Our public service event schedule reactivated after a summer lull. We held our SET on Saturday, September 24, 2005. Using a blackout scenario, we combined the emergency power (no a/c) ARRL drill of the prior week with the annual SET, normally scheduled for the first weekend in October. Participation was extensive throughout the boroughs, and we utilized the EOC at the American Red Cross in Greater New York for our command post. Locally, the Bronx announced the appointment of John, N2NSA as AEC. And once again (on a continuing basis), our own Mitch, N2RGA has performed a yeoman's task in coordinating and maintaining the District website, as well as picking up webmaster duties for the new NYC RACES website. A big thank you to both gentlemen. Plans for the near future include a drill involving packet/Winlink 2000 and an in-house EC-001 self-study course culminating in a qualified exam session. John Healy, KA2ABV, EC New York County No report Joe Nieves N2TEE; EC Richmond County: No Additional Comments Charles Gallo KC2V; EC Queens County No additional comment. On September 18th at the request of Hudson Division Director Frank Fallon N2FF, KA2D hosted a press conference for Congressman Steve Israel (D-NY). Congressman Israel re-introduced the Amateur radio Emergency Communications Consistency Act. See http://www.arrl.org/news/stories/2005/09/23/7/?nc=1 for details of this import bill. This bill could make it easier for radio amateurs living in communities with deed covenants, conditions and restrictions (CC&Rs) to erect suitable antennas. KA2D had the pressure of demonstrating the capabilities of amateur radio to the Congressman and the press. Congressman Israel had a QSO with Fred K2CVS on the 147.00 repeater with KA2D as control operator. Hudson Division Director N2FF fielded questions from the press. It is now up to the amateur radio community to write the congressional representatives to support this bill. I continue to monitor our fellow amateur radio volunteers supporting the recovery in the Gulf Coast. * From Jim Minor W2DSX, Section Traffic Manager I wish to thank Claire WA2VZK, Paul KC2LEV and Les KB2ZHF for their efforts in keeping the Suffolk County VHF running recently, as well as the many operators I didn't mention here. I'm trying to find "guideline" on "guying" as it would commonly apply for hams use. Maybe I'm suffering from major brain cramps, but I can't seem to find this valuable information anywhere. I'm not talking about the serious calculations needed for erecting and guying towers with heavy topgear, but more like for guying the 20-30ft mast mounted stuff (maybe 20-30lbs max) we would use for Field Day or portable operations. How does one determine when, how, and where to guy a mast properly to keep his stuff in the air and off the ground in moderate gusts? I expected to find this easily on the League's website, but searching under "guying" "antenna guying" and similar keywords hasn't turned up much of anything helpful. Any ideas? I'd like to collate and condense whatever guidelines/info I can find and share it widely for the many that can benefit from it. It would be nice help avoid disasters and potential injury. Thanks in advance and regard to all, Briggs Longbothum, AB2NJ (Please reply to Briggs at ab2nj@arrl.net) * Nassau ARC supports the Scout Jamboree on the air The Nassau Amateur Radio Club hosted the Boy Scout Jamboree on the air at its headquarters in the special activity center in Eisenhower Park in East Meadow on October 16th. The event was attended by 20 cub scouts, 9 boy scouts and approximately 25 scout leaders and parents. The event included both on-the-air operation by the scouts, using voice and PSK31 (which was the most popular mode), screenings of the ARRL video "Amateur Radio Today" and Morse Code demonstrations. Also present was Merit Badge counselor bob Batchelor KC2MWA who certified 4 scouts in the radio merit badge. He also certified that the cub scouts attended for the JOTA patch. Patches were donated by NARC President Lance Aue KA2EJD. The event was "very successful" according to Lance. Submitted by Lance Aue KA2EJD * NY City Marathon on November 6th utilizes ham radio volunteers The New York Marathon is around the corner. This year, the marathon will be held on Sunday, November 6th. Ham radio has been an important part of this race using over 400 hams - this year the roles have been expanded. If you ever wanted to participate in an event that also gives good practice for ARES/RACES and emergency service this is it. Equipment needed is a dual band h/t (single band for most assignments) and a spare battery, I would also reccomend a hand mike or headset (I prefer a headset, single ear of course- MFJ makes a good one for most radios for under $25) If you are at all interested contact Steve W2ML at W2ML@arrl.org You will get a special tee shirt, a rain poncho and credentials for your position as well as a nifty orange baseball cap... what more could you ask for? (Submitted by George Gluck WA2WKV). * ARES to the rescue (by Laura Rudin KB2VDV) The day was October 23, 2005. It was cold and very windy. I (KB2VDV Laura) volunteered to participate