Topic: Backup and emergency power by Joe, N2ECR. All are
welcome. Signature: Adam Fine Title: EC Callsign: AB2IZ
Queens County; from Charles Gallo KC2IXE, Queens County EC
Here is the after action report (less timed log) for the
Queens JDRF Walkathon - We had 7 operators Charles
Gallo (KC2IXE) (Shadow 1), Charles Alfano (WA2GUG)
(Rest Area 1), Joe Albertus (KB2QLE) (Rest Area 2),
Harvey Fermaglich (N2EOI) (Floater 1), Steve Greenbaum
(WB2KDG) (Floater 2), Jacob Stockton (N2ZWV)
(Floater3/Bike1), Bernard Stein (K2ZIR) (Net Control).
We met at the Hall of Science at 8:30, and the net started
at 9:00am (give or take a few minutes), and the net shutdown
at about 1:30 - call it 35 hours of Public Service. The Net
was run on the Hall Of Science Repeater and was a
smooth net. No major problems with the ARES deployment
We handled 3 emergencies - The First was reported as a Young
Girl injured - variously reported as "fell out of Tree", "Walked
into Tree", but later turned out to be, stepped on a nail. We
reported the incident to JDRF, who had NYDP call EMS -
by the time any of our members got to the location, the
patient was taken care of and was on her way. Incident 2
was initially reported as a "Woman collapsed at the 5K mark".
As we had no initial reports as to condition, on my way to
talk to the JDRF rep, I informed the nearest NYPD rep to
dispatch the EMS cart. Jacob then arrived on scene, and it
turned out that the person was 1)Conscious, and 2)Responsive.
In fact, it was a case of a BAD charlie horse. Eventually, after
some wrangling, the EMS cart transported the individual back
to the start finish line. Incident 3 was when a woman got to
Rest Area 2, and could NOT complete the route due to
medical conditions. As the woman did not have a cell phone,
KB2QLE did not have his cell phone, and there were no working
pay phones in the area, we had net control call the woman's
son. There was no response. KB2QLE stayed with the woman until
JDRF was able to respond a vehicle to that location NOTE: JDRF
had NO sag vehicles, and it was only luck that we were able to get
a vehicle in to rest area 2. Rest Area was closed to security - we
had been told that we would NOT need a vehicle pass to
get to this area, but it turns out we did. Jacob did yeoman duty as
the only bike unit. Thank you! And yes, we all got wet.
Lessons: 1)Next Year, get vehicle permits for Rest 1. 2)Having Net
control away from the Start finish lead to a LOT more traffic on
the net (asking to go direct), but allowed him to keep his log in
the dry, and to make that call. 3)Bike units are GREAT - we
really could have used one or 2 more to patrol the course
Queens County ARES received a nice thank you letter from
JDRF.
Nassau County; from Mario Maltese WF2T: On September 9th,
ARES held a debriefing meeting regarding the August
14th Blackout, and preparation for the SET. On September
14th, the Ocean to Sound Relay Race supported by 12 operators.
On the 17th and 18th, an activation occurred in anticipation of
Hurricane Isabelle, and 13 amateurs were involved: one shelter
was opened at the Nassau Community College.
Suffolk County: from Tom KA2D: Members of Town of
Babylon ARES responded to a drill at Republic Airport,
Farmingdale NY on Sept 13. this drill was a joint drill with
Bradley Field, CT. The purpose of the drill was to
activate commercial helicopters to transport medical supplies
into the affected area (Bradley Field). This was not a planned
drill and the Long Island EMCOMM group had no prior
knowledge of the drill. Tom KA2D received a telephone call
from the CT EMCOMM group requesting participation in
this drill. Tom KA2D notified the local EC KA2RGI and
AEC N2UHR. In about 30 minutes members of Town of
Babylon ARES were was on the air with a Net, EOC active
with the EC responding to Republic Airport to meet with the
CT EMCOMM group leader at Republic Airport. They
checked in with the IC on site and set up the requested
communications. Amateur Radio task was to relay the helo's
ID numbers to the CT. They could not establish communications
of either BHF, UHF or HF. In site of this shortcomings, we
received a good report from OEM, Republic Airport Fire and
Police. Our response was quick and complete. The drill was
secured at 12:00 NOON.
SEC; Participated in the CT/Long Island drill on Sept 13.
This drill reinforced the need for a linked repeater system
to establish section wide or inter section communications.
We have had much resistance to block this system in our
area.

Congratulations and welcome back to the Long Island DX Association
for renewing as an ARRL affiliated club!
LI QRP club meeting on Saturday, November 8 in Centerport.
The Long Island QRP Club will meet on Saturday, November 8, 2003,
at Nicky's of Centerport, 6 Little Neck Road, Centerport, Long Island,
NY (telephone: 631-757-7277). We'll start gathering at 12:00 and some
of us will probably hang around until at least 2:30 p.m. Nicky's is a
moderately priced restaurant. You can have a complete meal for
under $10. Bring friends, family, and stuff for show-and-tell, or just
bring yourself. Nicky's provides us with plenty of space for people
and gear. Please forward this message to anyone who might be
interested in joining us. If you arrive late, look for us in the little
park across the street from Nicky's. If the weather is unusually
warm, we may string up an antenna and try out a rig or two. If the
weather is prohibitive, we have been known to make contacts from
inside the restaurant using an indoor antenna! If you plan to arrive
by train, let me know and we'll pick you up and get you back to
the station at the appropriate time. Hope to see you then! 73 and
72, Jeff WB5GWB. wb5gwb@arrl.net
Transmitter hunting used to be a very popular activity on Long Island,
but lately interest has declined. We want to let you know that 2 meter

held in Nassau County, but we are willing to travel into Queens or
Suffolk if there is interest. It's an exciting activity and we think you'll
have a great time. For further information, contact Larry Berger,
