HAPPENINGS
* From Mike Lisenco N2YBB, Section Manager
I hope you are all having a wonderful summer and enjoying this heat-wave.
August has been a typically slow
month here. Not much going on. The highlight of the month for me was the visit
I made to the August meeting of the Peconic Amateur Radio Club. For a NYC guy
like me, the trip to Peconic was a vacation day! Located mid-way through the
north fork of Long Island, I made the 100 mile road trip with my trusty
FT-857D. 20 meters was hopping that day and I was having great success working
through Europe and into Africa. When I made it through Riverhead, I found
myself in Long Island’s wine country. Unfortunately, I must plead ignorance as
I didn’t know that LI was the home of so many wineries. Of course if I had
known I probably wouldn’t have made it to the meeting and would most likely
still be tasting instead of typing this.
My thanks to Roberta Keis, N2RBU for
a lovely dinner and all the Peconic membership for having me over.
-------
Now on to more serious things. As
you know, we are in the height of Hurricane Season. As of this moment, it would
appear that Hurricane Bill will bypass us and make landfall in Nova Scotia. Of
course, it’s still early and we won’t know for certain for another day or so.
Be that as it may, this area is long
overdue for a serious hurricane. ARES members throughout the Section have been
preparing for a possible activation. I participated in a conference call with
the American Red Cross in Greater New York yesterday to discuss plans for a
possible activation should this hurricane change course.
We’ve all seen what damage a
hurricane can do and how amateur radio plays a part in the response by providing
backup communications to public service agencies when “all else fails”.
It is important to note that we are
NOT first responders. In fact, we often face a public relations problem because
the perception that first responders often have of hams is that we are
“amateurs” and “wannabees”.
Having said that, please note that
ARES is a legitimate response organization that participates through existing
relationships with local first-response public agencies and secondary response
support agencies (like the Red Cross and Salvation Army). ARES members are
thoroughly trained in Emergency Communications, and ARES is a respected and
integral cog in the response wheel.
If you are already an ARES
volunteer, I thank you for your time and dedication. If you are not, please get
involved. Amateur radio is a public service, and one way to effect that service
is to participate in emergency communications. Please contact your local ARES
Emergency Coordinator or District Emergency Coordinator. Let them know that you
would like to be a part of this worthwhile organization.
Starting this month, there will be a
separate listing on the NLI website of all ARES contacts as well as a listing of
all monthly meetings (for those groups that have them). ARES is set up first by
County, then by City or Township. Look for your area and please get in touch.
------
As of the moment, my dance card is empty for the month of September. If you
would like me to attend an upcoming meeting of your club, please email me at
n2ybb@arrl.org and I'll be more than happy to set it up.
------
AGAIN, THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!
PLEASE READ AND FOLLOW-UP WITH A LETTER!!!
ARRL Seeks Member Support for HR 2160
To support HR 2160 -- The Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Enhancement Act
of 2009 -- the ARRL is asking its membership to contact their members of the US
House of Representatives with a request to become co-sponsors of this
significant piece of legislation.
"Getting a bill successfully through Congress is a formidable task -- one that
is going to require the involvement of every ARRL member," said ARRL Regulatory
Information Manager Dan Henderson, N1ND. "Working with our Washington consulting
firm Chwat & Co, we are laying a dynamic approach that will allow us to make our
case most effectively. We have developed a strategy to maximize our impact when
dealing with each member of Congress."
Since the anthrax scare that followed the 9-11 attacks, all incoming mail to
Congress is delayed anywhere from four to six weeks while it is screened. This
means using normal US Mail is no longer an effective method of letting Congress
hear your voice. While e-mail is convenient, it is not effective, due to the
large volume of e-mail that each Congressional office receives.
"To ensure that ARRL members' letters are quickly and expediently received by
Congress, our strategy is to ask ARRL members send their letters directly to
Chwat & Co," said Henderson. "Chwat's staff will sort the letters by
Congressional district and hand-deliver them to the appropriate House offices,
providing a direct point of contact with the Congressman and their staff. This
personal contact gives us the chance to provide not only letters from
constituents, but information from the ARRL on why this legislation is
important."
The ARRL has provided a sample letter for League members to personalize and send
to their Congressional representative.
For more information on the Act and the sample letter, go
to:
http://www.arrl.org/news/stories/2009/05/12/10818/?nc=1
------
In closing I want to take the time to publicly thank all of my staff for
volunteering their time and hard work. Each and every member of the NLI staff
devotes a great deal of personal time and energy to help keep the NLI Field
Organization going. They are listed throughout this eNewsletter. Without them,
I wouldn’t be able to do my job as Section Manager.
And a special thank you to Mitch Cohen, N2RGA, for
maintaining the NLI website.
That's it for me this month. I hope all of you are enjoying
the summer. Hpe CU on the bands!
73,
Mike N2YBB

From Jim Mezey W2FKV, ARES Section Emergency Coordinator
Greetings:
The dog days of summer have finally arrived and with it comes the arrival of
serious weather activity...Thunder storms, Tropical depressions and
Hurricanes.....are you ready ??
The Sections key players in digital operations will be coming together in a few
weeks to see if there is a viable solution to enhance digital concerns. It
should be an interesting get together with a positive projection. More to
follow.
NYC: DEC, Russ Logar, KC2LSB reported the Manhattan is getting back on
its feet and will be viable in the near future. He had added a late report of a
drill had with NYC Red Cross in July where many lessons were learned by both
sides. ICS forms were used.
Nassau: DEC, Rob Martens, K2RRM reported that Nassau took part in the Gold
Coast Bike Tour. Operators logged 585 man hours.
Suffolk: Town of Huntington EC John Allocca, WB2LUA reported a routine
month.
Town of Islip EC John Blowsky, KB2SCS also reported a routine
month.
No other reports from Suffolk.
While the weather is hot please keep hydrated and keep your batteries charged...
