HAPPENINGS
* Ham Radio University 2005 a BIG success!
The sixth annual Ham Radio University was held this year at
Briarcliffe College, 1055 Stewart Avenue, Bethpage, Long Island,
NY 11714 on Sunday, January 9th. A record turnout of over 450
attendees came through the door. HRU is a day of education to
share ideas, experiences, knowledge and fellowship among
Amateur Radio operators. HRU 2005 featured 25 different forums
covering all areas of ham radio, Amateur Radio demonstrations,
an area for clubs and organizations, a special event station (W2V)
and a VE session.

Some of the forum topics included emergency communications,
grounding and lightning protection, contesting and station ergonomics,
low power operating, Echolink, DX'ing from Albania, VHF propagation,
Urban Ham Radio, radio go kits and logging programs.

The HRU keynote speaker was Riley Hollingsworth K4ZDH,
the Special Counsel for Amateur Radio Enforcement for the FCC.
While focusing on enforcement issues, Riley also told the crowd of
their obligation to "sell" Amateur Radio and to support their national
organization, ARRL, in the efforts that they are doing on behalf of
all hams. "Today all groups need a national organization
[to protect their interest]." Riley said, "There's even a national
organization for kite flyers." He reminded the audience that in the
past Amateur Radio had powerful colleagues like Senator Barry
Goldwater, K7UGA (SK) and others that were hams and they could
help look after our interest. Riley emphasized that in today's world of
powerful lobbies and special interest groups, the individual's letter
doesn't carry much weight so we need to support our national
organization for Amateur Radio, ARRL.

Riley shared his vision for ham radio to last "a thousand years" and
made it a point to remind all hams of their obligation to invite someone
to join the world of Amateur Radio. He told the audience "If you are
not the person to teach a class or work one on one then try something new.
Try getting on PSK-31 or a mode that you don't normally operate." Riley
was making a point for all hams to rejuvenate their enthusiasm for the
hobby and this enthusiasm will become contagious. He suggested that
we introduce youngsters to Amateur Radio and plant the seed for the
future. However, if we are to get new hams into the hobby right now
we should focus on the part of the population that has the time and
resources to devote to a hobby.

And that is the whole point of Ham Radio University - to spread
Ham Radio knowledge and know-how. Thanks are extended to all
the volunteers, forum moderators, committee staff, VE team, clubs
and organizations for all their efforts that made HRU 2005 a success.
A HRU 2005 committee wrap-up meeting will be held on Tuesday,
February 8th at 7 PM at Briarcliffe College cafeteria. For more
information about HRU, see the HRU 2005 website at
http://www.hudson.arrl.org/nli/hru2005.htm or e-mail HRU
Chairman George Tranos N2GA at n2ga@arrl.net

* From Tom Carrubba KA2D, Section Emergency Coordinator

New York City District - DEC Michael Lisenco N2YBB:
Happy holidays to all. December saw New York City District
ARES participating in the annual Operation Santa Claus event
that is sponsored by the Community mayors of New York at JFK
Airport. Over 5,000 handicapped children attended and were
treated to a party, gifts and a visit by Santa himself who
taxied into the hangar where the party was held on his jet.
We also participated in the ARRL Operation White Dove toy
drive. Locally coordinated by Joe Prego, N2ECR, NYC
District ARES PIO, nearly 100 pounds of new toys were
collected throughout the City and shipped to the United Way
in Florida free of charge by FedEx.

John Healy, KA2ABV, EC New York County
Manhattan ARES Members contributed a huge container of toys
sent to brighten the holidays for those children in Florida
whose families lost everything they had during the recent
hurricane season. Our thanks to Federal Express for their
generous support in shipping the toys in time for Christmas,
the United Way White Dove Project for coordinating the
effort down in Florida, and to W3BW, W2RAG, and KA2ABV for
their contributions.
We are pleased to announce that Manhattan ARES and the
Broadcast Employees Amateur Radio Society, W2ABC, have
re-established their long standing working relationship. The
trustees of the BEARS repeater system have generously
permitted Manhattan ARES to designate their two meter
repeater (147.27 +600Khz, PL 141.3) as the main Manhattan
Tactical Frequency as well as an NYC-ARES Citywide
Frequency. We are holding our weekly Manhattan ARES Net on
the BEARS repeater each Tuesday evening beginning at 7:30
PM. All are invited to check in. During the New Year,
Manhattan ARES will be assisting BEARS with its VE sessions
at the ABC corporate campus on Manhattan's upper West Side.
Further details will be posted on both the BEARS website
http://www.w2abc.org/, the NYC-ARES website
http://www.aresnyc.org/, and in QST.

maintain technical and operating skills.  Picnics, field trips and
collaboration with local clubs (some QRP) help to maintain
continuity and frequency of operating opportunities.
KCRC actively supports and engages in ARES and RACES
events as well as local public service events (i.e. NYC Marathon)
which are not directly supported by ARES. Contact KCRC
via its secretary at kb2psm@arrl.net or via its website at
