October 2009 |
Hello! This is the October 2009 edition of the New York City-Long Island Section "e-Happenings" newsletter. This newsletter is here to serve the Amateur Radio community in our area. We welcome and encourage all submissions. Help make this your newsletter. We especially encourage NLI Radio clubs and Organizations to submit their meeting announcements, guest speakers and any special events. Please submit any information for the November issue prior to the end of October. Section News Section News is available ONLY on the world-wide-web. See the NLI site at: http://www.arrl.org/sections/?sect=NLI INCLUDED IN THIS ISSUE: * From Mike Lisenco N2YBB, Section Manager * From Jim Mezey W2FKV, ARES SEC * From Jim Minor W2DSX, NTS STM ************************************************************************ HAPPENINGS * From Mike Lisenco N2YBB, Section Manager It’s October, time for Fall Hamfest season and Yankee baseball! Along with the ALCS, this weekend provides us with the annual LIMARC Indoor Hamfest. Sunday, October 25, 2009 at Levittown Hall, 201 Levittown Parkway in Hicksville. Doors open at 7:00 am for vendors and 9 am for buyers. A VE session is scheduled for 12 noon. For more information, directions and talk-in frequency go to the LIMARC website at www.limarc.org. I will be at the ARRL table, so please stop by and say hi. ------ NLI HAS TWO HUDSON DIVISION AWARD WINNERS!!!! As I wrote in the previous newsletter, NLI has two winners this year: Diane Ortiz, K2DO has won the 2009 Grand Ole’ Ham Award and Jim Mezey, W2KFV, has won the 2009 Amateur of the Year Award. The awards will be presented at the annual Hudson Division Awards Dinner, which will take place this year on Sunday Afternoon, November 8, 2009 at Biagio's Restaurant, 299 Paramus Road, Paramus, NJ 07652 from 12:30pm – 4:30pm. The dinner is always a great event with participation from all Sections within the Division. The cost of a ticket is $50 (clubs can buy a table of 10 at the reduced price of $450) with profits from the dinner and advertising sales in the Awards Dinner Journal going to our Division Scholarship Fund and also to the ARRL Spectrum Defense Fund to preserve and protect our hobby/service. IT’S NOT TOO LATE TO ATTEND THIS GREAT EVENT! For more information, please contact Joyce Birmingham, KA2ANF, ARRL Vice Director, Hudson Division at ka2anf@arrl.org. ----- Once summer is over the planning for the annual NLI Section Convention goes into full gear. Ham Radio University 2011 will celebrate its eleventh year this coming January 10, 2010. HRU 2010 is "a day of education to share ideas, experiences, knowledge and fellowship among Amateur Radio operators.” Forums covering virtually every aspect of ham radio led by experts in the field will be available to anyone who attends. Last year, 30 clubs and organizations were represented and nearly 40 forums were attended by hundreds of hams from all over the region. The day culminates with a VE session for anyone wishing to take an exam. For more information, please go to the HRU website: www.hamradiouniversity.org ----- As a “new” Section Manager, I was invited to ARRL HQ for the weekend of September 24-27 for the annual orientation program for new SMs. 12 of us from all over the country participated in forums which were conducted by all of the HQ department heads covering many aspects of League management and what we are expected to do as Section Manager. It was a busy and tiring, but very enjoyable, 3 days at the League. ----- For those who missed it, the New York State QSO Party was held on October 17th. It was a 12 hour all mode contest. Unfortunately, I had family commitments for that day, so I was only able to participate for the first and last 2 hours. In that time I worked 30 counties and a number of states. It was fun being on the receiving end of a pile-up for a change. This was the first NY qso party in at least 25 years. Hats off to the Rochester DX Association for coordinating and running the event, and thanks to those clubs who sponsored it. Next year, ALL 12 HOURS!!! For more info on the event, go to: http://www.rdxa.com or www.nyqp.org ----- Congratulations to the Great South Bay ARC on their participation in the Babylon Beautification Society’s Country Fair on September 13th. The club provided communications support for the event and ran a special event station, generating both goodwill for and interest in amateur radio in the community. ----- Congratulations to Jack Hayne, WB2BED, for being recognized for his military service during the cold war in an hour-long ceremony at Farmingdale’s American Airpower Museum on October 3rd. An article appeared with some very nice photos in Newsday on October 4th. ----- AGAIN, THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT! PLEASE READ AND FOLLOW-UP WITH A LETTER!!! ARRL Seeks Member Support for HR 2160 To support HR 2160 -- The Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Enhancement Act of 2009 -- the ARRL is asking its membership to contact their members of the US House of Representatives with a request to become co-sponsors of this significant piece of legislation. Three new sponsors of the House bill have joined and a Senate version was introduced recently by Sen. Joe Lieberman (ID-CT), along with Senator Susan Collins (R-ME), introduced Senate Bill 1755, The Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Enhancement Act of 2009, which is similar to HR 2160. "Getting a bill successfully through Congress is a formidable task -- one that is going to require the involvement of every ARRL member," said ARRL Regulatory Information Manager Dan Henderson, N1ND. "Working with our Washington consulting firm Chwat & Co, we are laying a dynamic approach that will allow us to make our case most effectively. We have developed a strategy to maximize our impact when dealing with each member of Congress." Since the anthrax scare that followed the 9-11 attacks, all incoming mail to Congress is delayed anywhere from four to six weeks while it is screened. This means using normal US Mail is no longer an effective method of letting Congress hear your voice. While e-mail is convenient, it is not effective, due to the large volume of e-mail that each Congressional office receives. "To ensure that ARRL members' letters are quickly and expediently received by Congress, our strategy is to ask ARRL members send their letters directly to Chwat & Co," said Henderson. "Chwat's staff will sort the letters by Congressional district and hand-deliver them to the appropriate House offices, providing a direct point of contact with the Congressman and their staff. This personal contact gives us the chance to provide not only letters from constituents, but information from the ARRL on why this legislation is important." The ARRL has provided a sample letter for League members to personalize and send to their Congressional representative. For more information on the Act and the sample letter, go to: http://www.arrl.org/news/stories/2009/05/12/10818/?nc=1 ----- I will be a guest operator during the week of October 19-23 at the club station of the United Nations, 4U1UN. I will be operating RTTY and Phone as a participant in the 4U1UN Activity Week, designed primarily to give a new DXCC contact to all those who need it. The operator list is international in flavor, including: OH2BH, OH0XX, OH2NB, OH6LI, G3SXW, F5CWU, F4EGD, PY5EG, JK3GAD, UA9AB, LA5IIA LA4OFA, NN1N, K2QI, KA2RTD, K2LE, N2UN, N2GA, K2DO, N2YBB, KA2D, WQ2N and W2VQ. Activity will be from 8am until midnight local time (1200-0400 UTC) each day. All-night activity is planned for Friday the 23rd and Saturday the 24th of October. Some of the operators will form an international team for CQ World-Wide SSB Contest participation in the 'Two Transmitter' (M2) category. QSL via HB9BOU. LoTW upload will be done after the operation. ----- If you have a club event that you would like to publicize, please be sure to email me with all the particulars and I’ll place it in the eNewsletter. If it is short term, I can easily send out an email to the Section. Contact me at n2ybb@arrl.org with the particulars. ----- If you would like me to attend an upcoming meeting of your club, please email me at n2ybb@arrl.org and I'll be more than happy to set it up. ------ That's it for me this month.