in the Deborah Hospital Four-Mile Run a few weeks earlier. My morning started out just like any other day. My usual routine was to go downstairs and meet Mitchell, n2rga. We always eat breakfast at the neighborhood bagel store. Then off we went to the event. As the clocked ticked we all gather at the assigned meeting place. I was deployed to the 69th St. Pier in Bay Ridge to assist with providing communications with the ambulance. The ocean was very rough and choppy. The runners and walkers were lining up. As I was standing near the ambulance, I saw a young father walking with his two children. I noticed he had a plastic container with a turtle, Red Eared Slider, in it. This caught my attention. My naturalist and humanitarian instincts kicked in full drive. As I have raised turtles for years. I turned around to watch him and I asked him "what are you going to do". He said he was going to put the turtle in the ocean. I was appalled. I walked over to him and explained that "This is a fresh water turtle and the ocean is salt water". He then realized it would not survive if he was to deposit the turtle in the ocean. I asked him if I can have it. So the man handed me the turtle and I thanked him. He took off in a hurry with his two children along with the container. I walked back to the area of deployment. I continued my duties as an ARES member holding a turtle in my hand keeping me company. Soon after that, I secured and walked back to the Start/Finish point. I met up with the other members of my group. I was greeted by Tony, kc2jxm, and Mitchell, n2rga. They were surprised and asked me where I got that. So I explained! "They never know what I am up to next!" We quickly got a cardboard box and put it in the backseat of Mitchell's car. I asked all of the ARES members if they want a turtle for a pet. No one wanted it. So I decide to ask Mitchell, my dear buddy, to take me to Prospect Park so I can set the turtle free in the lake were many Red Eared Sliders live all year round. They are also monitored and watched by the NYC Dept. of Parks. Mitchell and I did just that. I placed the turtle on the ground just like Steve, kc2krx, suggested. The turtle walked into the pond and disappeared. Mitchell and I watched the water to see where turtle swam. I noticed a little head sticking out of the water approx. 7 feet away. Then the turtle went under t he water again and swam away. I know now that the turtle is amongst many of her/his own kind now. It will learn to survive on its own. That was my plan and I carried it out to make sure this reptile will be free and safe. Hopefully this turtle will live a long healthy life. Not only do ARES members volunteer to participate in events to enable, exercise and sharpen our emergency communication skills. If we encounter any injustice, we try and do the right thing. * UPCOMING Club Events NOTE - As usual, please check with the club to verify the date and time of all events. CHECK with the CLUB! The new page also links beginners and those planning to upgrade to various resources, including ARRL's Now You're Talking! study manual and the ARRL Exam Session Search page. http://www.arrl.org/arrlvec/examsearch.phtml Newcomers may also want to visit the "Welcome to Amateur Radio" page on the ARRL Web site. http://www.arrl.org/hamradio.html "We're very excited about this new feature that makes it easier for prospective hams to find a class so that they can earn their Amateur Radio license," said ARRL Affiliated Club and Mentor Program Manager Norm Fusaro, W3IZ. The ARES E-Letter to debut (Aug 11, 2005) -- Licensed League members with ARRL Field Organization appointments involving emergency communication or public service will be the first to receive the debut issue of The ARES E-Letter! The premier edition of the monthly national newsletter is set for release Wednesday, August 17, and will publish on the third Wednesday of each month after that. Since 9/11, interest within the Amateur Radio community in emergency communication and public service has greatly increased. More than ever, hams are volunteering to help meet the communication needs of our nation, states and communities. The ARES E-Letter is a response to this expanding awareness. Anyone with an interest in emergency communication or public service activities can sign up online to receive The ARES E-Letter. Each issue will contain a wealth of after-action reports, editorials, technical tips, news and views--information you'd otherwise have to wait for in QST. Timeliness, utility and inspiration are the goals of this informative publication that's devoted entirely to Amateur Radio emergency communication and public service. Editing the first issue is former long-time ARRL Headquarters staff member Rick Palm, K1CE, who oversaw activities involving ARRL Section Managers, the ARRL Field Organization and the Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES). We invite subscribers to share a copy with club newsletter editors or with friends who may not be ARRL members but still might be interested in receiving it. Those receiving the premier edition also may opt out of getting further copies if they wish.
