in New York City
with the appointment of Mike Lisenco, N2YBB, as the new
RACES City Radio Officer.  This came after the completion of
a Memorandum of Understanding with the New York City Office
of Emergency Management.

John Healy, KA2ABV, EC New York County
We are pleased to announce the appointment of three AEC's
for Manhattan: Richard Grover (W2RAG), Michael Lavin,
KC2FUZ, and Michael Nunez (KC2NCV). Please join us in
congratulating them. I look forward to working with these
individuals in our continuing efforts to improve training
and participation within our borough.
We are currently investigating the possibility of several
events during the coming months and will keep you posted.
Any members who know of events where ARES can be of service
are asked to contact John Healy, EC for Manhattan, at
917-886-0825, or via email at KA2ABV@ARRL.NET .
Our weekly Manhattan ARES Nets (on the BEARS repeater
(147.27) each Tuesday evening beginning at 7:30 PM) are
currently on hiatus.
Next New York County ARES meeting - Thursday, September
15th, 2005 at 6:30pm
Meeting location: San Remo, 146 Central Park West, at 75th
Street. Please note that after a poll of our membership,
Manhattan ARES is holding its meetings on a bi-monthly basis
rather than each month from this point forward. Our schedule
of meetings for the remainder of the year is as follows:
September 15th, and November 17th

Joe Nieves N2TEE; EC Richmond County:
June 11th will find us participating in the Sgt. Doreen
Scrimemti Scholarship Run.  Looking for a good turn-out at
this event.  If you'd like to get involved, please contact
me ASAP. Richmond County ARES holds its monthly meetings on
the second Thursday of the month with the exception of July & August
at Eger Nursing home on Staten Island. Meetings begin at 8:30PM.
June 25th will find us participating in the Luke Parlatore
Memorial Run.  Again, we are looking for a good turn-out,
so please contact me if you wish to participate.

(for George Gluck, DEC, WA2WKV).
On June 11th, Nassau ARES supported the American Red Cross
in Nassau County for a damage assessment exercise, providing
communications between 6 dispatched teams and the Director,
located at the Communications ERV at the Mineola Community
Center. During the exercise, Red Cross volunteers
appreciated the need for clear, fast communications when a
team was confronted by a hostile tenant, which later was identified
as a drug house occupant. The Monthly Meeting on the 14th
addressed the after action plan for the Long Island Marathon,
which was later forwarded to the personnel that run the marathon
in time for their after action review. There were
several valuable observations made by operators, which will
result in improvements in next year's operations.

Suffolk County - Bill Schiebel N2NFI, DEC SC:

Tom Carrubba KA2D, Section Emergency Coordinator:
First, congratulations to NYC and Mike Lisenco N2YBB for
their dedication and hard work to officially re-establish
NYC RACES. June starts Hurricane Season. Are you prepared?
KA2D represented ARRL and NLI ARES at the LI/NYC Emergency
Management Conference June 1-2 The scenario was a category 4
hurricane and how it would effect our area. Besides representatives
from area utilities, PD, FD, EMT and EOMs, FEMA and SEMO,
representative from two Florida counties presented parts of
the after action scenarios. This was a good opportunity to
meet with representatives from NYSEMO, NYC OEM, NC OEM and
newly appointed SC Director of Emergency Preparedness,
Belinda Pagdanganan who is looking forward to working with
amateur radio. In a conversation with NWS' Gary Conte ARES
reaffirmed it's commitment to NWS and SKYWARN.  It is
imperative that ALL ARES and RACES members take the FEMA
online course IS-700. "National Incident Management System
