From Tom Carrubba KA2D, Section Emergency Coordinator:
New York City: No report.
Kings County; from Adam Fine AB2IZ: Kings County ARES
members provided 100 hours of emergency communications for
the Red Cross and NYC OEM. My thanks go out to WA2JNF
for instituting a net on TAC 9 immediately after the power went
out Thursday and was NCS until the net was secured Friday night,
  N2KEN for giving Stu a break, N2ECR for pulling a 16 hour
stint at NYC OEM, W2MPL for pulling a 12 hour stint at NYC
  OEM, N2RGA, N2YBB and W2/8R1B for pulling mini-marathons at
various cooling centers throughout the city, KC2CHE for
working with the Red Cross ERV at Grand Central for half-a-dozen
hours. There were many other Kings County ARES members waiting to
deploy in the event they were needed. Each and every single one of
these radio amateurs, took time away from their personal worries
and their families to serve their community in its time of need.
My hat goes off to each and every single one of them. Thank you
from the staff of Kings County ARES. Additional kudos to Joe,
N2ECR for press release that was picked up and printed in the
September 1st issues of Courier-Life Papers. Public Service Events:
  General Class Upgrade Course - 08/18/03 & 08/19/03: AB2IZ,
  N2KEN, W2MPL.  NYC Triathlon - 08/10/03 - (Manhattan)
  KB2SUR, KC2JXM, N2ECR.  A Kings County ARES meeting
was held on 08/27/03 - Topics discussed were: Commitments to
planned classes; upcoming events; future meeting topics. In attendance:
  AB2IZ, KA2FXR, KA2KDQ, KB2VDV, KC2CBL, KC2CHE, KC2JXM,
  N2ECR, N2RGA, N2YBB,W2MPL, WA2JNF, WB2AAP and WW2W.
The next meeting will be on Wednesday, September 24th, 2003
at 7pm. The location is UCP 121 Lawrence Street, between
Ocean Parkway and Seton Place Brooklyn, NY. All are welcome.
Nassau County: George Gluck WA2WKV is recovering from  a
medical problem. Mario Maltese WF2T has assumed DRC duties
in NC until George is well. NC ARES held a training session on
NVIS antennas and their application in emergency communications.
A subgroup was formed to further develop this mode within ARES.
After several year's delay, an antenna cluster was finally installed on
the roof of the American Red Cross HQ in Mineola, giving the
chapter 2m, 70 cm, 220 MHz, and ARC low band capabilities.
August 14th Blackout: Communications established at 1st,6th,
9th battalion EOC's, Freeport and Hempstead EOC's, ARC HQ, two
cooling shelters and the NC OEM. 15 operators active from
1600 hrs until 0500 the next morning.
Suffolk County: No report
SEC; NLI ARES had an excellent response to the Blackout
2003. All districts were on the air passing traffic immediately.
Many repeaters were down or went down. During the blackout,
I was able to establish communications with NLI SM George Tranos .
I also was able to communicate with Suffolk County DEC and
most of the Suffolk County EC's. Both the Big Apple VHF and
Suffolk County NTS traffic nets were on the air at their
scheduled time. This response is a credit to all the
training done by the RC's and their staff. Amateur Radio
received good remarks from the served agencies and did get
an article published in a number of newspapers as reported
by AP.  NLI ARES has much to do in the way of getting backup
power to some of the main repeaters. I have received and
replied to a number of e-mail's and phone calls from other
SM and SEC concerning NLI response to the blackout. I
continue to reply to questions from the ARRL CCE EC courses
and encourage them to join their local ARES EMCOMM group. I
did and interview with AP about the Blackout and had an
interview with ARRL HQ concerning the ARRL CCE EC program.

Transmitter hunting used to be a very popular activity on Long Island,
but lately interest has declined. We want to let you know that 2 meter
hunts have been sponsored and conducted by the Plaza Repeater Group
(146.640/Mineola) for at least the past 25 years. The hunts are normally
held in Nassau County, but we are willing to travel into Queens or
Suffolk if there is interest. It's an exciting activity and we think you'll
have a great time. For further information, contact Larry Berger,
WA2SUH at 516-223-4611, or e-mail at wa2suh@aol.com.
