George Tranos has held the SM position since April 1998. See http://www.arrl.org/news/stories/2004/11/23/101/?nc=1 * Hudson Division Awards dinner on Saturday, November 13th The 2004 Hudson Division Awards dinner was held on Saturday, November 13, 2004, in Jericho, Long Island. The dinner was hosted by the Long Island Mobile Amateur Radio Club at the Maine Maid Inn in Jericho, NY. This dinner was held to honor the winners of the Hudson Division Awards. They were presented their plaques at the event as over 80 attendees looked on. Each award winner was introduced by the person who nominated them for the award. George "Hank" Cooke, W2LOP, of Morris Plains, NJ, was awarded Grand Old Ham. Mike Lisenco, N2YBB of Brooklyn, NY, was awarded Amateur of the Year. Jerry Sevick, W2FMI, of Basking Ridge, NJ, was chosen as the winner of the Technical Achievement Award. The food was excellent, the camaraderie was great and there were plenty who walked away with door prizes. Van Field W2OQI of Center Moriches, NY, was presented the QST Cover Plaque Award for his article in September 2004 QST. Gerry Agilita of New Rochelle, NY, was presented with the ARRL President's Award for distinguished service to the ARRL and presented by its board of directors. ARRL President Jim Haynie W5JBP was on hand for the event, as were the three section managers, Pete Cecere N2YJZ from ENY, Bill Hudzik W2UDT from NNJ and George Tranos N2GA from NLI. Hudson Division Director Frank Fallon N2FF hosted the event. Mel Granick KS2G served as master of ceremonies. Congratulations to all the award winners! * Ham Radio University 2005 on Sunday, January 9, 2005 The sixth annual Ham Radio University will be held this year at Briarcliffe College, 1055 Stewart Avenue, Bethpage, Long Island, NY 11714. It will be held on Sunday, January 9, 2005, from 8 AM to 4 PM. HRU is a day of education to share ideas, experiences, knowledge and fellowship among Amateur Radio operators. HRU 2005 will feature 25 different forums covering all areas of ham radio, Amateur Radio demonstrations, an area for clubs and organizations, a special event station (W2V) and a VE session. Our keynote speaker will be Riley Hollingsworth of the FCC. Anyone interested in helping with the planning and set up for HRU 2005 is invited. This will be our 6th annual day of education for and about ham radio. Ham Radio University is all about Spreading Ham Radio Knowledge and Know-How. It is billed as "A day of education to share ideas, experiences, knowledge and fellowship among Amateur Radio operators". Submitted by George Tranos N2GA, Chairman, Ham Radio University 2005 * From Tom Carrubba KA2D, Section Emergency Coordinator New York City District - DEC Michael Licenco N2YBB: October was a very busy month. We started the month on the District level participating with SATERN in the Simulated Passenger Aircraft Disaster Drill at LaGuardia Airport. 9 ARES members provided communications support to the Disaster Response team of the Salvation Army and SATERN. The drill, sponsored by the Port Authority, involved hundreds of emergency responders and a simulated airplane crash. Also in October, we participated in numerous public service events. Manhattan ARES participated in the Central Park Biathlon, Queens ARES participated in the Totten Trot and Brooklyn ARES participated in 6 different events: Miles for Midwives, Eileen C. Dugan Memorial Run/Walk, Deborah Hospital Foundation 4 Mile Run, Get to the Point 5K Run/Walk, American Cancer Society - Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, and the Race Against Violence 5K. October also saw the resumption of classes sponsored by the Red Cross. Over three consecutive Sundays, 32 ARES members took the 4 hour required ARC class which prepares them for shelter operations. Adam Fine AB2IZ, EC Kings County Miles for Midwives - 10/02/04 - Prospect Park, Brooklyn Fifteen members of Kings County ARES came out to participate in this event. Participants were greeted with warm fall weather and the beautiful color of the fall foliage in this event in this event that raises scholarship money for Schools of Midwifery. Participants included: AB2IZ, K2RDG, KA2FXR, KB2SUR, KB2VDV, KC2EDR, KC2FKL, KC2HMS, KC2JXM, KC2KGU, KC2KGV, KC2LYT, KC2MHY, N2KEN and W2DEA. Congratulations and a job well done to Ray, W2DEA, on his first stint as an NCS for a Kings County ARES event. Also, congratulations to Rosie, KC2FKL on participating in her first public service event. Eileen C. Dugan Memorial Run/Walk - 10/03/04 - Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn: This was a first time event for Kings County ARES in the streets of Brooklyn. Twelve members participated in this worthwhile event, which raises money for the Circle of Hope Cancer Foundation. Participants included: AB2IZ, K2RDG, KB2VDV, KC2BGT, KC2EDR, KC2HMS, KC2JXM, KC2MGY, N2ECR, N2ULX, W2/8R1B and WA2JNF. Deborah Hospital Foundation 4 Mile Run - 10/09/04 - Bay Ridge, Brooklyn: This was the second year that Kings County ARES participated in this event in the hills of Bay Ridge. This run, which benefits the Children of the World program, was staffed by fourteen Kings County ARES members, including: AB2IZ, KB2SUR, KC2EDR, KC2FKL, KC2HMS, KC2JXM, KC2KGU, KC2KGV, KC2LYT, KC2MHY, KC2NGU, N2ECR, N2RGA and W2DEA. After this event, Kings County ARES received a plaque form Mickey Alvino and the Deborah Hospital Foundation as a sign of appreciation for the communications