HAPPENINGS

* From George Tranos N2GA, Section Manager
I sit here on Saturday, December 2, writing my final ehappenings
newsletter as Section Manager!  Wow, it's hard to believe that
9 whole years have passed since I first became NLI Section Manager
in April 1998!  So much has happened in that time and I am thankful
for all of the support, encouragement and good old hard work
provided by so many wonderful people.

First, let me say thank you to each of you for your efforts on behalf
of ham radio.  Each of us represents ham radio when we press the
push-to-talk button, hit the morse code key or transmit a digital signal.
Thank you for setting a good example every time you're on the air!
If you are reading this, you see the wisdom of belonging to our national
organization - the ARRL - and are smart enough to know that it is in
numbers that we remain strong.  Regardless of our differences, we have
to talk in one voice to the FCC and US government so that Amateur
Radio will be around long after we are all gone.

It seems appropriate now to recognize some special people for their efforts
over the years.  First, a big thanks goes to the NLI staff without whom
our field organization would not function.  To some of you, their
names and calls are familiar but I want to mention them here and
commend them for their contributions.  My assistant section managers
Tom Carrubba KA2D, Len Battista W2FX, John Blowsky KB2SCS
and Norm Wesler K2YEW, have been a constant guiding force for me.
Affiliated Club Coordinator Phil Lewis N2MUN, Section Emergency
Coordinator Tom Carrubba KA2D, Section Traffic Manager Jim Minor
W2DSX, Public Information Coordinator Diane Ortiz K2DO, and
Technical Coordinator Rich Rosner N2STU, have all contributed their
time, advice and efforts.  Thank you to all of you!

Past appointees have also contributed much.  While they are no longer
in their previous positions, their efforts during their tenure made a
difference.  They include past TC Sid Wolin K2LJH, ASM Rob Todaro
N1XL, OOC Dan Reisman NY2L, STM Claire Heil WA2VZK,
STM Charlie Ferrando WA2YOW, PIC Roberta Keis N2RBU,
TC Mike Kozma WY2U, SEC Mario Maltese WF2T, BM Mike
Christoper W2IW, ACC Steve Fook K2EJ, ASM Addison Levi KD2YA.

Amateur Radio clubs and their members are the heart and soul of
ham radio.  Thank you to the many clubs who welcomed me over the
years and continue to do great work, elmer newcomers into the hobby
and spread the word on the good ham radio does.  Congratulations and
thanks to those of you who have served as officers, directors, committee
chairpersons, net controls or in other leadership positions.

Also, to members of the ARRL Field Organization, including ARES members,
NTS traffic handlers, public information officers, official observers, government
liaisons and technical specialists.  Your efforts drive the field organization
and without you, it would not function!

As of January 1, 2007, Tom Carrubba KA2D will be the new
Section Manager for NY City and Long Island.  Tom is already
working hard during the transition period to prepare for his new
job.  He is well suited to the task and will do a great job!  Tom will
be running an ARRL forum at Ham Radio University 2007 - please
come down to meet him and the rest of the NLI section staff.
Taking over as Section Emergency Coordinator will be Mike Lisenco
N2YBB.  Mike has helped reinvigorate NY City ARES and will
bring his energy and enthusiasm to the section level as SEC.

Don't forget that the NLI Section Convention is coming up in January!
Ham Radio University 2007 will be held on Sunday, January 7, 2007,
at Briarcliffe College in Bethpage.   Neil Heft KC2KY, the new HRU
2007 chairman, is planning some interesting new things this year.
The preliminary HRU schedule is out and up on the web.  Take a look
at http://www.hamradiouniversity.org/HRU2007.ForumSched.htm
The HRU committee continues to welcome input from hams throughout
New York City and Long Island.  The next planning meeting will be
held on Monday, December 11 at Briarcliffe College Cafeteria in Bethpage
starting at 7:30 pm.  All are welcome to attend.  For more information, see
the HRU website at http://www.HamRadioUniversity.org or contact HRU
chairman Neil Heft KC2KY at kc2ky@arrl.net

Finally, I'd like to extend my best wishes to you and your family for a
wonderful holiday season!  I may be stepping down as section manager but
I will still be around and I look forward to seeing and talking to you soon!

