ARRL NYC/LI August E-happenings Newsletter Written and Edited by George Tranos N2GA, ARRL Section Manager NYC/LI -- Welcome! This is the August edition of the NY City / Long Island "ehappenings" Section newsletter! This newsletter is here to serve the Amateur Radio community in our area. I welcome and encourage all submissions. Please help make this your newsletter! I especially encourage officers of the area's Amateur Radio clubs to submit their meeting announcements, guest speakers and special events. Please submit any information for the September issue prior to the end of August. August 2006 is the 64th regular edition since this newsletter was inaugurated in March, 2001. Section News Section News is available ONLY on the world-wide-web. See the NLI site at: http://www.arrl.org/sections/?sect=NLI IN THIS ISSUE: * From George Tranos N2GA, Section Manager * From Tom Carrubba KA2D, Section Emergency Coordinator * From Jim Minor W2DSX, Section Traffic Manager * From Diane Ortiz K2DO, Public Information Coordinator * World Radiosport Team Championship (WRTC-2006) * BARA to host Hudson Division Awards Dinner on November 11 * Peconic ARC outing to ARRL HQ in Newington, CT * KCRA annual September 11th Memorial Special Event * UPCOMING Club Events * Other "stuff" * NLI Section Website: http://hudson.arrl.org/nli HAPPENINGS * From George Tranos N2GA, Section Manager Now that August is here, my prediction from last month about the hot weather has surely hit home. Parts of Queens were without power for more than a week when lightning hit and disrupted ConEd's power grid. Regardless of the source of power disruption, Amateur Radio is ready to step in when needed and called upon. Make sure you and your family are ready. Join your local ARES group, keep your batteries charged and have an evacuation and communications plan. In July, I was privileged to participate in the World Radiosport Team Championship (WRTC 2006) held in Florianopolis, Brazil. Amateurs from around the world gathered on Santa Catarina Island in southern Brazil at the hotel Costao do Santinho. Forty six teams of two competed for the title of world's best operating team. Operators utilized similar stations with identical antennas and amplifiers spread out over roughly 150 miles in southern Brazil. A random drawing for sites, referees and callsigns was performed the Friday prior to the IARU contest and then teams, hosts and referees traveled to the respective sites to set up for the contest. After the 24 hour contest period, the teams returned to WRTC Headquarters to turn in their logs and get some needed rest. I was lucky enough to be selected to be one of the 46 referees who listened and observed the contest, collected the logs and insured that the competitors played fairly by the rules. By the luck of the draw, I was assigned as referee for the Brazilian national team of Vitor PY2NY and Eric PY2EMC. We traveled about 120 miles north in Vitor's car to near San Francisco do Sul, where their station was set up at an old Navy fort dug into the side of a mountain. Ten minutes before the start of the contest, we opened the sealed envelope with their callsign - PT5X and they set up their computer logging software with the call and were on the air! I heard a few callsigns I knew from NY including NLI Affiliated Club Coordinator Phil N2MUN call in during the contest. It was great fun listening to Vitor and Eric make contacts. While they didn't win (they placed 19th out of 46), they were fabulous operators and great gentlemen and it was a real honor to participate in this truly international event. One of the basic purposes of ham radio is the ability of the radio amateur to enhance international goodwill. This truly did occur at WRTC 2006! There were hams from over 38 countries in attendance and they all mingled, socialized, conversed and competed in a civilized way. Many old friendships were rekindled and new ones made. It was a fabulous event and I'm glad I got the chance to participate. If only our government representatives acted as courteously, our world would be in much better shape than it is today! If you ever get the chance to go, please take advantage of the opportunity as you'll probably see another part of the world you wouldn't otherwise see and have ham radio friends who live there as your personal guides. WRTC is the Olympics of ham radio and just like the real "sports" Olympics, it is international in flavor and broad in scope. It was a great way to spend part of my summer. 73, George * From Tom Carrubba KA2D, Section Emergency Coordinator Tom was unable to file a report this month but did want me to indicate that he has received reports from the districts. The ARES E-Letter to debut (Aug 11, 2005) -- Licensed League members with ARRL Field Organization appointments involving emergency communication or public service will be the first to receive the debut issue of The ARES E-Letter! The premier edition of the monthly national newsletter is set for release Wednesday, August 17, and will publish on the third Wednesday of each month after that. Since 9/11, interest within the Amateur Radio community in emergency communication and public service has greatly increased. More than ever, hams are volunteering to help meet the communication needs of our nation, states and communities. The ARES E-Letter is a response to this expanding awareness. Anyone with an interest in emergency communication or public service activities can sign up online to receive The ARES E-Letter. Each issue will contain a wealth of after-action reports, editorials, technical tips, news and views--information you'd otherwise have to wait for in QST. Timeliness, utility and inspiration are the goals of this informative publication that's devoted entirely to Amateur Radio emergency communication and public service. Editing the first issue is former long-time ARRL Headquarters staff member Rick Palm, K1CE, who oversaw activities involving ARRL Section Managers, the ARRL Field Organization and the Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES). We invite subscribers to share a copy with club newsletter editors or with friends who may not be ARRL members but still might be interested in receiving it. Those receiving the premier edition also may opt out of getting further copies if they wish.
