HAPPENINGS

Hundreds of Amateur Radio operators responded when the
power went out on Thursday, August 14. When the
electricity stopped flowing and cell sites were overwhelmed
with call volume, hams stepped in to help out. Hams passed
hundreds of inquiries and health-and-welfare traffic. Tom
Carrubba KA2D, the NLI Section Emergency Coordinator
said "It is though their dedication and training that makes
my job easy. I did not have to call out anyone, all three
districts were already on the air as soon as the power went
down. Special mention to Suffolk County DEC Bill Scheibel
N2NFI, NYC DEC Charles Hargrove N2NOV and Nassau
County DEC George Gluck WA2WKV and their staff for
responding to our served agencies needs. Also to the NYC
VHF Big Apple NTS Traffic Net with Adam Fine AB2IZ
as NCS and Suffolk County VHF Traffic Net with Ed
Heidelberger N2IHR as NCS for operating under emergency
conditions". Hams were there and ready because they have
the equipment, training and expertise to get and stay on the air.
Many Amateur Radio repeaters and home stations relied on
emergency power to continue communicating. Some ran
impromptu "information" nets and stood by for emergency
and priority traffic. Mobile radio amateurs operated from
the cars and from handheld transceivers. Other hams
headed towards emergency operations centers, served
agency locations (such as the Salvation Army or American
Red Cross) or to their homes to be available if needed.
Tom further stated "They are there every day.. 24/7".
If you helped out in any way, thank you for showing that
a need still exists for Amateur Radio in emergencies.

LIMARC Hamfest on Sunday, September 7
The Long Island Mobile Amateur Radio Club will hold its Fall Outdoor
hamfest on Sunday, September 7, at Briarcliffe College, 1055 Stewart
Ave, Bethpage NY. For more information, see http://www.limarc.org
or e-mail hamfest@limarc.org

The Second Annual 9/11 Commemorative Net will be held on
Thursday, September 11 to honor those who lost their lives and
those who spent so much time trying to find survivors after that
terrible act of terrorism against our people and our country. The
day will start with the main EchoLink net servers opening at 6:00
AM EST and the directed net to begin that evening at 7:00 PM
EST. All EchoLink, IRLP and eQSO servers are invited to join at
the times of their own choosing during the day to actively
participate or just listen, but should plan to link no later than 7 PM
EST. Do you know someone who operated in the original 9/11
operation in NYC? We are looking for hams, firemen, Police and
other relief workers who would be guest speakers to remember
friends and loved ones they may have lost, and talk about acts of
heroism by those involved in the search and rescue effort. Special
speakers from such organizations as the ARRL and others will
speak to the network -- as Jim Haynie, ARRL President did
last year. If you know of a possible guest speaker, contact
N2LEN (N2LEN1@aol.com) or K5JD (K5JD@arrl.net) and
give them contact information.  (Submitted by Len N2LEN).

The Long Island Mobile Amateur Radio Club will hold a
combined Technician Class theory course and Morse Code
5 words-per-minute class in Huntington. It starts on Tuesday,
September 23, at Huntington High School. It will run from
7:30 to 8:30 PM for the theory and from 8:30 to 9:30 PM for
the Morse Code. The theory course will last 5 weeks and the
Morse Code class will last 8 weeks. For more information,
contact Norman Wesler K2YEW at k2yew@limarc.org or
516-536-5911.

ARRL re-soliciting 2003 McGan Award nominations
During its July meeting, the ARRL Board of Directors voted to
re-solicit nominations for the 2003 Philip J. McGan Memorial
Silver Antenna Award. The ARRL Public Relations Committee
has determined that none of the nominations submitted for this
year's award adequately fit the award criteria. "All three nominees
have achieved notable success in the area of public service,"
Committee Chairman Jeff Reinhardt, AA6JR, said, "but the
committee did not feel that the nominations reflected the
important volunteer public relations efforts for which the award
is given." Public relations involves efforts specifically directed at
bringing Amateur Radio to the attention of the general public and
the news media in a positive light. Nomination forms are available
on the ARRL Web site. Return completed entry forms and
supporting materials to Philip J. McGan Memorial Silver Antenna
Award, c/o Jennifer Hagy, N1TDY, ARRL, 225 Main St,
Newington, CT 06111. Nominations must be received at ARRL
Headquarters by 5 PM Eastern Daylight Time on September 2, 2003.

From Tom Carrubba KA2D, Section Emergency Coordinator:
New York City: June was active with A-Thon support.
Members of NYC ARES participated in the Al Ronaldson Run
On Staten Island on June 15, the Diabetes Bike Tour in
Manhattan/NNJ/Rockland on June 22nd with 13 operators,
the Liberty Outrigger Challenge in Manhattan on June 28 with
13 operators, the Pepper Martin Run on Staten Island on
July 4 with 10 operators.
Kings County (from EC Adam Fine AB2IZ): Kings County
ARES has lost one of it's own. It is with deep regret and
sadness that I announce that W2JER became a Silent Key.
Jerry was very active in amateur radio both with his radio
club and ARES. He was always somebody I could
bounce ideas off of and his guidance and friendship
will be sincerely missed.

Suffolk County: No report

SEC; Continue to try and get an interlinked repeater system
completed. The project has received resistance by
individuals and groups who do not understand the importance
or purpose of this system. Continue to support the ARRL CCE
EC courses. I have issued a request to all NLI ARES members
through the DEC to enroll and complete at least EC-001.

Transmitter hunting used to be a very popular activity on Long Island,
but lately interest has declined. We want to let you know that 2 meter
hunts have been sponsored and conducted by the Plaza Repeater Group
(146.640/Mineola) for at least the past 25 years. The hunts are normally
held in Nassau County, but we are willing to travel into Queens or
Suffolk if there is interest. It's an exciting activity and we think you'll
have a great time. For further information, contact Larry Berger,
WA2SUH at 516-223-4611, or e-mail at wa2suh@aol.com.
