Welcome!  This is the September edition of the NY City / Long Island
"ehappenings" Section newsletter!  This newsletter is here to serve
the Amateur Radio community in our area.  I welcome and
encourage all submissions.  Please help make this your newsletter!
I especially encourage officers of the area's Amateur Radio clubs to
submit their meeting announcements, guest speakers and special
events.

QST Section News

The QST Section News column for November 2001 is due on September
12.  If you or your club has anything which you feel is of interest to
the other members in the section, please contact me before September 12.

HAPPENINGS

Now that summer is over, most Amateur Radio clubs are getting
back in the swing, with meetings and events happening almost
every week.  Now is the time to get back involved with your local
club.  Not a member of a club?  Check out the club listings on

NLI Club Presidents met on Sunday, August 12, to discuss issues
of interest to the clubs.  The primary focus of this meeting was
hamfests and new laws in NY State with respect to sales tax.
Another meeting of this group will take place on Sunday,
September 16, at 10 AM at Babylon Town Hall EOC, on
Sunrise Highway in North Lindenhurst.  Club Presidents or
their representatives are encouraged to attend.  For more

Ham Radio University 2002 - The first planning meeting for
this third annual event will be on Monday, September 24 at
7 pm at Babylon Town EOC.  Come down and help make this

National Traffic System News: NLI-CW Net (NLI/cw), 3630 KHz,
7:30 pm local, Monday through Friday accepts all stations
regardless of speed, and our NCS's always answer calling stations
at their own speed (the usual speed of the net call up on NLI is
never faster than 17 wpm so even 10 wpm guys and gals can
usually catch enough to figure out). Contact Section Traffic

Suffolk County VHF Traffic Net is on 145.210 repeater on
Mondays thru Thursdays at 8:00 PM.  Net control is Claire
WA2VZK.  Contact Claire at caheil@aol.com.   Nassau County
VHF Traffic Net is daily at 7:30 PM on 146.805 repeater.
NY City VHF Traffic Net is daily at 8 PM on 146.43.
 
Emil Tillona KD1F is the section DXCC card checker and is
avaiable for field checking of QSL cards for your DXCC Award.

Nassau County Police ARC club meeting on Tuesday,

Mid Island Amateur Radio Repeater Association Monthly Meeting
is Tuesday, September 4, at 7 PM at the Brookhaven Rec Center in

The Suffolk County Radio Club is starting an Amateur Radio Operator
Licensing Class starting on Tuesday, September 4. These classes will
be for the entry level licenses, no Code is required! Classes will be held
on the FIRST and THIRD Tuesdays of each month at the Bohemia
Recreation Center located on Ruzicka Way in Bohemia! Classes will

work session on Saturday, September 8, at Babylon Town Hall

Town of Babylon ARES requests the help of Amateur Radio
Operators on Sunday, September 9, 2001, for the Babylon Village

Yankee Clipper Contest Club Meeting on Thursday, September 13,
at the Seaport Buffet, 2027 Emmons Ave, Brooklyn NY 11235 at
8 pm.  This meeting is sponsored by the Empire Contest Club.

of Regional/Affinity Teams. Discussion on Local area recognition

Radio Operators for the Great Cow Harbor 10K Run in Northport

Great South Bay ARC is hosting Emil Tilona KD1F for a DXCC
card checking session.  The session will be held at Babylon Town
Hall EOC, 200 East Sunrise Highway, North Lindenhurst at 10 am.

The previously announced Garden State ARC Hamfest in Titon Falls,
New Jersey for Sunday, September 16, has been CANCELLED.

NYC / Long Island Section Club Presidents meeting is on Sunday,
September 16, at 10 am at Babylon Town Hall EOC, 200 East
Sunrise Highway, North Lindenhurst. All area club presidents

The United States Postal Service is having a Postal Family Day
gathering on Sunday, Sept. 16, from 11 am to 4 pm. The event
will be held at the Melville Post Office, 718 Walt Whitman Rd,
Melville, NY 11747.  This is just off Route 110 across from the
Huntington Hilton. They are inviting Amateur Radio to set up a
display and information booth. If you are interested in helping

Long Island DX Association will meet on Friday, September 21 at
the Polytechnic Institute- Route 110 in East Farmingdale at 8pm.
Come in the rear door of the main building adjacent to the East side
of Rte. 110. Anyone interested in DX is welcome and refreshments

Ham Radio University 2002 Planning meeting is Monday, Sept.

The Long Island QRP Club will hold a club meeting on Saturday,
September 29, at Sunken Meadow State Park, area 4, at 11 AM.
Bring rigs, batteries, antennas, etc., and we'll put some gear on the air.
There are lots of trees in the picnic area where we'll be meeting.
