Welcome!  This is the December edition of the NY City / Long Island
"ehappenings" Section newsletter!  This newsletter is here to serve
the Amateur Radio community in our area.  I welcome and
encourage all submissions.  Please help make this your newsletter!
I especially encourage officers of the area's Amateur Radio clubs to
submit their meeting announcements, guest speakers and special
events. Please submit any information for the January issue prior
to the end of December.

HAPPENINGS

Hudson Division Awards Dinner held on November 9.
The ARRL Hudson Division held its awards dinner on
Saturday, Nov. 9.  The event was hosted by the 10-70 Repeater
Association and was held at Biagio's Ristorante in Paramus,
New Jersey.  Awards were given for the Hudson Division
Amateur of the Year, Grand Ole Ham, and Technical Achievement.
Section Emergency Coordinator Tom Carrubba KA2D was
presented with the award as ARRL Hudson Division Amateur
of the Year.   Tom was introduced and presented his plaque
by SM George Tranos N2GA, who nominated him for the award.
Dave Watrous WD2K, of Schodack Landing, New York, was
named as Hudson Division Grand Ole Ham.  Receiving the
award for Dave was Eastern New York Section Manager
Peter Cecere N2YJZ.   Tom Marin W2RN, of Wood Ridge,
New Jersey, was presented the award for Technical Achievement.

Ham Radio University 2003 planning meeting set for December 9.
The next meeting for planning of the upcoming Ham Radio University
2003 will be held on Monday, December 9, at East Woods School
Oyster Bay, NY, starting at 7 PM.  Two planning meetings have
been held to date with most of the logistics now in place for
the fourth annual HRU.  HRU 2003 is scheduled for Sunday,
January 19, 2003, at East Woods School, Oyster Bay, Long Island,
New York.  At the upcoming meeting, final planning of the schedule,
logistics and other aspects of HRU 2003 will be discussed.  All are
invited to attend. Please RSVP to n2ga@arrl.org if you will be attending.

New York City: NYC continues to support A-Thon events
including the10/13 Staten Island Half Marathon, the 10/19
Waterfront Festival (St. George), the10/20 NYC Diabetes
Walk (Riverside Park), the 10/20 Multiple Sclerosis NY/NJ
100 mile Bike Tour. Red Cross Training continues.
Nassau County: October 29, Nassau ARES provided
communications for the ADA's annual boardwalk walkathon.
Participants included: K2KYQ Joe, K2LJH Sid, KA2YRY Dave,
KC2BZB Joe, WB2HPI George, WB2GTC George,
N2ICD Tony, KC2E Ed, and WA2WKV George.
Suffolk County: Suffolk ARES participated in the 10/26
Township of Babylon SET and the 10/27 Suffolk County
Special Olympics.  SEC Tom KA2D on 10/26, participated in
local township SET. SET in NLI for 2002 was very disappointing.
We will improve for 2003. Still in planning stage; a working
VHF/UHF repeater linking system that will able to link
eastern NLI, through Suffolk, Nassau and NYC with ENY to
Albany, NY. NLI packet network continues to expand.

NYS/E     7pm local time daily
NYS/L    10pm local time daily
All our "section level" cw nets meet on 3677 KHz .

2)NTS "section level" phone nets:
New York Phone (NYP) 1pm daily
(currently meeting on 7237 KHz but usually meets on 3925 KHz during
the winter months.)
New York Public Operations Net (NYPON) 5pm daily on 3913 KHz
(alternate freq. 3925 KHz +/- QRM).
3)"Independent nets" which maintain close association with the NTS.
Empire Slow Speed Net (ESS) 6pm daily on 3590 KHz .

Hit and Bounce Net  (HBN) 8:30am daily on 7042 KHz .
Hit and Bounce Slow Net  (HBSN) 7:30am daily on 3714 KHz (alternate
freq. 7114 KHz).
New York City -Long Island cw net (NLI) 7:30pm Mon. through Fri. on
3630 KHz .
(all times listed are local eastern times)

4)The NTS "local nets" are:
Big Apple Net  8pm daily on 146.430 MHz
Nassau Co. VHF Net  7:30pm on 146.805 MHz (meeting irregularly at
present).
Suffolk Co. VHF Net  8pm (Mon. through Thurs.) on 145.210 MHz.

Public Information Officers or anyone interested in public

SM George Tranos N2GA QRV from Grenada in November.
George was part of the J3A multi-multi contest team during the
CQ WW CW Contest on November 23 and 24, QSL J3A via
WA1S.  George was active outside the contest as J3/N2GA on SSB
and CW from November 18 through 22. All QSL requests for J3/N2GA
should go via the N2GA callbook address.

MetroCor is the new coordinating body for the New York
City metropolitan area. See their website at

MetroCor has asked the the following News Release be published:
December 1,2002 will be the "cut off" date for repeater systems
(that were formerly coordinated by TSARC as well as current
existing systems since 1996) to file with MetroCor, so that we
may meet the publishing deadlines of the various repeater directories.
If you have not yet filed coordination application(s) with MetroCor,
please go to http://www.qsl.net/metrocor/ to download the required
forms and mail them to the address posted on our web site.  If this
is not done we will be forced to list your repeater as uncoordinated.

The 4th annual Skywarn Recognition Day will be held on
Saturday, December 7, from 0000-2400 UTC (Friday 7:00 pm
- Saturday 7:00 pm). The National Weather Service in Upton
will once again be participating, with amateurs from a number
of area clubs operating station K2U.  We will be operating
on the following bands...10, 15, 20, 40 and 80 meters.  We
also hope to operate on 2 meters via Echolink, using the
K2SPD repeater (145.310 mHz), courtesy of the Suffolk
Police ARC. If you'd like to join us at the NWS office office
to work the event, please email Tom Carrubba KA2D at
ka2d@arrl.net no later than Tuesday, December 3rd, as we
must provide a visitors list to Brookhaven Labs Security. 
If not, please be sure to work K2U during the event.

Ham Radio University 2003 planning meeting set for December 9.
The next meeting for planning of the upcoming Ham Radio University
