Submitted by George Tranos N2GA, Chairman, Ham Radio University 2005 * From Tom Carrubba KA2D, Section Emergency Coordinator New York City District - DEC Michael Lisenco N2YBB: September saw the end of the Republican National Convention. Thankfully, our stand-by status did not have to change to active. As such, while we were fully capable of supplying our clients with the manpower they needed, we were able to continue with our daily lives without interruption. The month also saw the beginning of the Fall 2004 "A-Thon" season. Manhattan had their second biathlon of the year and Brooklyn had three events throughout the month. We also participated in the third annual 9/11 Memorial Service at the site of the World Trade Center as communicators for the Red Cross. October is shaping up to be a busy month with events each weekend at the resumption of the Red Cross class schedule. John Healy, KA2ABV, EC Manhattan: Next New York County ARES meeting - 10/23/04 at 6:30pm We will show a video presentation on Hurricanes and will discuss various scenarios in the event a hurricane hits our area. The meeting location is the American Red Cross of Greater New York, 150 Amsterdam Avenue. Joe Nieves N2TEE; EC Richmond County N2TEE was net control for a Monday Nite ARES net with KB2KAB as backup. Richmond County ARES is performing a Technician training class at Saint Vincent's Hospital. Due to the tireless efforts of Ira Lipson, N2KB, one of the hospital's directors, a grant was secured from the hospital's board. With books and supplies reimbursed by the hospital, a total of eleven hospital employees have begun training for their Technician license. These future hams are dedicating two hours per week of their after hours time to complete the 10-12 week course. This long term effort helps solidify our commitment to community service and promoting our radio hobby. I would like to thank the following ARES members for coordinating and teaching the course material: W2KMA, WA2RF, KB2KAB, KC2CYE. Towards the end of October, we will be having an ARES meeting at a new location. Information will be forthcoming shortly. On September 11th, Nassau ARES was present at a Local Fair in Lynbrook commemorating 9/11. Nine operators attended, and one new member joined.September 12th DEC George Gluck hosted an ARES table at the LIMARC hamfest, recruiting another member. The monthly meeting on September 14th was a working one at the Red Cross Chapter, where the 19 participating members broke off into work groups to prepare some of the new ham radio equipment donated to the Red Cross, programming the radios, testing the new 200W generator, preparing cables, etc. The ARES vests received by the Section by the ARRL grant, received from Section Manager George Tranos N2GA, were distributed at that time to the operators with the most hours posted to the Service Log. Nine operators supported the "MS Pooch Walk" on September 19th, and 15 operators supported the 50 mile "Ocean To Sound" Relay Race on September 26th, which included APRS coverage from the last vehicle. It was a busy month, with over 246 man hours posted. See the Monthly Newsletter for additional. Suffolk County - Bill Schiebel N2NFI, DEC SC: No additional comments Walter M. Wenzel, KA2RGI, EC Town of Babylon: No additional comments John A. Allocca, WB2LUA EC, Town of Huntington: The Suffolk NTS net is out of our range. Therefore, we make contact with the Nassau County NTS net. We provided communications for the Cow Harbor Run Saturday September 18th (7am to noon). This was an extremely difficult event as very heavy cold rain flooded the course and 4,500 or so runners had to race along hilly streets with ankle to knee depth rushing water. The SAG vehicle could not follow the runners to the end of the course because the water was too deep to drive through. There were no adverse incidents reported although there were a few cases of hypothermia. Some of our operators put the runners with hypothermia in their cars with the heat on. They all warmed up well and went home. Don Fisher, N2QHV, EC Town of Southold: Southold ARES participated in the Millwood Power Plant Drill form Southold EOC. Official report to follow.
