HAPPENINGS

* Hurricane Katrina - what to do and how to help
As you know, Hurricane Katrina has devastated parts of Louisiana
and Mississippi.  If you want to help out, please read and
understand the following.  Please note that most sections, states
and divisions have mutual aid agreements.  Please standby until
aid is requested.  A Hurricane Katrina disaster communications
volunteer registration and message traffic database has been set up
at http://katrina.ab2m.net/  Please register on this page if you want
to help and then wait until called to assist.  Our thoughts and
prayers are with the people of Louisiana and Mississippi.  They
were there for us during the World Trade Center disaster.  I'm
sure all of Amateur Radio will step forward when the time arises
to be there for them.  Please note the following:

Jerry Reimer, KK5CA, Section Emergency Coordinator from South Texas
reports the following:  "The on-the-ground situation in SE Louisiana and
SW Mississippi is as bad as television is reporting.  Neither state is
permitting disaster relief agencies into the affected areas except on
a very limited basis and only then where conditions are stable.
Nearly everyone is still staging as close by as possible and waiting.
The Louisiana SM (Mickey Cox K5MC) and SEC (Gary Stratton K5GLS)
are in communications with state officials, who have directed them to NOT advertise for volunteers.  Some volunteers have been requested, and these are being staged at the state EOC.  The situation for the Mississippi SM and SEC, Malcolm Keown W5XX, in Vicksburg MS is very uncertain.  His station is completely on the ground and EchoLink repeaters in the area are off-the-air.  Attempts to contact Assistant SMs have been unsuccessful.

An Amateur Radio operator registration web site has been setup and
is ready to go public when approval is received.  Some Amateur Radio
operators are known to be traveling towards the affected areas with
emergency services and disaster relief agencies as dedicated communications resources.   Despite everyone's nearly overwhelming desire to help, about all we can do right now is to make preparations for a prompt response when the officials finally give their approval.  None of us know when that will occur."

* HRU 2006 planning meeting on Tuesday, September 13
The initial HRU 2006 meeting took place on Tuesday, August 2.
The next planning committee meeting will be held on Tuesday,
September 13 starting at 7 PM. The meeting will be held at Babylon
Town Hall on Sunrise Highway in North Lindenhurst. It will be held
in the ARES/RACES room in the basement (enter around back and down the outside staircase). This is one of the monthly operational meetings of theplanning committee for Ham Radio University 2006. HRU is a day of
education for and about Amateur Radio. This will be the 7th annual
event! This year, HRU is again being held at Briarcliffe College,
1055 Stewart Avenue, Bethpage, NY, on Sunday, January 8, 2006.
The HRU planning committee jointly decides the format and structure
of the event including what forums are held, what moderators to
invite, the setup, takedown, talkin, publicity, special event
operation and all other aspects of HRU. As always, your help is
solicited. Please feel free to spead the word of this announcement
to the Amateur Radio population in general. I hope you can make the
meeting and we can again make this year's HRU a success.

* Finding ham radio classes a mouse click away!
A new user-friendly feature on the ARRL Web site--the ARRL Amateur
Licensing Class Search Page--lets prospective hams search for a
licensing class in their area. It also allows ARRL-registered
instructors to list their classes on the Web.  Visitors can search for
classes by ZIP code, ARRL Section or state.
http://www.arrl.org/FandES/courses/
Registered ARRL instructors can list their classes by visiting the
Volunteer Instructor Support page and completing a simple form.
http://www.arrl.org/FandES/ead/instructor/
Listings will automatically drop from the list when the class is
completed. The new page also links beginners and those planning to
upgrade to various resources, including ARRL's Now You're Talking! study manual and the ARRL Exam Session Search page.
http://www.arrl.org/arrlvec/examsearch.phtml
Newcomers may also want to visit the "Welcome to Amateur Radio" page on the ARRL Web site.
http://www.arrl.org/hamradio.html   "We're very excited about this new
feature that makes it easier for prospective hams to find a class so
that they can earn their Amateur Radio license," said ARRL Affiliated
Club and Mentor Program Manager Norm Fusaro, W3IZ. "ARRL also continues to support all of the instructors who give so much time and energy to teaching classes for new hams and upgraders." To become a registered ARRL Volunteer Instructor, contact Fusaro; 860-594-0230. [w3iz@arrl.org]

* ARES E-Letter debuts, sign up now!
The ARES E-Letter to debut (Aug 11, 2005) -- Licensed League
members with ARRL Field Organization appointments involving
emergency communication or public service will be the first
to receive the debut issue of The ARES E-Letter! The premier
edition of the monthly national newsletter is set for
release Wednesday, August 17, and will publish on the third
Wednesday of each month after that. Since 9/11, interest
within the Amateur Radio community in emergency
communication and public service has greatly increased. More
than ever, hams are volunteering to help meet the
communication needs of our nation, states and communities.
The ARES E-Letter is a response to this expanding awareness.
Anyone with an interest in emergency communication or public
service activities can sign up online to receive The ARES
E-Letter. Each issue will contain a wealth of after-action
reports, editorials, technical tips, news and
views--information you'd otherwise have to wait for in QST.
Timeliness, utility and inspiration are the goals of this
informative publication that's devoted entirely to Amateur
Radio emergency communication and public service. Editing
the first issue is former long-time ARRL Headquarters staff
member Rick Palm, K1CE, who oversaw activities involving
ARRL Section Managers, the ARRL Field Organization and the
Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES). We invite
subscribers to share a copy with club newsletter editors or
with friends who may not be ARRL members but still might be
interested in receiving it. Those receiving the premier
edition also may opt out of getting further copies if they
wish. [from ARRL 08/11/05]
