New York City District - DEC Michael Lisenco N2YBB:
September saw the end of the Republican National Convention.
Thankfully, our stand-by status did not have to change to
active.  As such, while we were fully capable of supplying
our clients with the manpower they needed, we were able to
continue with our daily lives without interruption.
The month also saw the beginning of the Fall 2004 "A-Thon"
season.  Manhattan had their second biathlon of the year and
Brooklyn had three events throughout the month.
We also participated in the third annual 9/11 Memorial
Service at the site of the World Trade Center as
communicators for the Red Cross.
October is shaping up to be a busy month with events each
weekend at the resumption of the Red Cross class schedule.

John Healy, KA2ABV, EC Manhattan:
Next New York County ARES meeting - 10/23/04 at 6:30pm
We will show a video presentation on Hurricanes and will
discuss various scenarios in the event a hurricane hits our
area. The meeting location is the American Red Cross of
Greater New York, 150 Amsterdam Avenue.

Joe Nieves N2TEE; EC Richmond County
N2TEE was net control for a Monday Nite ARES net with
KB2KAB as backup. Richmond County ARES is performing
a Technician training class at Saint Vincent's Hospital.  Due to
the tireless efforts  of Ira Lipson, N2KB, one of the hospital's
directors, a grant was secured from the hospital's board.
With books and supplies reimbursed by the hospital, a total
of eleven hospital employees have begun training for their
Technician license.  These future hams are dedicating two
hours per week of their after hours time to complete the
10-12 week course.  This long term effort helps solidify our
commitment to community service and promoting our radio
hobby. I would like to thank the following ARES members for
coordinating and teaching the course material: W2KMA,
WA2RF, KB2KAB, KC2CYE. Towards the end of October,
we will be having an ARES meeting at a new location.
Information will be forthcoming shortly.

that morning with a deluge of rain, all Kings County ARES members
that volunteered for this event showed up and were greeted
with clear skies just prior to the event.  Turnout of the

ARES was sky high.  Thanks go out to: AB2IZ, KC2EDR, KC2HMS,
KC2JOX, KC2JXM, KC2LYT, KC2MBV, N2ECR, WA2JNF and W2DEA
Chris Hoban  5K Memorial Run - 09/19/04
One of many first time events for Kings County ARES, we were
able to participate this year in the 16th annual running of
this event.  The course, which runs along Shore Parkway in

of New York harbor from the Narrows out to Liberty Island.
ARES members that assisted in the event were: AB2IZ, KA2KDQ,
KB2SUR, KC2EDR, KC2HMS, KC2JOX, KC2JXM and W2/8R1B.
Music That Heals 5K - 09/26/04:
Kings County ARES participated in the 7th annual running of
this event, which raises funds to help bring music to
seriously ill children in NYC hospitals.  This event was run
in Prospect Park and 14 ARES members participated including:

KC2LYT, KC2MHY, N2ECR, W2/8R1B, W2DEA, and WA2JNF.
A special thanx to Rich, WA2MNR, who came out from Manhattan
to help us with this event.  Kings County ARES meeting - 09/01/04

Kings County ARES has a weekly net, every Sunday at 8PM.  We
meet on the W2CMA repeater (446.675/-5MHz/114.8) in order to
discuss issues of relevance to the ARES community at large
and Kings County ARES specifically.  We welcome, encourage
and invite all amateur radio operators to participate.
Kings County ARES can be found on the web.  Visit us at
www.kingscountyares.org. Thanks to Mitch (N2RGA) for all the
hard work he puts into the site on an almost daily basis.
Our heartfelt sympathies go out to, Mitch (N2RGA), Amanda
(KC2NHE) and the Cohen family on the passing of Barbara
wife/mother.  This courageous woman lost her battle with
colon cancer on September 23rd, 2004.  Mitch is an OES and
Kings County ARES Webmaster.
The next meeting will be on Wednesday, October 20th, 2004 at
7:30pm.  The location is UCP 121 Lawrence Street, between
Ocean Parkway and Seton Place Brooklyn, NY.

Nassau County - Mario Maltese WF2T; EC Nassau County
(for George Gluck, DEC, WA2WKV).  On September 11th,
Nassau ARES was present at a Local Fair in Lynbrook
commemorating 9/11. Nine operators attended, and one new
member joined.September 12th DEC George Gluck hosted an ARES
table at the LIMARC hamfest, recruiting another member. The
monthly meeting on September 14th was a working one at the
Red Cross Chapter, where the 19 participating members broke
off into work groups to prepare some of the new ham radio
equipment donated to the Red Cross, programming the radios,
testing the new 200W generator, preparing cables, etc. The
ARES vests received by the Section by the ARRL grant,
received from Section Manager George Tranos N2GA, were
distributed at that time to the operators with the most
hours posted to the Service Log. Nine operators supported
the "MS Pooch Walk" on September 19th, and 15 operators
supported the 50 mile "Ocean To Sound" Relay Race on
September 26th, which included APRS coverage from the last
vehicle. It was a busy month, with over 246 man hours
posted. See the Monthly Newsletter for additional.

John A. Allocca, WB2LUA EC, Town of Huntington:
The Suffolk NTS net is out of our range. Therefore, we make
contact with the Nassau County NTS net. We provided
communications for the Cow Harbor Run Saturday September
18th (7am to noon). This was an extremely difficult event as
very heavy cold rain flooded the course and 4,500 or so
runners had to race along hilly streets with ankle to knee
depth rushing water. The SAG vehicle could not follow the
runners to the end of the course because the water was too
deep to drive through. There were no adverse incidents
reported although there were a few cases of hypothermia.
Some of our operators put the runners with hypothermia in
their cars with the heat on. They all warmed up well and
went home.

Don Fisher, N2QHV, EC Town of Southold:
Southold ARES participated in the Millwood Power Plant Drill
form Southold EOC. Official report to follow.

Larfield ARC Special Event station on Sunday, November 7.
Sunday is the date of our Ham Radio Demonstration at the
"SeniorCare Assisted Living Center in Lynbrook."
We will be on the air 10am - 2pm operating 20m.
Our objective is to set up and operate a HF ham station in the
casual/snack lounge area of the SeniorCare Center.  Sunday is the day
when the resident's family usually visit and we're there to show-off ham
radio and (hopefully) spark some interest among those who stop by.
Visitors will include resident's Sons, Daughters, Grandkids, Friends,
maybe some other area hams and us.  Please take some time out of your
day to ride over (bring a friend/spouse and/or ride in with another
Larkfielder) and join us.  Coffee, tea, juice, soda, and snacks will be
available continuously, but save some room for the banquet lunch to
which we're being treated, so just come on down!  The SeniorCare
Center on the Eastbound side of Sunrise Hwy on Freer St. in Lynbrook:.
Turn up into SeniorCare driveway to access the on-site parking garage.
(watch out for your rooftop antennas in the garage or try street parking)
The SeniorCare Assisted Living Center is administered by our fellow
Larkfielder, Jim Schmidt KB2ZBY.  Jim, of couse, will be there and
besides the ham radio fun, this would be a terrific opportunity to seek
answers to any questions you may have regarding any aspect of an
assisted living environment.  Jim is an expert an will be happy to show
off his facility as well as explain "assisted living" programs in
general.  There is a considerable uniqueness to his facility and there
is much to look for and much to avoid if "assisted living" might be a
part of the future of someone you know. If you have any questions,
RSVP to me or come down on Nov. 7.  This is not just for hams, all
are welcomed!  Briggs Longbothum, AB2NJ -  ab2nj@arrl.net