service that we provided. Congratulations to Ralph, KC2NGU, on participating in his first public service event. Get to the Point 5K Run/Walk - 10/10/04 - Greenpoint, Brooklyn: Once again, Kings County ARES members took to the streets of Brooklyn to assist with yet another first time event. This event, which benefits the St. Stan's Athletic League, had six members participate, including: KC2KGU, KC2KGV, KC2LYT, W2/8R1B, W2DEA and WA2JNF. Special thanks to Stu, WA2JNF, for picking up this event and running it so well. American Cancer Society - Making Strides Against Breast Cancer - 10/17/04: This event, which took place in the hills of Prospect Park, was one of many events such as this held nationwide. This is the second year that Kings County ARES has participated in this event and a good time was had by all. A job well done to: KC2BGT, KC2JXM, KC2MBV, KC2NGU, KC2NJC, KD2AU, N2ECR and N2RGA. Special thanks to Tony, KC2JXM and Mitch, N2RGA for making the event run so well. Congratulations to Mark, KC2NJC, for participating in his first public service event. Race Against Violence 5K - 10/24/04 - Bay Ridge, Brooklyn: With the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge as a backdrop, Kings County ARES participated in this event for a second year. This race raises money for women and children in abusive relationships and ten members participated, including: KC2EDR, KC2KGU, KC2KGV, KC2MBV, KC2MHY, KC2NGU, KG4FXJ, N2ECR, N2ULX and W2DEA, Thanks to Joe, N2ECR, for running this successful event. Kings County ARES meeting - 10/20/04: Topics: Showing plaque group received from Deborah Hospital Foundation; Critiques of the past nine Kings County ARES events; Discussion on the American Red Cross training course; Following through on commitments; Operators for Race Against Violence; Proper Net Operations and check in procedures. In attendance: AB2IZ, K2RDG, KA2FXR, KA2KDQ, KB2SUR, KB2VDV, KC2CBL, KC2EDR, KC2HMS, KC2JXM, KC2KGV, KC2LYT, KC2MGY, KC2MHY, KC2NGU, KC2NJC, KD2AU, N2ECR, N2RGA, W2/8R1B, W2DEA, and WA2JNF. Kings County ARES has a weekly net, every Sunday at 8PM. We meet on the W2CMA repeater (446.675/-5MHz/114.8) in order to discuss issues of relevance to the ARES community at large and Kings County ARES specifically. Thanks to Mitch (N2RGA) for all the hard work he puts into the site on an almost daily basis. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to, Mark (KC2NJC) Kirshner family on the passing of his uncle. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, November 17th, 2004 at 7:30pm. The location is UCP 121 Lawrence Street, between Ocean Parkway and Seton Place Brooklyn, NY. Nassau County - Mario Maltese WF2T; EC Nassau County (for George Gluck, DEC, WA2WKV). On October 3, Nassau ARES supported the Huntington SET. On the 12th, a presentation took place at the Nassau Red Cross regarding the upcoming SET. 24 members participated. On the 24th, several operators provided communications for the American Diabetes Walk. On the 26th, a digital communications meeting took place at the chapter to prepare new digital equipment and software intended for use during the SET. The American Red Cross activated ARES to provide communications during their operations on the 24th in Cedarhurst for an overturned gas truck, and again on the 27th for an evacuated apartment building in Farmingdale that resulted in over 150 shelter evacuees. Nassau County held its annual SET on the 30th, deploying packet operations between the ARC and EMO, portable packet in the ARC ERV as a data concentrator for welfare traffic, a generator team, as well as tactical voice at the 1st, and 6th Fire Battalion EOC's and the ARC. A phone patch was made whereby the ARC Director of Emergency Services directly addressed the all the operators on the air via the landline. There are unsolved issue as to how (reply to) messages are correctly routed. As more stations participate we will have a better overview. Annual renewals are in progress. Check it out at http://www.qrpis.org/~k3ng/bpl.html * SKYWARN Recognition Day is Saturday, December 4 The sixth annual SKYWARN Recognition Day (SRD) special event will take place Saturday, December 4, 2004. SKYWARN Recognition Day, co-sponsored by the American Radio Relay League and the National Weather Service, pays tribute to Amateur Radio operators for the vital public service they perform. During the 24-hour event, Amateur Radio operators visit their local National Weather Service (NWS) office and work as a team to contact other hams across the world. "Ham radio operators are a tremendous resource for the National Weather Service", says Scott Mentzer (N0QE), organizer of the event and Meteorologist-In-Charge at the NWS office in Goodland, Kansas. "The dedication these amateurs have shown is inspirational, and their assistance during the year is invaluable". SKYWARN Recognition Day will be held from 0000 UTC to 2400 UTC on December 4th. Last year, participants logged nearly 19,000 QSOs during the 24 hour event. RF input/output 144.970. Internet (Telnet) is DXC.K2LS.COM, either standard port 23, or port 7300. The K2LS node is filtered to pass only spots from zones 1 thru 8, but, I can allow any combination of spots/bands to be passed at the users request. Some users connect simultaneously with a different ssid, i.e. KA2D & KA2D-3, enabling them to see both filtered and unfiltered information. The node also filters all talk/chat from outside zones 1 thru 8.
