Welcome! This is the November edition of the NY City / Long Island "ehappenings" Section newsletter! This newsletter is here to serve the Amateur Radio community in our area. I welcome and encourage all submissions. Please help make this your newsletter! I especially encourage officers of the area's Amateur Radio clubs to submit their meeting announcements, guest speakers and special events. See the NLI site at: http://www.arrl.org/sections/?sect=NLI HAPPENINGS Section Emergency Coordinator Tom Carrubba KA2D named as ARRL Hudson Division Amateur of the Year. Tom will receive his award at the Hudson Division Awards Dinner on November 9 (see below). Congratulations Tom! Hudson Division Awards Dinner ticket deadline nears! The ARRL Hudson Division will hold its awards dinner on Saturday, Nov. 9. The event will be hosted by the 10-70 Repeater Association and will be held at Biagio's Ristorante in Paramus, New Jersey. Awards will be given for the Hudson Division Amateur of the Year, Grand Ole Ham, and Technical Achievement. Dinner includes an appetizer, a house salad, a choice of five entries, coffee and tea, dessert and unlimited soda. Dinner is $38 per person including gratuities and tax with unlimited soda. A cash bar will be available. The dinner will be from 7 to 11 PM. The next meeting for planning of the upcoming Ham Radio University 2003 will be held on Monday, November 11, in the Emergency Operations Center, Babylon Town Hall, North Lindenhurst, NY, starting at 7 PM. The initial meeting was held on Monday, October 14, and the date and location of HRU 2003 was confirmed. HRU 2003 is now scheduled for Sunday, January 19, 2003, at East Woods School, Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York. At the upcoming meeting, the focus will shift to the exact forum schedule, logistics and other aspects of HRU 2003. All are invited to attend. Please RSVP to n2ga@arrl.org if you will be attending. Please forward this meeting notice to anyone who you might think would be interested. Emergency Communications Level I course taken. Your Section Manager, Section Emergency Coordinator and three District Emergency Coordinators all took the ECC Level I course in October under the Homeland Security grant. From Tom Carrubba KA2D, Section Emergency Coordinator: New York City: Mark Phillips, KC2ENI, has been appointed PIO for NYC ARES. NYC ARES participated in the 9/11 Ceremony in NYC, ARRL President Haynie spoke to the group via internet voice linked repeater. NYC ARES continues to support Athons. Nassau County: George WA2WKV appointed the following as Emergency Coordinators in Nassau: Daniel Reisman NY2L and Joseph Schierer KC2BZB. Nassau ARES supported the Ocean to Sound Relay with over 1000 runners and 13 ARES members on Sept 29. An ARES presentation by WA2WKV and KA2YRY was given at South Shore fire Assoc. on Sept 27. Nassau ARES monthly meeting was held on Sept 10 At Nassau Red Cross. Nassau ARES held its SET with over 30 ARES members on Sept 14. Suffolk County: Islip, Babylon and Brookhaven ARES supported the MS Walk for a Cure on 9/22. John Alloca WB2LUA finalized the Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Guidelines, which were adopted by SC ARES. John also made the volunteer handout and radiograms as separate files so they can be printed separately. See www.larkfield.org (see ARES/RACES Information). John also has online ARES and RACES application forms online. John is also working on digital ID cards for SC ARES/RACES. SEC Tom KA2D was the guest speaker at a local club, topic was Emergency Communications and ARES. Tom spent most of this month was dedicated to completing the ARRL CCE Level 1 online course and completing installation of a 70 ft communications tower. With sponsorship from my local club, Tom has taken over a DX Cluster node, now W2GSB. Access is on RF, 145.670 or telnet://24.187.239.170. The node will be used for a conference node during emergencies. Plans are to connect node to existing packet network via UHF. This will give the node packet connectivity in NLI, ENY, NNJ and CT. Also on the planning table is a working VHF/UHF repeater linking system that will able to link eastern NLI, through Suffolk, Nassau and NYC with ENY to Albany, NY. He hopes to have a detailed report next month. Empire Slow Speed Net (ESS) 6pm daily on 3590 KHz . Hit and Bounce Net (HBN) 8:30am daily on 7042 KHz . Hit and Bounce Slow Net (HBSN) 7:30am daily on 3714 KHz (alternate freq. 7114 KHz).
