ARRL NYC/LI November E-happenings Newsletter Written and Edited by George Tranos N2GA, ARRL Section Manager NYC/LI -- Welcome! This is the November edition of the NY City / Long Island "ehappenings" Section newsletter! This newsletter is here to serve the Amateur Radio community in our area. I welcome and encourage all submissions. Please help make this your newsletter! I especially encourage officers of the area's Amateur Radio clubs to submit their meeting announcements, guest speakers and special events. Please submit any information for the December issue prior to the end of November. November 2006 is the 67th regular edition since this newsletter was inaugurated in March, 2001. Section News Section News is available ONLY on the world-wide-web. See the NLI site at: http://www.arrl.org/sections/?sect=NLI IN THIS ISSUE: * From George Tranos N2GA, Section Manager * From Tom Carrubba KA2D, Section Emergency Coordinator * From Jim Minor W2DSX, Section Traffic Manager * Rich Rosner N2STU appointed new NLI Technical Coordinator * BARA to host Hudson Division Awards Dinner on November 11 * UPCOMING Club Events * Other "stuff" * NLI Section Website: http://hudson.arrl.org/nli HAPPENINGS * From George Tranos N2GA, Section Manager I can't believe it's November already! Summer is but a distant memory now and will be fast upon us. Fall is a beautiful season here in the northeast and I hope you can enjoy the last rays of warm sunshine before the cold comes and the snow begins to fall. With the cooler weather comes the heart of the contest season. The CQ Worldwide DX sideband contest was last weekend and I hope you had a chance to participate. I was on the air from Grenada as part of the J3A team. We had six operators and worked over 9400 QSO's during the contest! Sunspots or not, contests sure bring out activity on the bands! For those of you who thought ten meters was surely dead at this point of the cycle, there was a resounding "yes" when asked if it was still alive! Down at J3A, we worked 84 different countries on 10 meters and 1228 contacts! It was great fun being part of successful contest DX-pedition and I would encourage each of you with aspirations to be DX to go ahead and do it - you won't be sorry! November continues contest season with the CW Sweepstakes contest this weekend starting at 4 pm on Saturday. It continues through the month with Sweepstakes phone and then CQ WW DX CW on the weekend after Thanksgiving. Get on, give outs some points, work some new states or countries and have fun! There's been a lot of controversy surrounding the American Red Cross requiring its volunteers to submit to background checks. While ARRL headquarters has said it is up to each individual ham to decide whether they want to voluntarily participate in this process, NLI ARES leaders are suggesting otherwise. Mike Lisenco N2YBB, DEC for NY City, says "I am asking that NO ONE comply with the Red Cross at this time." Mike goes on to say that the Red Cross has hired a private vendor to conduct these checks and that the vendor, through their website, asks that the volunteer provide personal information that allows the vendor to check their criminal history, check their credit history and check their "mode of living." Mike continues "please understand that while you are free to do so if you wish, I would much prefer that we present a united front." Stay tuned for on this topic in the future. Don't forget that the NLI Section Convention is coming up in January! Ham Radio University 2007 will be held on Sunday, January 7, 2007, at Briarcliffe College in Bethpage. Neil Heft KC2KY, the new HRU 2007 chairman, is planning some interesting new things this year. The HRU committee continues to welcome input from hams throughout New York City and Long Island. The next planning meeting will be held on Monday, November 13 at Briarcliffe College Cafeteria in Bethpage starting at 7:30 pm. All are welcome to attend. For more information, see the HRU website at http://www.HamRadioUniversity.org or contact HRU chairman Neil Heft KC2KY at kc2ky@arrl.net I will be the guest speaker at the Larkfield ARC November meeting on Thursday, November 9. The meeting is held at the John J. Flanagan Memorial Activity Center (The old Village Green School) which is located at 423 Park Ave, in Huntington. I will be talking about my recent J3A Contest DX-pedition and the upcoming Ham Radio University 2007. I hope you can come down to the meeting. So, enjoy the fall season! Get to those antenna projects you've been putting off all summer before it gets too cold! Participate in the upcoming contest season, with November Sweepstakes CW this weekend. Please work me if you hear me! Lastly, since both Veteran's day and Thanksgiving are this month, please take some time to be thankful for all you have. Here in America, we are blessed with a wealth of resources and the freedom to enjoy them. Let us never forget the blood and sweat that our forefathers shed to achieve this. Let us give thanks for all we have and remember the sacrifices of our veterans. 73, George * From Tom Carrubba KA2D, Section Emergency Coordinator Tom thanks all ARES volunteers for their involvement. The ARES E-Letter to debut (Aug 11, 2005) -- Licensed League members with ARRL Field Organization appointments involving emergency communication or public service will be the first to receive the debut issue of The ARES E-Letter! The premier edition of the monthly national newsletter is set for release Wednesday, August 17, and will publish on the third Wednesday of each month after that. Since 9/11, interest within the Amateur Radio community in emergency communication and public service has greatly increased. More than ever, hams are volunteering to help meet the communication needs of our nation, states and communities. The ARES E-Letter is a response to this expanding awareness. Anyone with an interest in emergency communication or public service activities can sign up online to receive The ARES E-Letter. Each issue will contain a wealth of after-action reports, editorials, technical tips, news and views--information you'd otherwise have to wait for in QST. Timeliness, utility and inspiration are the goals of this informative publication that's devoted entirely to Amateur Radio emergency communication and public service. Editing the first issue is former long-time ARRL Headquarters staff member Rick Palm, K1CE, who oversaw activities involving ARRL Section Managers, the ARRL Field Organization and the Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES). We invite subscribers to share a copy with club newsletter editors or with friends who may not be ARRL members but still might be interested in receiving it.
