HAPPENINGS

* From George Tranos N2GA, Section Manager
It's hard to believe but September is really here!  The summer is
almost gone and the first strong storm (Ernesto) of the Hurricane season
is upon us.  It's not too late to update your disaster preparedness plan.
Before the colder weather moves in, it's time to finish your outside
antenna projects (or get moving if you haven't already started!).
Please consider joining your local ARES group, keep your batteries
charged and have an evacuation and communications plan.

Last weekend, I drove up to Boxboro, MA, for the biannual New
England Division convention and hamfest.  Except for the longer than
usual drive up (because of a tornado warning and heavy rain), the
weekend was wonderful.  The organizers in Boxboro do a great job
of creating an event with something for everyone.  I attended the DX
dinner on Friday night, cruised the manufacturer's exhibits and flea
market Saturday morning, attend Bob Heil's fantastic seminar on
"It all starts at the microphone" at noon.  Bob is a great speaker,
a knowledgeable technician and terrific promoter of Amateur Radio.

As an aside, I recently returned from a long weekend motorcycle trip
out to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio.  This is a
"must do" trip for any music fan and was part of a great summer trip
for us.  Just by chance when visiting the museum, I came across a large
display with Heil sound equipment.  Looking more closely, there was
a biography of Bob Heil with a history of his audio innovations.  Bob
had recently been inducted as a member of the Rock and Roll Hall!  Bob
spent much time as the audio guru for the Grateful Dead and the Who,
among others.  Anyway, in this biography was a mention of Amateur
Radio!  It came across that Bob owes a lot of what he's done to his
Amateur Radio roots.  After hearing Bob speak at Boxboro, it's
obvious of his love for the hobby (and his tireless promotion of both
ham radio and Heil Sound)!  Bob did a great live presentation of
how proper audio adjustment and microphone choice can affect your
on-the-air audio quality.  Great stuff and if you ever get a chance to
hear and see him, make sure you don't miss it!

There was a great presentation by members of the Yankee Clipper
Contest Club on different aspects of contesting and why and how you
can get started.  See http://www.yccc.org for more information.
A YCCC meeting was held right afterwards.  I got a chance to renew
my YCCC membership and took a chance in the scholarship raffle for
a new Icom IC756 Pro III radio and other prizes.  After the meeting,
John Crovelli W2GD was chosen to draw the raffle prize winners.
When John said the winner of the Icom radio was callsign N2GA, I
couldn't believe I had won!  There was applause as I walked up to the
mike and then the YCCC president Mark Pride K1RX announced the
ticket number that matched the prize.  As it turned out, when he read
the ticket number, it didn't match the one on my ticket....  yep, John
had "broken" my call - I wasn't the winner!   The winner turned out
to be N2GC - Mike Musitano of Huntington - congratulations Mike!
Mike is a great contester in his own right and has been using an old
Kenwood rig.  While I didn't "need" the radio, it was still a great
disappointment having been called as the winner and then subsequently
told "oops, sorry"!   Maybe Mike will let me use his new radio every
once in a while!

Anyway, Boxboro was a great event.  There were all types of seminars,
a nice manufacturer's area where you could see all the new "stuff" and
even buy some if you wanted.  There was a nice outdoor fleamarket and
it was held at a nice facility, the Holiday Inn at Boxboro off a main
highway (route 495).  It got me thinking of another nice event that's
held right here in our own back yard - Ham Radio University.

Ham Radio University 2007 is tentatively set for Sunday, January 7, 2007,
at Briarcliffe College in Bethpage.  After four years as HRU chairman,
it is time for a change and I've resigned as chairman.  Neil Heft KC2KY
is now the new Ham Radio University 2007 chairman! Congratulations
and good luck to Neil. I'll be staying on the HRU committee and will
continue to help out at HRU but Neil will now be the front man and I'm
sure will continue to guide the Ham Radio University concept to new heights.
HRU founder and past chairman Phil Lewis N2MUN will also be
continuing on the committee. We all will continue to strive to make HRU
an important event for our area. The HRU committee continues to
welcome input from hams throughout New York City and Long Island.
Initial plans call for the first HRU planning meeting on Wednesday,
September 20th at Babylon Town Hall starting at 7 pm. All are welcome
to attend. In the meantime, keep your eyes and ears open for more HRU
activity shortly and join me in wishing Neil Heft good success in his first
year as HRU chairman!

73, George

* Other "stuff"

- Finding ham radio classes a mouse click away!
A new user-friendly feature on the ARRL Web site--the ARRL Amateur
Licensing Class Search Page--lets prospective hams search for a
licensing class in their area. It also allows ARRL-registered
instructors to list their classes on the Web.  Visitors can search for
classes by ZIP code, ARRL Section or state.
http://www.arrl.org/FandES/courses/
Registered ARRL instructors can list their classes by visiting the
Volunteer Instructor Support page and completing a simple form.
http://www.arrl.org/FandES/ead/instructor/
Listings will automatically drop from the list when the class is
completed. The new page also links beginners and those planning to
upgrade to various resources, including ARRL's Now You're Talking! study
manual and the ARRL Exam Session Search page.
http://www.arrl.org/arrlvec/examsearch.phtml
Newcomers may also want to visit the "Welcome to Amateur Radio" page on
the ARRL Web site.
http://www.arrl.org/hamradio.html   "We're very excited about this new
feature that makes it easier for prospective hams to find a class so
that they can earn their Amateur Radio license," said ARRL Affiliated
Club and Mentor Program Manager Norm Fusaro, W3IZ. "ARRL also continues
to support all of the instructors who give so much time and energy to
teaching classes for new hams and upgraders." To become a registered
ARRL Volunteer Instructor, contact Fusaro; 860-594-0230. [w3iz@arrl.org]

- ARES E-Letter debuts, sign up now!
The ARES E-Letter to debut (Aug 11, 2005) -- Licensed League
members with ARRL Field Organization appointments involving
emergency communication or public service will be the first
to receive the debut issue of The ARES E-Letter! The premier
edition of the monthly national newsletter is set for
release Wednesday, August 17, and will publish on the third
Wednesday of each month after that. Since 9/11, interest
within the Amateur Radio community in emergency
communication and public service has greatly increased. More
than ever, hams are volunteering to help meet the
communication needs of our nation, states and communities.
The ARES E-Letter is a response to this expanding awareness.
Anyone with an interest in emergency communication or public
service activities can sign up online to receive The ARES
E-Letter. Each issue will contain a wealth of after-action
reports, editorials, technical tips, news and
views--information you'd otherwise have to wait for in QST.
Timeliness, utility and inspiration are the goals of this
informative publication that's devoted entirely to Amateur
Radio emergency communication and public service. Editing
the first issue is former long-time ARRL Headquarters staff
member Rick Palm, K1CE, who oversaw activities involving
ARRL Section Managers, the ARRL Field Organization and the
Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES). We invite
subscribers to share a copy with club newsletter editors or
with friends who may not be ARRL members but still might be
interested in receiving it. Those receiving the premier
edition also may opt out of getting further copies if they
wish. [from ARRL 08/11/05]