73, George

*** Newsflash - My earlier report of the demise of NYS/M is premature, and thanks to Nick
N2QZ and Bruce KA2GJV for their efforts in keeping this net going.  Now, as many of you are
aware sweeping changes are coming to HF NTS traffic handling so the information regarding HF
CW NTS Nets are subject to change for the next few months while everyone adapts to the new
rule changes.  I will post what I have in these reports, but for the latest information contact me
w2dsx@arrl.net.  This may be an "interesting" time as things shoehorn into the lower 100 kHz of
80 meters, but please be patient as things will be worked out ***

Digital Activity for October 2006:

W2DSX-4 VHF   REC/8 SENT/5  HF-Pactor  REC/3 SENT/3

All stations are encouraged to send in any digital NTS/EMCOM activity, including those that use
New soundcard modes and the various forms of packet being used now...

********************************************************************

As you are all aware of the New Year will bring some changes to the
Section Leadership - I wish to thank George N2GA for his many years of
serving as NLI's SM and for his support of NTS within the section.  I also
wish to welcome Tom KA2D as our new NLI Section Manager and I look
forward to working with Tom in sustaining NTS within NLI.  Tom has
been very helpful in the past as SEC with NTS and has accounted for some
of the packet traffic we have, especially around SET time.  I hope everyone
had a safe and successful SET last month.  It was a pleasure for me to
participate in Nassau's exercise and I appreciate the effort that many people
did behind the scenes to prepare it, such as Mario WF2T, Lorrie KC2CHA,
Jim W2KFV and everyone else who made it happen.  Please check out your
local RACES and ARES groups, they will love to have you no matter what
experience you have!  Anyone who wants to do Section-wide NTS activity
for next year's SET, or for any training exercise whatsoever, please feel free
to contact me w2dsx@arrl.net and I'll be glad to set something up.  I know
that there are other busy ARES/RACES programs throughout the section,
such as NYC District, Town of Babylon, TOBARES, among others.
Please consider submitting SAR/PSHR reports for first time experiences
with generating formal NTS messages, I'll be glad to meet on the air,
landline, packet, etc. to assist!

End of report, respectfully submitted by

communication and public service has greatly increased. More
than ever, hams are volunteering to help meet the
communication needs of our nation, states and communities.
The ARES E-Letter is a response to this expanding awareness.
Anyone with an interest in emergency communication or public
service activities can sign up online to receive The ARES
E-Letter. Each issue will contain a wealth of after-action
reports, editorials, technical tips, news and
views--information you'd otherwise have to wait for in QST.
Timeliness, utility and inspiration are the goals of this
informative publication that's devoted entirely to Amateur
Radio emergency communication and public service. Editing
the first issue is former long-time ARRL Headquarters staff
member Rick Palm, K1CE, who oversaw activities involving
ARRL Section Managers, the ARRL Field Organization and the
Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES). We invite
subscribers to share a copy with club newsletter editors or
with friends who may not be ARRL members but still might be
interested in receiving it. Those receiving the premier
edition also may opt out of getting further copies if they
wish. [from ARRL 08/11/05]

- K2LS DX-Packetcluster node available for DX spots
The K2LS DX-Packetcluster node, located in Merrick, NY,
is available on the Internet (Telnet) is  DXC.K2LS.COM, either
standard port 23, or port 7300. The K2LS node is filtered to pass
only spots from zones 1 thru 8, but, I can allow any combination
of spots/bands to be passed at the users request.  Some users connect
simultaneously with a different ssid,   i.e.  KA2D & KA2D-3, enabling
them to see both filtered and unfiltered information. The node also
filters all talk/chat from outside zones 1 thru 8.  For more information,
contact Larry Strasser K2LS at k2ls@optonline.net

communications site.  Anyone interested in learning more about the
activity of radio direction finding and radio "fox hunting" is invited
to join the group. Of course the real fun is joining the group on an
upcoming hunt.  There is always room for more so grab your HT
