HAPPENINGS

* From George Tranos N2GA, Section Manager
Fall is upon us and with it comes change.  Change is a good thing as it
signals the end of one phase and the start of another.  So it is with
the seasons of the year, radio propagation and life.  There will also
be a change in section leadership as I have decided not to seek
reelection as your section manager.  I've been section manager since
April 1998 and this is my ninth year in that capacity so it's time for
me to try some other things and let someone else try their hand at it.

Petitions for section manager were solicited and as of September 12,
only one petition was received at ARRL HQ for NLI.  That petition
came from Tom Carrubba KA2D, and as his was the only petition,
Tom was declared elected as the new NLI Section Manager!  His
term begins on January 1, 2007.

As you probably know, Tom is not new to our section - he currently
serves as Assistant Section Manager for NLI, Section Emergency
Coordinator and NLI webmaster.  So it's a natural process for Tom
to step forward and become section manager.

Tom served as a club president, has been involved in Ham Radio
University, been active in numerous emergency communications and
public service events including coordinating Amateur Radio support
for the World Trade Center disaster, has organized special event
stations, is an active DX'er and contester and is respected nationally
as well as locally.  I can think of no better person to be the new
section manager!

Please join me in congratulating Tom on his election and I urge each
of you to lend Tom your support for his upcoming term!

Ham Radio University 2007 will be held on Sunday, January 7, 2007,
at Briarcliffe College in Bethpage.   Neil Heft KC2KY, the new HRU
2007 chairman, is planning some interesting new things this year.
The HRU committee continues to welcome input from hams throughout
New York City and Long Island.  An initial HRU planning meeting was
held on Wednesday, September 20th.  The next planning meeting will be
held on Monday, October 16 at Babylon Town Hall starting at 7 pm.
All are welcome to attend.  For more information, see the HRU website at
http://www.HamRadioUniversity.org or contact HRU chairman Neil Heft
KC2KY at kc2ky@arrl.net

So, enjoy the fall season!  Get to those antenna projects you've been putting
off all summer before it gets too cold!  Participate in the upcoming contest
season, with the CQ WW DX SSB contest starting the season going the
weekend of October 28 and 29.  I'll be down in Grenada participating in
a multi-multi operation signing J3A for the sideband contest and QRV before
and after the contest as J3/N2GA, mostly on CW.  Please work me if you hear
me! And please send Tom KA2D along a note of congratulations and support.
Remember, change is good!

73, George

It's October, and time to think about JOTA, the annual
"Jamboree on the Air". It's officially the largest event in the
scouting movement, drawing close to half a million participants
worldwide. It's also one of the few officially sanctioned events
that involves the Girl Scouts and the Boy Scouts. JOTA is the
third full weekend in October - which this year is October 20-22.
There are many local scout leaders and councils in New York
City and Long Island. Chances are you will find adult leaders
who will be hosting JOTA stations locally. You can also look at
the "Scout Radio" reflector within Yahoo Groups. Many times
JOTA stations are located at local and regional Camporees and
jamborees where hundreds or thousands of scouts are in attendance.
The PIO (Public Information Officer) at the council office should
be very willing to work with you to promote JOTA. This link is
for the Greater New York Council of Boy Scouts
http://www.bsa-gnyc.org/, and the Greater NY Council of Girl Scouts
http://www.girlscoutsnyc.com.
The "Hello" brochure is an ideal handout, especially to adult
leaders who are always looking for new opportunities for their scouts.
Make sure to have plenty of  them (see www.arrl.org\pio). It's the
perfect "ice-breaker" to explain ham radio. Work with the Scout
PR people to produce a joint media release and PR campaign.
The Boy Scouts offer a radio merit badge which has "ham radio"
as one of its 7 elements.
To learn more about JOTA go to http://www.arrl.org/FandES/ead/jota.html
and http://www.scouting.org/international/22-218.html .

* Marty Miller NN2C, sk
As Secretary of the Long Island DX Association (LIDXA) it is
with much regret that I must report that our LIDXA
President, Marty Miller, NN2C, passed away yesterday Sept.
30.  Marty was very active in the LIDXA--being a member for over
25 years and President for 7 years.  He was a licensed ham
for over 30 years (first call was WB2VEX), and got into the
hobby by his older brother.  Besides his activities in the
LIDXA, Marty was President of the QCWA (Long Island-Chapter
81); an honorary member of the Mid-Florida DX Assn (MFDXA),
and very active in the Grumman Amateur Radio Club.  He would
regularly bring his new DXpedition videos down to LIDXA
meetings and was always trying out new software and hardware
in his station.  He loved the hobby with a fervor and would
relate to us, with gleeful excitement, his stories about
chasing down a new IOTA. Marty was very active in working DXCC
(Honor Roll Member), IOTA, and Lighthouses.  He was regular
attendee at the Dayton Hamvention and the IOTA Conference in England.
Marty was over 82 years young, and in 1999 was awarded an
honorary medal by the French Consul for his participation in
the D-Day invasion of Normandy.  73 to a great ham, compassionate
person, and a good friend.  "November, November, Two, Charlie"
will surely be missed by his stateside and DX buddies.
Ed Whitman, K2MFY
LIDXA Secretary

Lauren, Patrick, and Ryan. Former Assistant District Commissioner of Boy
Scouts of America. Proud Normandy World War II and Korean War veteran.

licensing class in their area. It also allows ARRL-registered
instructors to list their classes on the Web.  Visitors can search for
classes by ZIP code, ARRL Section or state.

Registered ARRL instructors can list their classes by visiting the

completed. The new page also links beginners and those planning to
upgrade to various resources, including ARRL's Now You're Talking! study
manual and the ARRL Exam Session Search page.

The ARES E-Letter to debut (Aug 11, 2005) -- Licensed League
members with ARRL Field Organization appointments involving
emergency communication or public service will be the first
to receive the debut issue of The ARES E-Letter! The premier
edition of the monthly national newsletter is set for
release Wednesday, August 17, and will publish on the third
Wednesday of each month after that. Since 9/11, interest
within the Amateur Radio community in emergency
communication and public service has greatly increased. More
than ever, hams are volunteering to help meet the
communication needs of our nation, states and communities.
The ARES E-Letter is a response to this expanding awareness.
Anyone with an interest in emergency communication or public
service activities can sign up online to receive The ARES
E-Letter. Each issue will contain a wealth of after-action
reports, editorials, technical tips, news and
views--information you'd otherwise have to wait for in QST.
Timeliness, utility and inspiration are the goals of this
informative publication that's devoted entirely to Amateur
Radio emergency communication and public service. Editing
the first issue is former long-time ARRL Headquarters staff
member Rick Palm, K1CE, who oversaw activities involving
ARRL Section Managers, the ARRL Field Organization and the
Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES). We invite
subscribers to share a copy with club newsletter editors or
with friends who may not be ARRL members but still might be
interested in receiving it. Those receiving the premier
edition also may opt out of getting further copies if they
wish. [from ARRL 08/11/05]

- K2LS DX-Packetcluster node available for DX spots
The K2LS DX-Packetcluster node, located in Merrick, NY,
is available on the Internet (Telnet) is  DXC.K2LS.COM, either
standard port 23, or port 7300. The K2LS node is filtered to pass
only spots from zones 1 thru 8, but, I can allow any combination
of spots/bands to be passed at the users request.  Some users connect
simultaneously with a different ssid,   i.e.  KA2D & KA2D-3, enabling
them to see both filtered and unfiltered information. The node also
filters all talk/chat from outside zones 1 thru 8.  For more information,
