Please join us in making this year even better! Please RSVP to n2ga@arrl.net if you are planning on attending and thanks in advance! Submitted by George Tranos N2GA, Chairman, Ham Radio University 2005 * From Tom Carrubba KA2D, Section Emergency Coordinator New York City District - DEC Michael Lisenco N2YBB: July was a very quiet month. New York City ARES continues to grow. Summertime is usually a quiet time in terms of public events, but Staten Island started the month with its first event of the year; the Staten Island Flat as a Pancake Triathlon. This was a world class event with athletes from all over competing. The event was a great success and ARES has been invited back for next year. At present we are getting ready for the possibility of activation during the Republican National Convention in August. We will also be holding the first summertime Citywide meeting on August 10, 2004 at the Red Cross of Greater New York. John Healy, KA2ABV, EC Manhattan: New York County ARES meeting - 07/22/04 Topics discussed: Management changes within the borough; Taking ARRL Courses CCE-001/002/003; New York City District ARES Meeting on Tuesday, August 10, 2004; Upcoming Red Cross Courses; Availability for upcoming Republican National Convention. In attendance: KA2ABV, N2NVU, KC2HZH, WB1AAY, KC2NCU, WB2MNR, K2MVR, N2YBB The next meeting will be on Thursday, August 26, 2004 at 6:30pm. The location is the American Red Cross of Greater New York, 150 Amsterdam Avenue. Joe Nieves N2TEE; EC Richmond County Flat As a Pancake Triathlon, July 11th: This event was new for Richmond county ARES in 2004. It was only the second time around for the event planners. All involved were extremely pleased with our performance. The layout of the courses and different disciplines (bike, run, swim) made for an exciting event to work. For some of us, our day began at 5:30am helping to manage the parking and staging areas. We were able to set up a net control station and shelter nearby the registration and committee tent. Our group was able to provide a shady area on this rather warm day courtesy of Joe, NECR. Joe's portable canopy tent went up rather quickly and without too much fuss. Nothing could be done about the mosquitoes, yet Joe hung in their as net control throughout the morning. The race organizers were new to the idea of ham radio operators. Jan, W2KMA, and I came up with a plan to help utilize our resources in as many visible areas as possible. Our efforts paid off with all the pre-planning. As the event progressed, the race director I was shadowing commented many times about our effectiveness. He liked the fact that we were relaying real time information to him on the status of participants. We also played a role with reopening the major thoroughfares by tracking participants. The NYPD Community Affairs personnel began to rely on our net control tent for progress updates. Richmond County ARES will definitely be invited to participate in the coming years. I foresee our group providing more sophisticated information to the race organizers. I would like to thank the New York City Repeater Association (NYCRA) for the use of their newly upgraded repeater. As a matter of record, the repeater in use had only been put on the air a day or two prior to this event. NYCRA put in the extra effort to ensure that we had adequate coverage for the event. We could not have had such a successful event without the help of the following stations: KC2JXM, KC2LLL, N2ECR, N2TEE, N2YBB, W2DEA, W2KMA,WA2IAF Thanks to all who supported our efforts. Charles Gallo KC2IXE; EC Queens County No additional comments Mark Elzey, K2CSX; EC Bronx No additional comments Adam Fine AB2IZ, EC Kings County Flat-as-a-Pancake Triathlon (SI) - 07/11/04 KC2JXM and N2ECR represented Kings County ARES well at this inaugural Staten Island event. Kings County ARES meeting - 07/21/04 Topics discussed: Synopsis of first six months of the year; Submitting PSHR to STM; Plans for National Night Out - Tuesday, August 3rd, 2004; Taking ARRL Courses CCE-001/002/003; New York City District ARES Meeting on Tuesday, August 10th, 2004; Upcoming Red Cross Courses; Availability for upcoming Republican National Convention. In attendance: AB2IZ, K2RDG, KA2FXR, KA2KDQ, KB2SUR, KB2VDV, KC2BYH, KC2CBL, KC2EDR, KC2EKE , KC2HMS, KC2JXM, KC2KGU, KC2KGV, KC2LYT, KC2MGY, KC2MHY, KD2VQ, N2ECR, N2RGA, N2YBB, W2/8R1B, W2DEA, and WA2JNF. Kings County ARES has a weekly net, every Sunday at 8PM. We meet on the W2CMA repeater (446.675/-5MHz/114.8) in order to discuss issues of relevance to the ARES community at large and Kings County ARES specifically. We welcome, encourage and invite all amateur radio operators to participate. Kings County ARES can be found on the web. Visit us at www.kingscountyares.org. Thanks to Mitch (N2RGA) for all the hard work he puts into the site on an almost daily basis. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, August 18th, 2004 at 7:30pm. The location is UCP 121 Lawrence Street, between Ocean Parkway and Seton Place Brooklyn, NY. Nassau County - Mario Maltese WF2T; EC Nassau County (for George Gluck, DEC, WA2WKV). On July 11th, Nassau ARES again provided communications in support of the Gold Coast Bike Tour. On July 13th, Jim Mezey W2KFV, former fire chief, presented a PowerPoint training session for operators at Emergency Operations Centers. Jim gave an overview of the EOC's in the county, and reviewed what would be expected of the ham operator assigned to an EOC during an event. 20 members attended. Suffolk County - Bill Schiebel N2NFI, DEC SC: Walter M. Wenzel, KA2RGI, EC Town of Babylon, John A. Allocca, WB2LUA EC, Town of Huntington Don Fisher, N2QHV, EC Town of Southold Tom Carrubba KA2D, Section Emergency Coordinator: July was a quiet month. I made a request through the DEC's to have members in their districts to send a message to the SEC via packet radio. Only six messages were received, all from Suffolk County. We must improve our packet radio readiness in NLI. I also asked for roster update and received only a few. Requests need to be fulfilled. * From Claire Heil WA2VZK, Section Traffic Manager STM Claire Heil WA2VZK reports the following: 1)NTS "section level" CW nets : NYS/M 10am local time daily NYS/E 7pm local time daily NYS/L 10pm local time daily All our "section level" cw nets meet on 3677 KHz . 2)NTS "section level" phone nets: New York Phone (NYP) 1pm daily (currently meeting on 7237 KHz but usually meets on 3925 KHz during the winter months.)
